i used to be big time into systems but now i'm more into making my vehicles lighter and faster, but my brother has yes i know its shit but it was free, a legacy 1000 watt, 2 channel amp. we hooked it up and it worked perfectly hooked up to my alpine R12. after a while we took that out and put in 2 rockford punch 12's. one of those blew so we put the alpine back in. we turned it on and it started smoking but it was still hitting like normal. i took it apart and this is what i found

Thats a Mosfet switch, looks like it melted and sent straight current through the board. if theres no other board damage you can probably replace the switch and get it running again.
I replaced the stock switches with a mosfet switch from radio shack (part 276-2072) and it worked for a while - the board ones are more beefy than what I replaced it with(I think the original was a 25amp N and I used the before mentioned 5amp N switch).
Its a straight switch so you should be able to "saulter" it in =/

Oh, I think the cause is the sub wired to a very low ohm load or the gain is too high.
I agree. (Not sure if we can use links?) but, this company has every MOSFET switch I have ever needed with over 600 different switches in stock. If you remove the switch and call them with the id #'s, they can give you the exact replacement. I also agree that the load was wrong (were the speakers DVC and wired up improperly or bridged in any way?) Good luck...

Why would you go from a Type R to Punches?
