so here goes. i wanted to get this up now cuz when we get the shortblock in, things are going to happen pretty quickly and doing this now will give me a headstart. it may still be a week or two before the shortblock comes in.

the background:

i have the original 302 shortblock with heads, cam, intake. the block has 143,000 miles on it. i put a 62mm turbo on it. then i converted from efi to blow thru carb.

i dyno'd the car at 577 rwhp and then took her to the track and ran a 10.74 @ 125. shortly after that, the motor started oil fouling one of the plugs on the driver's side. i had to replace the plug every other day just to keep the car running decent. i was afraid i had cracked my block.

we took the motor out and took it apart to find the problem. turns out it was just a ring. that's good, but it kinda sucks too. i know i have already pushed this block beyond its capabilities. re-ringing the block and putting it back in was not an option.

the goal:

get a new block and associated parts and build the motor back up. the motor will be a 363ci 9.2:1 dart block. while i am at it, i am going to get rid of my existing 62mm turbo and the turbo kit it came as part of and fabricate my own turbo kit using a new, bigger turbo. i will be re-using my tfs heads and weiand intake.

I believe the journals are turned which allows a longer rod. Perhaps they use a chevy rod , which has a smaller journal diameter as Ive seen done.

uhm... jegs, i guess. lol

those are all the pipe bends (listed in my parts lists in the first post) that we purchased from jegs. this is not a kit. it's just a pile of pipes that we are building our own DIY kit with.

making progress with the engine bay welding. the towers are mostly welded up, the front panels are welded in. got the firewall still to do and thinking about doing the front strip as well. may do the holes near the top of the fenders when we take the fenders off for painting... thats still a little ways away.

after fabrication is done this coming week we are sending the headers and all the piping off to be thermo coated. no telling how long that might take. we estimate another 2 to 3 weeks before she gets cranked for the first time.

yes, it is a sportsman.

TRE Performance out in California did the build.

I did the iron eagle and should have gone sportsman. Oil pan to clear the front and rear caps for the IE cost more. Plus on the IE the oil returns from a remote filter to the pass rear side of the block. I would rather had a spin on filter in the stock location.
Anything done to the TFS heads? What style cam are you going to use? Looks like you are spending money in the right places.

yea, we knew we didn't need to go with the iron eagle... a sportsman will do me just fine.

the tfs track heat heads have been port matched and thats about it.

i went with a cam motion custom grind cam (the specs are in the first post in this thread). it should have a little bit of rumpity rump to it, but nothing too wild.

i still want this car to be very streetable. i love driving this car to work and running around with the kids doing the mom's taxi thing with it. if it starts getting difficult to drive it around town, then we've gone too far with it.

Iraq&Roll

I was asking if hyd roller, solid roller, low-lash solid? I spec'd a cam motion low lash solid roller but my builder had to go hyd roller.
I did a 4.125 bore 3.25 stroke 347 with TEA TW heads with the incon twins.
I think you will want more turbo soon. What will the next step be after the MP 70? You got the cubes and the heads.

Stoopid Wendy
08-12-2007, 04:43 PM
sorry, i forgot that part. the cam is a hyd roller.

when we are ready to take the car to the next level we'll prolly will go right to an 88.

a little bit accomplished today...

here is the crossover piping (on the bottom) and the down pipe (over the crossover). john routed the down pipe out through the k member and the control arm. before i could snap a pic of it he took all the piping off and ran it up to the welder. we'll get those pipes back this afternoon and i'll get shots of the welded up pipes.

the big progress report... the hotside is 98% done!!!! we dropped the passenger header and the downpipe off to the welder on wednesday morning and got it back wednesday afternoon. meanwhile, john finished up the drivers header and the crossover pipe and dropped that off for welding. we just got the drivers header and the crossover back tonight. it all bolted back up beautifully!!! lotsa pix coming...

the passenger side header, the down pipe, and part of the crossover all welded up:

http://www.wendyzak.com/gallery/albums/userpics/normal_100_3370.jpg

the drivers side header and the rest of the crossover. the joint for the header and crossover came out perfect. in this picture i don't think you can see it well, but the crossover pipe has a slip fit on one end and the mount for the wastegate on the other end.

the down pipe isn't connected to the exhaust yet, but that's next:

next on the to do list is finishing the down pipe to the exhaust, mounting the blow off, getting the hotside thermo coated, and finally we will order the intercooler. we have decided on an air-to-liquid intercooler. and then we will finish the cold side.

then she'll be ready to crank.

yea!!! the hotside fabrication is done! we're taking the turbine housing and all the piping over to Precision Motorsports (http://pm-fl.com/catalog/) in hudson for their 2000 degree thermo coating. here are some shots of the finished product without the motor.

Looking good, but if you want to keep it a street car,why not a air to air?

because i won't be able to put a full size intercooler on the car that is required for adequate air to air intercooling. i went that route before and i could never use my A/C because the car would overheat. as long as the air wasn't on, the car ran at a decent temp, but shortly after turning it on the car would heat up to 215, 220... i don't know if the intercooler blocked too much air flow or what, but if i can't use my A/C then i won't drive the car and that pisses me off.

cobras have air-to-water... it can't be that bad for a street car... :dunno:

Can you explain the underhood body work to me, I get the inner fender well plates (for more room, and prob thicker for support) but can you explain the welding throughout the rest of the underhood compartment, ie: the fire wall and strut towers, they just look like random spot welds that have be ground down.

^^^ is correct. When your are idling vacum is great. When you in the boost there is no vacum its positive pressure. There is no vacum until the motor winds down (also turbo). The pedal is hard as a rock until this happens. I converted my GN to vacum brakes because of powermaster problems, now looking to convert it to hydraboost like on the Cobras

maybe i am totally missing something.

when you are in boost and your vacuum becomes positive pressure, doesn't the one-way check valve at the brake booster store vacuum for braking? even if you had to suddenly brake during full boost, doesn't the booster still have enough stored vacuum to brake while the motor RPMs back down into vacuum?

otherwise, you wouldn't be able to use your brakes when the motor isn't running, right?

if you converted your GN to vacuum brakes, what did it have on it before?

It is called a Powermaster. Had an electric motor on it that looked like a ford starter with an accumulator and solonoids. GM quit making these and the remans dont last very long.
I tried the one way valve deal, They do store a little vacum, but for driving in traffic I dont care for it too much! Definately give yourself a good saftey cushion. It doesnt like to hold at the lights (track) either, once boost comes up, 6-7lbs starts to push through.
Im not knockin what your doing, just thought I'd share my experince on this with you.

no problem... i just didn't understand. i've been running a boosted application on this car for three years or so (both supercharger and turbo) and i've never experienced a problem with the brakes with a 60 mile daily commute. i thought maybe i was missing something. hehehe

i know i haven't spent much time on the intercooler setup, but we are still designing it and positioning it and figuring out where to mount the different pieces. we decided to make good use of a stock cobra heat exchanger since it fits perfectly behind the front bumper and doesn't look like it will cause any air flow problems.

we decided on the following:

we purchased a 5 gallon fuel cell that will be mounted in the trunk. this will serve as our water reservoir. we got a bosch cobra heat exchanger water pump to suck the water through the system.

we decided to use a stock cobra heat exchanger that will be mounted right behind the front bumper, in front of the condenser. we are purchasing two low profile 5.6 inch fans that will be mounted on the heat exchanger. each fan pulls 295 cfm.

and finally, we purchased a 12x12x4.5 inch air-to-liquid intercooler off of ebay. this will be mounted on the driver side front corner. it will physically be mounted inside the front clip. we have it mounted now (with zip ties! lol) so we can mock up piping and make sure the positioning of everything is perfect. this is the only thing i have pix of right now.

2. mount the reservoir and water pump, then plumb the lines for the water to flow through.

3. mount the oil filter and run the lines for it. john just made the mounting bracket for this today.

here is a longer video. a few different vids sewn together. it's about 8mb in size, 3.5 minutes long.

some details... she started with only 5 degrees of timing! woops! hehehe the headers were glowing red at one point until we got the timing right. the air/fuel seems nice, good oil pressure. i took her out for a drive last night. i'm gonna have to get used to not having power steering again! lol gonna run her easy for a little bit to break in the motor and clutch. since we put the coilovers on, her front wheels are all cockeyed so she is going in for an alignment tomorrow.

i think thats it for now. i'll get some go fast vids up when we jump on her. and, of course, i'll video the dyno. hehehe

a ton of thanks go out to dominic at blue moon automotive for the dyno!

well, the dyno went well. we found out we had two problems.

at WOT she is running well as far as air/fuel... right at about 12 across the graph. could be a hair leaner but 12 is safe so i'm good there. the problem is when you first get on the throttle she goes lean at about 15 and then goes to 14 and hovers there for a second before she drops into the 12 zone. so we've got a little fine tuning yet to do with the carb.

the second problem was the turbo. we set the boost controller to 15 psi. john tested her out on tuesday and saw 15 psi on the gauge. we thought we had her right where we wanted her for the dyno. but... when she got on the rollers, all we saw was 10 psi. so... something somewhere wasn't right. maybe we still have a little bit to learn about the boost controller. hehehe

either way, it was definitely a respectable number and i am happy with it.

first pull was a little weird... she blew the sensor out of the exhaust and lost the a/f reading, then we think she spun the tires cuz half of the hp/tq readings are missing from the graph. lol nuttin but whitespace! so the first pull reading are off on the rpm since the middle of the power range numbers are what was missing, but the readings were...

511.48 hp @ 5800 rpm
694.81 tq @ 3400 rpm

second pull:

578.76 hp @ 4500 rpm
702.79 tq @ 4100 rpm

man i'm leaning toward a glide. looks great... lots of work.

If you don't mind me asking, how much do you have in to the tranny/converter?

Stoopid Wendy
03-12-2008, 10:29 PM
we got a bit of a break on the transmission because we've had this tranny sitting in our garage for the last 7 or 8 years. so we didn't have the cost of purchasing the transmission.

however, we sent it out to paul dorn and had him work it up. he changed the first gear from a 1.82 to a 1.76. he did all the typical things you have to do to a glide to make it work on a ford (input shafts, etc). he put a trans brake in it (not pro tree), he cut the bellhousing and bolted on an SFI housing. that was all about $1200 or $1300 including the gearset, bellhousing, and crank adapter.

we paid about $120 for the flywheel (157 tooth). all the parts we bought were JW. if you go with the 157 flywheel you need to get a small bolt pattern converter.

the converter is a PTC 9.5" set up for the turbo. it's got the anti-ballooning plate and steel sprag. that was another $850.

and we paid about $350 for the PST aluminum driveshaft.

we got the hurst quarterstick II shifter with pistol grip for about $230.

the transmission pan was about $100.

we used the stock trans cross member, slightly modified.

there were other small things like the tranny cooler for $50 or whatever... the rest of it was all nickel and dime stuff.

so all told, it was in the neighborhood of $2900 give or take.

we were able to offset that by selling all of my practically new 5 speed parts (tko600, spec 3+ clutch, fidanza flywheel, lakewood bell, frpp alum driveshaft, etc) so it worked out pretty good for us.

john says that it really wasn't a lot of work to do the conversion itself. the hard part was planning the conversion and picking the pieces.

wendy, whats the reason for narrowing the rearend? is the the wheels or just the big tires?

thanks for any info as i am about to order the same wheels since MT ET Drag wheels arent made with mustang offsets.

Stoopid Wendy
03-26-2008, 02:30 PM
you are right on... with the 15x8 wheels and the 275/60s when she is sitting still, there is about a half inch of clearance with my unrolled fender lip. once she is in motion, that lip tears the tire up.

i don't want to roll my fenders, so we are shortening the rear end to bring the wheels/tires in a little bit so that they tuck a little nicer and we may be able to lower the car back down a tad. we don't need to pull them in an entire inch, but we got the long wheel studs so john is going to use a half inch billet spacer to knock em back out a half inch. so that should give me an inch of clearance from the fender lip. and we'll have room to adjust as necessary. john will prolly have to do use some gentle influence on the inner fender to make room on the inside.

not only do the 60s fill the well, but they are taller and jack her ass all up. i want my low-slung stance back.

EDIT: Not the best pic cuz of the shadow... but i think you get my point. click it to see it bigger.

so i guess this thread is no longer just about my new motor and turbo build... might as well keep other mechanical updates in here as well.

so we get my rear end out and get it ready to send to the chassis shop for the big chop. he was also going to weld a couple of tabs on so that john could attach some braces to the rear end to strengthen it.

we got the rear end back from the chassis shop last night. he went ahead and instead of just putting on some mounting tabs for us he put the bracing on that we were thinking about doing.

he ended up having to cut the drivers side axle tube completely off since it was bent almost a quarter of an inch back. lol he put it on a jig, got it all straight again and welded her back up.

cliffnotes: strange customer service is the worst ever!

john was gonna go ahead and have the axles cut locally but he thought better of it today and decided to call strange back and have them take the axles back and fix the problem they created. its one of those things, you just know if those axles fail for some reason, strange is gonna say its our fault since WE cut them.

so he calls strange this morning and talks to a guy and tells him the whole deal with the original conversation with tracy about the shortened axles and not getting them. the guy starts to argue with john a little bit about how nothing was written on the original order sheet about shortening the axles. john explains that when he called to order the axles he had already sent the rear end off to be narrowed so why would he order stock length axles... they bicker a little bit and the guy finally agrees to have UPS pick up the axles. he says it'll take a week or so to get them, cut them, and resend them. john tells him that is fine since our posi unit is still on back order it really doesn't matter. then the guy tells us that they got two posi units in and one is ours and it is being sent out tomorrow. LOL john says whatever - just pick up the axles and fix them. they hang up. all is hunky dory.

about 10 minutes later he gets a call. its strange. its tracy from strange. she begins to tell john that he never ordered shortened axles or she would have written it down. john tells her the same thing he told the other guy. she insists that he didn't order them that way and started getting snotty with him. he hung up on her instead of saying what he wanted to say.

she calls right back. john asks her if she is calling him a liar. she says no. he asks her if she remembers the conversation so well to tell him what else he ordered. she confessed she didn't remember the details of their original conversation. he told her he was too busy to talk to her anymore. she tells john that strange will pay for half of the shipping to send the axles back. john says no way is that acceptable. she continues to argue that this was not her fault and that strange would only pay half. john told her the deal was already made with the other guy for strange to pick up the tab since it was their fault. she tells john that she will give him a list of places local to us that can cut the axles. john tells her no deal and that strange pays for everything or they can cancel the order. she finally relents and lets john get off the phone.

she called back 10 minutes later with the return authorization number to return the axles. she apologized for the heated conversation with john but still refused to accept responsibility for the fuck up.

word from the wise, make them read your order back to you just like you have to do at mcdonalds.

Strange would not own up to their fuck up. So I had to ship these back and get a credit and order new ones and have them ship the right ones.

I didn't have time to argue with them. The dead line for the customer to pick up the rear is tomorrow at noon. And I spent almost 3 hours driving around today to find eight 3/8x24 grade 8 bolts for the housing ends. Seams Home depot sells nuts 3/8x24 but not the bolts, then every ace around here had three. I even had to drive to the Ace down by country side mall/Gearhead today. I had to steal the backing plates off my new rear to finish this. :nono:

I screwed up my drivers side lip by cutting relief notches. I was told that was the best thing since sliced bread. Everywhere that I cut a notch... about 6" apart or so, it pulled the metal in and looked like ass. Later I was told that I should have cut the notches every 3/4"-1" or so. I did the passenger side with no cutting and turned out okay.

I tried a fender roller device but with the narrowed rear, it wouldn't reach the fender.

cliff notes: underdrive pulleys and black magic fans are poo poo.

another update...

i used to have a difficult time driving my car to work. i drive 30 miles one way (about an hour) and during the warmer months, which here in florida accounts for about 10 out of the 12 months) my car would run warm.

without the a/c on she would run about 190 or so. with the a/c on... well, i'd have to shut the a/c off when she hit 215 or so. that was usually about half way home.

that sucks.

so our first purchase was a high flow water pump. didn't help.

our next purchase was an upgraded flex-a-lite black magic fan... the black magic extreme. didn't work.

i was left sweating in my car and scratching my head. i was not happy.

so we decided to go back to square one. i have underdrive pulleys on my car. we designed the turbo kit with them on. john decided to put the stock pulleys back on the car to speed the water pump back up (thank you ray!). well we couldn't get the stock crank pulley back on because of the down tube, so we settled for just putting the stock water pump pulley back on.

then john did a test on the black magic extreme fan. he took the radiator and fan assembly out and put it to the paper test. we were actually disappointed to see how weak the pull of this fan was; how close the paper had to be before the fan would suck it up. and the pull was almost non-existent on the outer edges of the radiator.

john got an idea about dual fans. so we bought a regular old summit brand dual 11" fans and installed them. we did the paper test with these fans as well and they pulled to paper in from farther away and the pull was almost as strong around the edges of the radiator.

the results? the other day i drove her to work and the weather ended up being 96 for the high and on the way home in late afternoon traffic with my a/c on she got up to 188 degrees at the hottest.

now thats what i'm talkin about!

non heated tires + powerglide + transbrake + on the street = no hope at all for traction:crack: Thanks for the ride John! :D

PS, the MTs fit perfect and hook great for me at only 20 PSI. now i just need to buy a stronger clutch. Its always something

lol glad you enjoyed the ride miles. hehehe yeah, tranny brake launches on the street = no traction. john let off when her back end crossed the center line.

ain't happening again! i can't do this anymore. i HATE not being able to drive my car. after we are done with this the next step is to send her to the body shop for paint. that will discourage any further mods. i think it will anyways.

this was at the dyno. the turbo fab was finished, but the kit was raw. it hadn't been coated yet and the body work hadn't been done. we figured why make it all pretty if it ain't quite right yet and have to take it all back apart.
