I have a VW Passat that I need to install a headunit into.
The factory harness doesn't carry illumination and 12v switched; having issues finding these sources.
Thinking of just paying to get it done.
Any thoughts? :(

illumination isn't a problem and the 12v should be easy to find....? Should be yellow or red and is sometimes bigger than the other wires.

Low in the passenger side kick panel for switched power. Should be a few thicker wires in a bundle down there. I forget what color it is, just meter the thicker wires down there, should be the thickness of ignition harness wiring. Or the fuse panel on the drivers side, accessable when you open the door, should have a switched power in there if I remember correctly. You could use a fuse tap and catch it there.
Illumination...ill have to let someone else chime in. Its been a while, and on regular radio installs, a lot of times I don't even use illumination.
PS, This is all assuming its the 02-05 body style. I havent torn apart one of the brand new ones at all yet and know nothing about them.

illumination switched ACC should come from the fuse box. Be sure to use inline fuse taps on the protected side of the circuit(the protected side will show ground when the fuse it removed)
They look like below except you need the mini version. You could also use T-taps from the ignition column and the headlight switch.

Good news is I think I found switched 12v in fuse 27, and will use an add-a-circuit.
Bad news is a I still can't find illumination.
I'm new with a multimeter - how do I meter the wires in the harness of the headlight switch when it has to be plugged into the switch itself to activate the signal, etc? Pierce jacket?

the year would be helpful in getting you the right color wire to tap.

illumination isn't necessary.
I've never used it, nor do I like it.
But to each their own...

It's a 2006 (mentioned in my garage, ;) ).. I'm using an Eclipse AVN5500, and at night, the bright white screen KILLS my ability to see the road so illumination is a MUST so that at night the navi turns black.
I found the wire, and its all installed.

I just don't think an install is complete unless the stereo dims when its supposed to.

Agreed. Why shortchange an install?
