Someone tell me why a cf hood bumps you up in class (ex. DSP to SM)?? I was thinking about gettin a cf hood until I read the SCCA rule book. Is it just cuz of the weight reduction?? Even an oem cf hood bumps you up

I don't know anything about SP. But I heard it bumps you out of STS because of a safety type thing. Something about CF hoods not being crash tested. Similar to how you can't replace an airbag steering wheel in STS either. When I say "safety" I don't mean that's it's unsafe, just that it doesn't fit in the "spirit of the rules".

I think SP was originally meant to be more of a street legal class hence the name "street prepared", and it slowly turned into the bastard it is today. I believe they call this phenomenon "rules creep".

damn these rules  I looked in the "SP" section of the 2006 Solo rule book, and basically I can not replace the hood.

it also lowers your center of gravity and brings your 50/50 closer to perfect, especially for FF :)

Solution 1: Take your stock hood and grind the underside of it until it is half the OEM thickness.

Solution 2: Stop bothering.

Neh! Not worth it, just wanted one for the hell of it  Now with FAST I could have one and it doesn't matter.

You think that's bad? I put a larger hood scoop on my car and it bumps me to Street Mod. Well, not like I'm not supposed to be in SM anyways, but that was back when I still had a high-flow cat on my car.

Do you actively compete with the car? Or do you just do it for fun?

My approach is to build a car the way I like and to hell with the rules. If I end up in some tube frame 600hp class because I have a triangulated strut tower bar so be it because all I want to do is have some fun and improve my skill. If I wanted to be competitive in any form of motorsport I'd purpose build a car for it. But then again I've only done one event so my opinion doesn't count for much.

Actually, it does:

"Modified cars are production-based cars with any of the following modifications:

Any internal engine modification (crank, cams, rods, pistons)
Any external engine modification that alters fuel delivery (alternate carb, altered fuel injection, fuel-air ratio adjusters)
Any non-factory engine replacement
Welded chassis reinforcement, including welded roll bars/cages
Alternate or altered springs
Altered suspension geometry (relocated pickup points, alternate suspension parts to increase factory alignment adjustment range such as camber kits, camber plates, or slotted strut mounts)
Alternate main body panels (doors, hood, trunk lid, fenders, roof panel, windows)
Removal of factory interior parts (seats, interior panels)"
A CF hood (or other lightweight body panels) is usually a pretty significant weight reduction, and a group of lightweight panels done right can shift the CG location by a considerable margin.

Yes I do compete with my car Jordan.Y and do it for fun.

Thanks for the info pullg

I'll stick with the stock hood for now until I get my s/c :) Sometime in the future

I'm about the same, I am in the class with evo's on slicks and I WILL get my butt kicked by them, but I mod my car the way I want it and then whatever class I fit into, I run. I'm just out to beat my own times anyway.

Darryl really competes though so it will be different for him.
