We have 8 more spots open for the Car Controle Clinic April 22nd.
Its designed for new drivers, But with the Skid pad and auto X style afternoon set up. Its probably worth it for any one that need to work on getting the car sideways to the basics of hand positioning on the wheel.
See,,, http://www.fscbmwcca.org/fsc_042107.htm (http://www.fscbmwcca.org/fsc_042107.htm)
for details.
Note: The instructors I have been in contact with. I will PM you all the data as soon as I get it. You can get the basics off the link above. Your welcome to join the class at Reeves on Sat if you wish. But its optional. Sun is the actual event where your services are needed.

Hey, Barry. Got the info email. May try to attend the class just to get a better handle on what we're doing and what the students have been told in class.
I see we're running 3 exercises, I presume 3 groups... how many students will we have? How many students per instructor? I just want to mentally prepare myself for how much car-hopping I'll be doing! :)

Hi Loren
Currently we have 15 instructors and 32 drivers. We will take up to 40 drivers. So 3 groups 5 instructors 12 ish cars.
We are planning to have the instructors move with the students this time. Last year the drivers that did the skidpad were getting dizzy from all the spinning. So this time all the instructors will get to do all the exercises. Plus we are leaving time to sit and talk for a few min before jumping cars.. ( thats the plan.. i think it will work out ).
Since it takes time to wet down the area. The skid pad will only be run after lunch. Lunch will be provided, its salads and pizza ( like red baron ish )
Let me know if there are any other Questions.
ALSO Al G are you going to be there?

Sounds like you've got everything well-planned. Should be a good time, and very worthwhile for the students.

Looks like my schedule opened up for this weekend. I'm not leaving till next weekend. if you need help, I spent over 5 years autocrossing BMWs
Tell me if you need an instructor. helper or otherwise. I have some tires I need to burn off.

Yes and Yes. We are at 15 instructors, so if there are any No shows, we can use a few extra.
And yes we always can use helpers. The afternoon will be Auto X type courses with an open break around lunch for instructors to take students out for drives.
If you can make it I would appreciate any extra help. Just give me an Email so I can send you the details/ schedule/.
THanks
Barry

Not to be a dick, but there's no 'e' in 'control'. :)

I think it is the preferred Canadian Spelling, like Colour, Cheque, or Shoppe.
I think it's going to catch on.
You'd spell it that way if you had to get your Cossie parts through Canadia.

This is going to be one long day but honestly when you see all the teens actually smiling at the end, its worth it.

But my new R compounds are Tyres.. from England..

Made by Cooper, In Ohio.
Cooper builds pretty good stuff they just can't market it here at a premimum price, so Their Drag stuff is Mickey Thompson and Road Race is Avon. For years Hoosier Street tires were rebadged Coopers, but Hoosier recieved many complaints about that.

It was a good time, always glad to help kids (or adults) improve their skills. Definitely harder work than it seems... I was exhausted by the end of the day!
Anybody got any good photos from the day?

Thanks to Loren for taking the role as team leader.
(and for bringing the Lil' Jaguar.)
It was weird having passengers in the back seat.
It must have been wild for them on the skid pad.

I have to say, My mother would not have been so quiet or helpful. shoot she still has the deathgrip when she comes down to visit, and I drive. and I've been driving with her in the car for 16 years. some things never change.
anyway it was very good. some of the students needed some prodding to get out of their comfort zone but once they did they had a blast. The one student in the black GTI was very good for his first event, he will be a very good autocrosser if he keeps it up

Mr. GTI seemed to have an attitude problem,
but I tried really hard to work with him.
Maybe he is just a really quiet guy.
He got a lot better as we did each exercise.
He was sitting like Coolio when we started,
so I got him seated correctly.
He did listen to me, that's a plus.

Yeah, I think he started with not so much attitude but... I guess a "look" about him. I didn't see his beginning seating position, but it jives with the vibe I got from him. Typical teen "cool kid" veneer, really.
To his credit, he did loosen up as the day went on, actually talked about some things, gave some feedback, asked some questions. And he did seem to be listening to the instruction. I'm sure he learned a lot and gained some valuable experience. You could tell that he was accustomed to driving agressively... a lot of what he learned was how to NOT overdrive the car and how to properly control/prevent FWD understeer.
The only student I had that I questioned a bit was the really young one. He looked more like he was 13 than 15, and his car control was pretty weak. Probably just not enough basic seat time.
Note for next time: try to allot more space (runoff space) for the wet skidpad. I had several students spin off into the cones. The cones should be far enough out that they don't hit them. Ideally, I'd have liked it better if the sprinklers were shooting from one side rather than the middle, but I know water pressure was an issue.
For anyone who does this in the future, be aware that it's nearly impossible to get a FWD car w/ ABS to go tail out at 30 mph without pulling the hand brake. I'd hoped I could get some "natural" slides going on, but it just wouldn't happen. So, plan on yanking the handbrake on them. Give them at least one solid 180+, and after that, just give them enough of a pull to kick the tail out and let them practice recovery. (this little bit of info would have been useful to most of the instructors... including myself... but we eventually figured it out)
Was highly disappointed that I didn't get to take a single wet skidpad run in a RWD car!

How did you set up the wet skidpad at Brooksville? Where'd the water come from?
Muddy

There are a couple faucets at the near end of the runway.
I had to pull the handbrake on a lot of cars for the skidpad last year. I also had someone run deep into the grass on me. :-o
