People usually put a push button switch in when they have trouble with the ignition switch. Why anyone would go to the trouble of wiring that instead of just replacing the switch is beyond me.
I would start with a new ignition switch, just the electrical part, you dodn't need the cylinder and keys.

+1 by control module you mean the one in the distributor, correct? Make sure all your wires are hooked into the distributor. Those Gm distributors were awesome.. Just a power feed and its done, all self contained.. So if all the parts in the distributor are good, then you have a power feed problem. and if you have a good power feed. Then the problem may not be with the ignition.

Also make sure the rotor is spining when you crank the motor over.

Hmm might be the fact that it is somewhat costly to repair if the car was stolen thus installment of a push was the best option.
Well anyhow on my 1992 Camaro RS 25th Ann I guess it's costly I also believe it's a real easy car to steal so I'd stay with a push if you already have it.
About the problem first thing to check like you said would be the starter and switch, from what I have heard normally thats not the case but wouldn't be suprised if it was indeed the problem.
If you push start the car does it make a click sound and just not start or does it simply do nothing? Normally a click sound would suggest the starter's solidnoid being bad.
Also like they said distributor etc... but your already onto that.
Also it's a fairly old car, I'd check the fuel pump and carb normally the car would atleast try to crank even if the 2 were bad but i'v seen cases where it does not.
Well hope this helps reply if you find out what it is, kinda interested in seeing the outcome.
Good luck!
P.S.
Make sure to check your wiring of the new distributor one wire could be the problem.
