How should I set the controls on my Amp?

I have a Kicker 350.4 for my hi's and mid's (2 pair of cpomponents).

Where is a good starting point with the controls for:

Cross Over Freq
Gain
Bass Boost

I currently have the Crossover Freq turned ~25%, Gain at ~75% and the Bass Boost at ~25% for both sets (Amp1 & Amp2).

My head unit does not allow me to control the sub separately, thus I use a Bass Control knob.

Also.... what does the switchable "OFF / HI / LO" crossover do?
What are the best practices for configuration?

your going to want the switch on the "hi" side, thats just adjusting what frequency and since your running your highs, obv you will want it on the high side. the other 3 adjustments I really just play by ear. the "gain" is going to adjust how loud it is, usually your supposed to match it to how many volts your head unit puts out but most people dont. the other 2 I really just play by ear, put it where it sounds the best for what I listen to.. Kind of expiramental

Im going to guess your head unit probably puts ~2 volts, thats really not much at all and im sure your gain will end up being atleast half way up. I usually set my head unit at a decent volume with amps turned down, adjust the highs untill there as loud as I want, and have the sound quality I want. then i leave that alone and adjust the sub amp to the volume I want, usually it takes a while to get it sounding right, exp with the manual knobs where you have to get in the trunk or under a seat to adjust (usually the differant spots in the car will sound differant)

tim is on the right track - i set headunit to about 3/4 - 7/8 volume, leave bass and trebles flat, the turn gain on amps until just start to breakup and sound bad, do the same for rear channel, then match the bass amp to your taste.
