View Full Version : My buildup progress.

It's been a long process for me, but I feel like I am finally making some headway on my project and thought I'd share. I welded up some of the holes in the engine bay and painted it. I've never painted prior so it's definately not perfect but I dont think it turned out too bad considering.
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/7376/buildup1ir2.jpg
The area that is cut out on the passenger side was chopped up by a local shop so I decided to cut the area out and later I will add in panels once I have the turbo sitting back in there so I can make a template and will paint it to match.

Old K-member removed here
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/5506/buildup3sv8.jpg
With the new UPR Chrome-moly K-member -crappy pics I know, it's a cheap camera! http://www.need2speed.com/vb_forums/images/smilies/sadleek.gif I couldn't bolt the A-arms in yet because UPR didn't send the "hardware kit" so I called them up, they sent it out yesterday and I just got it today. I'm going to get busy here in a few and slap them on.
http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/8205/buildup4wk1.jpg
Coilover kit just hanging there until I decide which brakes to go with, I'm thinking Areospace, but this guy I know keeps saying Strange!

UPRs 4 bolt CC plates.
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/6086/buildup6lj2.jpg
Heres my Bennett shortblock and I took some pics of the heads but the camera sucked and I'm sure my photography skills had something to do with it to lol, and they turned out blurry so I didn't post them. They are Street heat Hi ports with a little work done to 'em.
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/7821/buildup7be0.jpg
I'm going to retain the A/C and power brakes for now but will be converting to a manual rack before I start setting the motor in.
Btw, I bought some Cobra bumper covers a while back and have painted the front bumper cover but still have to do the rear. I didn't intend to make a fobra, but I loved the look of the Cobra front cover and bought a front and rear so I've decided to go ahead and complete the look with some snake badges as well. Oh well to the Fobra haters out there. All I have to say, is that if it can't keep up with a stock cobra then I have bigger issues to worry about! http://www.need2speed.com/vb_forums/images/smilies/laugh.gif
I still have a long way to go and I've talked with Trans. Physicians about building the AODE for me when the time comes. He seems pretty confident that he can build me one that will work! http://www.need2speed.com/vb_forums/images/smilies/headbang.gif
Hope you like it so far!

Finally got the rearend back! I have to give mad props to William Bodley at Bodley racing and Fabrication in Clearwater! I have nothing but good things to say about him.
1. He kept in contact with me and kept me informed. That is a major rarity to find these days.
2. A super nice guy to do busniess with even tho I had him change things around at the last minute and kept bugging him with misc questions.
3. I am super impressed with the quality of his work.
Amanda, please let Donald know I really appreciate him hooking me up with William.
The rearend now has:
9" flanges
chrome-moly 1350 pinion yoke
TA girdle
35 spline Mosers
Moser spool
3:55s
custom bracing
welded tubes
narrowed 3.25" per side
powder coatedHere are some pics, but excuse the garage, it is a total mess atm.. I cropped out a little.

Well ordered my lower control arms, upper control arms and anti-roll bar, but I still need those tires. At this point I'd take some worn out 325 50 15 M/T DRs just as long as they held air, so I could go ahead and order/fit the tubs check clearances etc. Other than the tires, I need to get some coil-overs with brackets. After that, I'll be working on the fuel system so since I'm working at the rearend, I went ahead and removed the stock gas tank and cut out the spare tire well since I will be running a fuel cell.
Here are some pics of the rearend in to get an idea of what I'm looking at but this is with the stock control arms. The pics suck, it was getting dark out and my camera is a cheap one. I tried to lighten it up but I'm not the best with photoshop.
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/4967/rearshot800xgc7.jpg
Here is another crappy pic of the wheel to fender clearance. I still havent rolled the fender lips yet so I think I might be okay. If you look close you can see the driver side fender to wheel clearance is closer than the passenger side fender to wheel clearance. I have bolts pushed in without the nuts so we'll see what the clearance is once I get the new control arms in.

I bolted the rearend in today with the upr uppers and lowers to see how it would sit. I don't have the coil-overs yet, so I just have a block between the frame and the rearend on each side.

I called today and ordered my Q1A rear coilover kit and lower brackets. I'm gonna have to wait tho until the weekend after next before he will have room to take in my car. So unless you are gonna wait until after then to put the motor in, you got me beat. ;)
I'll probably go ahead and start putting the pan on and heads on tho in the mean time. I gotta order my head gaskets and studs too.

I put the heads on and used Cometic MLS gaskets and ARP 1/2" head studs.
I needed to know if the plumbing would still fit right with the Hi-Ports, and if the oil drain port would work where I wanted it to be. I was glad to see that everything looks like it's gonna work.

The rear better work out!
As for the tranny,,, (I cringe when I say this),,, I want to run an AODE fully built, manual valve body, brake and everything else that can be done to it to strengthen it up along with a lock-up converter. If that doesn't work out, which I am hoping it will, I'm leaning towards a TH350. Fernando at Transmission Physicians claims that he can build one to withstand 1000hp and will guarantee it for a year.

Man, keep the negative comments to yourself! J/K but I do hope you're wrong. ;) and tell Mike to call me.
When I first started thinking about this project, I took the car to Sam at Coastal for a base dyno pull (185 rwhp.. Back off Bishes!!). He said he was running an aode from lentech (I'm not sure how radical) and he hasn't had any issues running 8s. This may be an apples to oranges comparison as far as I know. However, since T.P. will guarantee it for a year, I will see how it holds up and if it doesn't work out, I'll have him go through it again and sell it. I'm going to try and make it work. I think I'm more hopefull than I am confident about it, but like I said, I'm still going to try. Wish me luck!

As far as the tranny bro, do the t-350 on the 1st go around.....I dont think youll be driving it daily on long runs and w/turbo set up youll have high gears, so it will still be friendly on "cruises" :D G/L
AOD buiders SAY they can handle the power, but what is questionable is, how long??

Yea, what ^^ said. You probably wont see it once I put the seam sealer on and paint it. As for the cage, when I get my seats mounted and get some space cleared under the dash, he is going to finish it. He said it will certify to 8.50 then, so that should be all of the cage I'll ever need and then some.
Thanks y'all!
I think I'm going to try and get the spacer cut down some so the intake doesn't sit as high. I mean it sits high anyway, but I think without having the valve covers on and fuel rails it just makes it look that much taller.
Edit: added a pic on the engine bay with valve covers to see if it would make the intake not look as big.

I have a 4" cowl atm and it doesn't look like it's gonna clear. I still need to bolt up the tranny to see how everything will truely sit. Also, I will be running a Fox style tb, so I'll have to see about getting some piping fabbed up to fit. I'll wait on that tho, I think I'll be going with a different turbo.

Rich gave me The Wheel, from JW for my setup. It's basically a stronger SFI 164 tooth flexplate. On it is an adapter for a GM conversion, I am told. If the 4r70w doesn't hold up, I'll be needing it. Here is a pic:

Adrenalin
05-21-2008, 06:12 AM
It's a SilverFox transmission. He comes highly recommended. The transmission is a 4R70W with a man v/b w/brake and I'm going to chance a lock-up setup. I've been a little indecisive on a few things but this is the latest. Dan has put up with it thus far with no complaints!
As for the lifters (Still probably going with FMS), I decided to save the money and spend it on the trans/converter and get back to the lifters, girdle, valve covers etc. and stuff later.
So, are you staying safe over there bro?

I'm not sure what the extent of the capabilities of the XFI, but Lock-up will be on a button and only for cruising. I'm not supposed to use lock-up when I'm racing. I was going to use the beaumann unit which would control the trannys shift at whatever set rpm up and down as well as program lockup as well, but I keep hearing mixed stories on using an automatic vb vs a manual so I'll just go manual. If the tranny holds up with a manual vb then later on sometime, I might try the automatic vb, but that would be way way down the road.
I hear ya, it's been a long time since I've done any salt water fishing.

Thanks to Josh for getting me motivated to work on the stang some with all the cage painting talk. And a pic with the hood on. I am suprised that the hood shut with the intake sitting on. It has to be super close under there, it's hard to tell how close it is. It may touch with gaskets on. The true test will be when the tranny bolts in and if it tilts the motor some.

I might see about lowering the rear of the car a little more, but I'm not sure how the clearance between the axle tubes and frame rails will work if I go any lower. I don't want the two to hit if I go over a set of rail-road tracks or a dip in the road or something.

I'm not supposed to use lock-up when I'm racing
Do they say not to use the lockup because it wont tranny or converter wont take the abuse? Not sure about the Ford lockups but on GN guys love the lock up w/ good converter. Most guys would set up in chip or manul button to lock up sooner than factory specs to take away the "slip" of converter and let the snail do the pullin. It actually keeps the heat down in the tranny.Like I & R was saying picks up MPH on the big end. Nice job on the under carrige detail

Dirty Dog converter info:
The stall should be about 4000 but I wasn't sure as to a HP number to tell him so we will see how it does and adjust it as needed.
I asked Alan (Dirty Dog) for some info on the converter he was buiding for me and here was his reply:
The front cover I use is a very thick billet piece. the down side is it is heavier than other companies covers, but it is also much stronger.
The lockup piston I use is a fully billet piece which is about 4 times as thick as what PI uses and also larger in diameter giving more clutch surface area and stronger hold. The PI lockup piston is a thin plate of steel welded on to a stock early design (ford updated it in 96 due to too many lockup shudder problems) piston.
The turbine I use is a 9.5 GM which is the same as any of the aftermarket companies use. I then send this to be furnace brazed for strength. PI does this as well. Most other companies do not. I then tig weld the tips to make the component virtually indestructible.
The spline is then fully welded into this piece and I only use hardened splines to prevent spline strippage.
The next component is the stator. This is the serious upgrade to this converter. PI uses the stock GM roller clutch as do most companies. I am replacing this component with a much stronger roller clutch because I fear your power would break that stock component.
The pump is done as the turbine is I have them furnace brazed. If I make stall changes to them I tig the tips as well. Usually the braze is sufficient to hold these just fine.
