its between 400-600 depending on what color you wanna paint it... obviously colors that would show scratches and imperfections should be 600 and as for dry or wet sanding... its up to you... its kinda cleaner to just dry but i like wet

ya thats for dupont mainly but with PPG you usually go 600-800 and you can use 600 for yellow if you are sanding by hand use water if by DA u can do it dry

Actually you only need 320 to sand primer. If you read through the documentation from the major paint companies they all will tell you that 320 is all the finer a sandpaper you need to be able to paint over.
Every car that goes through our shop is finished in 320 before it goes into the paint booth and we have NO problems with scratches, UNLESS, the primer is not given sufficient time to "suck back."
That is where the primer actually shrinks a little bit. If you sand the primer before it shrinks it will look straight for a few days, maybe a few weeks and then you'll be able to see where the body work was done.
But realistically 320 is fine!

320 is the right grit to sand it before paint, you have to have the area a little rough so the paint is able to stick..
personally i use 400 for a little smoother surface, but 320 is perfectly fine
oh yea, i suggest you wet sand it before layin base..
