Best way to get started is to join an association like NASA and race in a Spec series, like Spec RX7, Spec Miata or Spec E30.

Best place to start is autocross. there are classes for every car and driver is much more important then car. once you get good enough to kick some local tail then climb up the racing ladder at any club. I personally like nasa since they have the most logical classing and you can time trial without a cage.
Next major autocross is FAST in ST. Pete Feel free to talk to anyone they are just about the friendliest bunch of folks one could want. St pete is a smaller location but great for learning car control if youy need an instructor Fast has some great ones. Myself or Loren are allways glad to help.
Most people use autocross as a stepping stone, as jobs get better and your experence increases it's a easy transistion. Trying to go right into track driving without autocross is an expensive lesson.
Good luck
