Hi, I just got a 97 civic, and I want to lower it, I just want to give it a more sporty look, I'm looking for an 1" to 2" in drop, I am planing to replace the front shocks soon, there pretty worn, so I want to change all the springs at the same time.
Now the advice I need is; are "ebay" lowering springs ok? I dont want coilovers, just springs, and if "ebay" springs are that bad, what brand should I get?
Keep in mind, im on a budget, and im not looking for a crazy racing suspension, just want to lower it a little, please help.

for that application, i still say FOR THE MOST PART, springs are springs
there are excellent springs out there, but you will be fine with what you are talking about for what you want

If your looking to go no more then a 2" drop, You should be fine with any brand/non-brand spring.
Most all springs are made out of the same materials, The Stiffness/uncomfortable ride you don't want shouldn't be a problem because the drop your wanting is subtle.
The lower you go and the tighter the springs are compressed.....the more bounce you'll have.
If I can suggest something before you go buying new "Ebay" springs, Why don't you hold off just a little bit and continuously watch the Honda/Acura for sale forum for some used Neuspeed/Eibach/H&R Sport/Etc. springs.
9 out of 10 times used springs are just as good as New springs...minus the price.
I've owned several sets of used springs and never had a problem.
Let me do a quick search and see is I can come up with something for you.

When you get brand name springs over ebay, at a reduced price,
it is usually a good deal. Unknown brands may not have the quality,
and I am personally skeptical of them.-Bob

A spring is a spring. The shock is what you need to worry about.
But if someone randomly chooses which spring rate is good for your car, the balance might be off and you could also easily bottom out your car. What you can do is find the ideal spring that you're looking for, get the specs of that spring, and then find a cheap "ebay spring" that has similar specs. Just don't rush into a cheap spring and assume it's ideal for your car.

What specs, would I be looking for?

I have skunk 2 springs. The spring rate is:
Front - 447
Rear - 336
Just look for something remotely close to those numbers.

Cool, thank, can you tell me what the higher or lower the numbers mean?
DareDevil

Ok well say 2 springs have different spring rates:
One with 336 g/mm and the other with 447 g/mm.
It means the 1st spring will compress 1 mm if you put a load of 336 grams, while the 2nd one will not. The 2nd one will need a 447 g. load to compress 1mm.
Sooo...you can say that the 2nd spring is harder than the 1st one, or that springs that have a low Spring Rate are soft, while springs that have a high Spring Rate are stiffer.

Be careful to not run into this common misconception - similar spring rates will not mean similar wheel rates for different cars. Depending on the geometry, the wheel rate will usually be about 20-60% less than the spring rate for each corner on a passenger vehicle. So, for instance, on your EG you may have 447 g/mm springs in the front, but because of your geometry, your wheel rate is 350 g/mm. But on edmel89's CRX, he may use the same springs and get wheel rates of 230 g/mm. Plus the weight of your car also affects how the car handles. Obviously, a tiny coupe is going to need lighter springs than a 5000 lbs truck, and by the same token a CRX will ideally need relatively lighter springs than a Civic. What you really should be comparing are wheel rate natural frequencies. The natural frequency takes into account the wheel rate and the corner weight of the car. So, in this situation, DareDevil could say that 2.0 Hz natural frequency works well for the front suspension on his Civic, and edmel89 would be able to find what wheel rate (and then the spring rate) to make his car handle similarly. However, a lot more goes into the handling of a car than the natural frequencies, but it's a start. Maybe DareDevil already knows that the natural frequencies would be similar, and if that's the case I apoligize for the criticism.
For those who want to learn more about natural frequencies and other suspension characteristics, check out Automobile Ride, Handling, and Suspension Design (http://www.rqriley.com/suspensn.htm)
If you don't care to do all the figures, you should probably find someone with the same type of car and see what springs they run.

ben the skunk2 in the front at 2.5 drop with 2 coils cut off
and neuspeed race in the rear at 2.5 drop also with 2 coils cut off = WAY TOO LOW :-o so raise with a set of dropzone springs at 2.5 drop nice and smooth

Hi,
Cutting stock spring is not a good idea. Stock springs are only made to sell a car, not as a performance parts. Good shock are also a must. Normally in a brand new car you don't need to change your shocks or struts but on a used car you may want to change for KYB or Tokico. Performance springs (TEIN, SKUNK2, NEUSPEED, H & R) are made with a lot better quality and durability than stock. Now depending on the drop that you want, you have to choose the right springs. Cutting your stock springs can screw up your suspension.

You get what you pay for...if you get to have a sound system or anything that your car might carry more weight than it supposed to for a long period of time;can shrink your rear shocks.

heh, worked great for me. i had bomz racing (eghey) coilovers on tokico blues and eghey front/rear/lower strut bars. now when i first got them (coilovers)...i had stock shocks.....and, i blew them in 4 months  . i agree as far as the spring rates are concerned. shocks also play a factor, too.
i just bought tom motor sport springs for about $70 with some dropzone struts ... and to be honest its rides better then stock

why would you cheap out on no-name china boop suspension? thats just retarded.
why would you cheap out on no-name china boop suspension? thats just retarded.
i been through cheap and expesinsive items in everything whether its car parts or even food... but if you look at the material its made from just like ingredients in food and you know what to look for you can have nice things for half the price as the expensive stuff.
Doing research is my strongest point before making a purchase nowadays ;)
