i have a 400w rms bumper sub
had another but it blew out
friend gave me a 1000w max volfenhag sub
had the 1000w max and 400w rms subs running off same channel on my amp
amp is audiobahn 800rms, 1600w max
and the volfenhag sub blew
started to smell like burning
so i took it out
then it completely stopped hitting
wtf?

You shouldn't blow anything that quick unless you install it wrong or its a factory defect.

install and tuned wrong - wrong box for sub, dc the amp, or has no idea on what he is doing!!!!!!

Wrong box wouldn't lead to a burning VC.
Wrong box wouldn't lead to a burning VC.
It would if he made a very small sealed box, the VC would never cool if he was maxing it out, causing it to burn out/melt whatever...

o yes it would - to big would cause the sub to get out of contol of the ampa and flapp like a fish out of water

That would lead to a broken tinsel lead/suspension not a burnt VC, and that would be from not using a subsonic filter.

That explains his big box theory, now try to explain mine?

i highly doubt he was maxing out anything of his with the equipment he has/had.

Maxing out in the sense that he was at the highest volume he was able to put through... After a while of continuous playing the VC's would get too hot and just burn out, no?

how the hell do you install such high end equipment(and actually do a good job) and know nothing about what you install?
You are half right though, a small box would increase the resistance and further protect the subwoofer (to a point)

How could a wrong size box burn up the VC? It could break the suspension, tinsel leads, ect. But maybe I am forgetting something?

Sorry didn't see this, if what you said was true than an Aperiodic Membrane enclosure would never work.

The box should be built so that the cone's movement will create air pressure behind it - a large box will have very little pressure to puch back against the sub. because of that the sub will be able to move further than its design.
once the sub extends beyond the magnet, the resistance in the coil will drop. The lower the resistance the more current that travels through the cone. More current = more heat = blown vc.
Subs with woven tinsel leads will probably outlast the voice coil in this situation.
