my only thought is maybe the amp is still on (constantly) and taking the face plate off is some cuasing a short. I don't know, I'm a man ...not a machine!!!!!!!

lool .. let me refraze that and put more details in it i have an alpine head unit .. which the face detaches from it ... and also an alpine amp and a kicker sub ..
so everytime i start the car (without the face in the head unit) my sub will start thumping makin the same sound my muffler does when the car idles ... now once i put the face in the head unit the sound will stop and obviously thump to the music..
makes more sense?

It does sounds like the amp is cutting on without a signal and with a bad ground. The thump is being produced by the amp through the sub. so it has to be on some how.

No, from what i gather the sub doesn't just have a turn-off thump, its apparently continuing to thump "to his muffler". Now honestly i don't see how a metal tube that directs your exhaust gas flow makes your subwoofer magically tune with it on the same frequency......., but I can assume that it might have to do with his acceleration? Might have to do with the alternator, though i still am pretty confused.

its a low frequency alternator whine, similar to the high pitched whine you get from a 4 channel improperly hooked up. its extremely unusual and i had a similar problem on my volvo when i had it but i had too thin of a power wire and that was what had caused my "issue" tho, its nothing to really worry about, but in my volvo the sub didn't "thump" it simply played the same general tone as my exhaust system played but at an extremely low volume. two things to try. try re grounding the amp. and then try disconnecting the rca's from the amp and the h/u to see if your getting a bad singnal from your h/u or from the rca cables

That's what i'm betting my money on.

I can see that but he says the radio has no face plate on it. Therefore (I think) the HU is not on. The amp has to be on. But how unless he has it on a switch. I give up. What's the answer to this riddle

What is your remote turn on for your amp connected to? Assuming your amp is still on when your faceplate is removed.

^good advice....not!
this happened to me a few years back. i connected the remote wire to the wire that was always hot, and the amp was picking up the alt. but only at idle, if i hit the gas it wouldn't matter.

that's what I am saying constantly on + poor ground + no signal = the crap he hears

if its constantly making a sound, and its not the same as the tone your muffler is putting out, it creates whats called a beat frequency, you guys in the audio world know what that is i'm assuming, its lik when you and a different car are going the same speed, but your exhaust notes are different, you'll hear a WEIRD noise, thats the beat frequency and sounds like the same thing your hearing now
unless i totally misunderstood everything

Nah, he's talking about when the stereo is technically supposed to be "off" since the faceplate of the Headunit is removed. The sub continues to play.

my remote wire for the amp is hooked up to the power wire that goes to the radio... so even when the face plate is off the amp is getting power ..now its not a loud thump ...it just like a lil shake of the sub but it does have some sound.. now this only happens at idle i tried messing with the ground wire and it kinda stopped for a while but then it came back

You need to hook the remote wire up to the remote lead on your deck. If that's not available, you'll have to look for a different switched source (ignition), and if that still doesn't work...you'll have to put a switch on it so that you can turn it off manually when music isn't playing.

Car audio illiterate not everyone is well versed in it. But seriously find a good place to drop a ground, sand it will well. Make sure you don't make it more tha 2 ft long. And make sure you use a good sized wire. Here is a thought, tap the remote wire (from amp) to the wire the red wire from you headunit is hooked up to. This way it will only come on with the key. G/l ps you confused the shit out of everyone....except me hehehehe. I knew what was going on becuase I fix a friend of mine's set up.

The shorter it is, the better. Try and use a ground that roughly the same size as your power wire, and bolt down to a nice thick bare metal part of chassis.
you'll be good to go.

the lower the better. so 4ga would be sufficient.

You need to find a new switched source of power for your remote turn on if your radio doesn't have a blue remote turn on coming out of it. Doubt this has anything to do with the size of your wire.
