w0rd,

If I were you I would ask around and get some co-drivers, I run my sentra on Road racing suspension without issue however I'm sure there are plenty of autocrossers that are more cautious then myself, that still havce dirty dreams.

I've been told that a clay surface can really rip up paint on a car. Any information on the surface and the damage one might be prepared to face or dispelling thoughts?

Asking because I had thought about running in future events.

treekiller
09-22-2007, 03:08 PM
I've never had a problem.. I would be more concerned about gravel then clay, clay is much like pavement (unless water is present) it does not get kicked up. if you were driving the oval at speed, PERHAPS it might get kicked up but for what we are doing I would not worry. and hey if your afraid you can allways drive W0rd's rental car :-0

I've written myself about 5 notes to make sure that the timing equipment is charged up. I hope there's going to be power for the laptop?

treekiller
09-25-2007, 05:48 PM
There is power, and Shade, and bathrooms, and a timing tower. and plenty of parking. it's the best rallycross facility I've found in florida. with all the amentities we get included. Make sure you bring a extension cord just in case you need the computer closer to the timing lights then the outlets allow. hopefully bob SCCA bob will bring all his equipment as backup because we do not know how dusty it will be and if that will keep the light triggers from working...

even if it does we can set up the start to auto trigger and have someone press the end button as they cross the finish

i don't think it will get too dusty honestly, we really don't get shit flung up on us until the really fast cars get running, and its usually later in the evening, but you have to remember, thats 20-30 cars each heat, we'll probably rarely even run the same lines

Attended the CFR district meeting tongiht and talked with a couple of guys who raced on this track before and gave me a couple of tips I thought I would pass along:

Before the race clean the car, wax it really good, then spray WD40 or Pam everywhere you can to help keep the clay/dust/dirt from sticking.

After the race hit up the local car wash to spray the car down and remember to get up under the car and the suspension.

They used to buy foam, like those to make couches, cut out a wedge and stuff it up under the wheel well guard to help keep excess dirt out. They also suggested to *not* use the spray foam because well it doesn't come off.

They said with only one to two cars out on course at a time, like a regular autox, one shouldn't see a lot of dirt flying up at them.

With our speeds we shouldn't be ripping up the track that much to cause any difficulties.

One guy did mention that he wasn't sure about the status of the infield portion.

They said its a blast to run out there and to have fun :)

Pending weather and whats up I may try to make it back Sunday to spectate so that I can run in the future.

It's a rally, if you wanted a navagator it's okay, windows MUST be up and everyone MUST be belted and helmeted. since it's scored cumulitivly unlike autocross there can be parade laps around the course. getting extra views at the track is not such a big deal, as usually it's the slower car that does not spin that wins their class. I will be there ALL day for instruction for first time rallycrossers, I am not competing for class position so come ride with me and I'll show you the line (at least the FWD line) hunt me down and hop in clockwork orange. I'm changing suspension today.

Jeff, I'll try and be there by 8:00 to get the software up and running (and power run, etc) to do registration... 8:30 (the listed registration start time) at the latest.

Looks like a fun event but I can see my car bottoming out horribly and not enjoying itself through the dirt :(

I'll have to check it out sometime though... interesting little contest.

Bitchin' Camaro, Bitchin' Camaro, I'm gonna buy me a Bitchin' Camaro!
Thanks for the flash back Muddy.

If I had more than 2 1/4 inches of clearance on the Fiero, I'd have come out. Maybe I should have run the F-150. Not a bad idea.

As for bottoming out, the course was very forgiving, unlike many rallycross courses East bay has a nice solid Clay base which suprisingly gets grippier as the day goes on. and does not rut, even with 8 runs each and 16 Formula SAE drivers the course was just as smooth (actually smoother) as when we started. which was no worse then many roads I've driven in tampa. almost everything was stock that ran, I don't think anyone complained or had bottoming out issues.

As a kid, in the 80's IN PHILADELPHIA Yea I know the Milkmen.

Yeah but my cars ride height on these damn springs give it a lot to be desired.

I really need to get some coils...

Well, since I got the results ready, and I can, I'll just post them here! Jeff - I also emailed them to your Yahoo account.

Class results and overall rankings. Enjoy, everybody.

Note that these do not include the SAE Baja guys (USF and UF), I'm trying to figure out how I can get your times out in their entirety as there were about 18 runs for the "cart" from UF and a good number for the others too. Please bear with me (if anybody of you are reading here).

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to put my thoughts in a separate post from the results for linking purposes.

The little timing booth we had set up was very nice. Nice breeze all day. I do apologize for the timing issues we had. After discussing it with Loren, it was probably an alignment issue with the beams. It is possible that a dead-killer alignment would have helped with the dust, but really there isn't much you can do with that style of lights. The old fashioned "run over" type would have probably worked better.

The starting line was killer... probably my favorite part of the whole course. There was a sort of crown as the entry gate transitioned to the banked corner. I'd do a nice launch and as soon as the front tires went over the lip, the backs got a huge power boost, then the fronts got more power as the backs went over. It felt like a huge power launch as I crossed that crowned section into the course.

Of course, I had a few nice drifts too , and the big curve on the back section was a little hairy as I could kick the back end out nice at about 60mph setting up for the corner to the infield.

as for timing. a little dust is no suprise. rallycross is harder to time it's a matter of fact but you did an AWESOME job! remember this was our FIRST event EVER! and we had 8 runs and out by 4:00 and results with little or no wait.

The course, what can I say was awesome, switching from the track, to the slicker infield and back , and back. was challenging. with more experence I think we can have some REAL fun with the banking.

only one car spun on the banked turn and as expected spun "down" into the skirt of the track, next event we can use more of the track forcing the cars up the banking with gates. I was Flat in 2nd around that turn, if I was a REAL man I could have short shifted 3rd and carried a bit more speed.

I LOVE EBRP for rallycross, They want us back too. once news of these events gets out I bet the numbers are going to blow up.

A friend of mine was almost crushed by the mosh pit while photographing the Milkmen at USF. She was taking photos and not paying attention to the motion of the pit. I glanced over just as she was about to be crushed and saw a Huge red headed girl pull her out at the last second as the pit collapsed on her spot. Thank goodness for huge red headed girls.

The more I think about it, bringing the F-150 to Eastbay might be a hoot.
