ok i have 2 memphis audio 12's that i believe are 750 watt subs. could anyone tell me how many cubic feet the box needs to be and how i would go about measuring how many cubic feet a box is? any help is appreciated thanks in advance
check manufact' website. If nothing there, grab all the parameters and enter them into a box building program like winISO.

cubic ft can be measured by multiplying the inner dimensions of hte box such that
. (length * width * height)
. ______________________ = cubic feet
. 1728
Typically, a 1.5cuft chamber tuned to 35hz will sound decent with a variety of subs.
ok so i got that winisd and its saying my spl for my sub is 96db. is that a good db or no?
*Before you read any of this as fact, please read note on bottom!*
Its kind of hard to explain because i do not exactly know how it works but the SPL that it displays does not mean that is the actual output SPL you'll get on say... a meter or something.
basically all that graph is showing you is how 'efficient' that box will be to the speaker itself and in reproducing sound as a result. Obviously, the flatter the graph line, the better the response will be since it won't be so focused/specialized to one specific frequency and thus sounding terrible in real life.
You have to be aware that even though the program can show you the ideal graphs and build specifications, they are contained in an infinite universe and perfect world. We don't live in a perfect world and you're not perfect, there will be mistakes. But trying to get your box and setup made and put in the best way possible will help overcome that.
Good luck.
*None of this is to be regarded as fact, i try to explain things in the way that i understand them and the ways that they were explained to me. If i am incorrect in any of my above statements, by all means please correct me in a non-insulting way or in such a form to intentionally cause me embarrassment.*

Note to OP(kabuki mono kid):
Also do not forget to take into account the displacement the subwoofer's magnet consumes within the box after you use that formula.

so your saying its a fact that :::
Think of it like this, if some lame pathetic excuse for a male hits on 100 chicks, at least 2-3 of them have to be easy enough to go for it.
So you just hit on every chick you see, say 500 a month, well boom, you've landed at least 30 chicks!
That's the first mathematical formula a black guy learns!
well rock on then.....!!!

im basically just tring to make a better box then i got now lol thanks to everyones help so far
Doesn't exactly matter where you put them. A favorite is putting them in the middle of the box between the two subwoofers.

yeah i know but i had to.... back on topic
just put the ports close to the center like P057 said, it doesn't make that much of a difference or not enough that your going to notice from the cabin of the car 1 in movements of the port
as for better sound if you sold those or traded them you would probably get a better cleaner sound out of 10s or 12s but thats just what i think... then again i'm about to put 4 15in vega's (pro audio not car audio freebee's) i'm my truck just for kicks

now you've got the idea.. not the sell it all part but put the numbers in to something that says the box of x by y by z is best, use that as your base and just wing it, thats how a lot of the guys get started in building great car audio systems. good luck keep us updated on how YOU think it sounds. its your gear in your car so how you think it sounds is what really matters

well i dont really have a choice on speakers b/c i doubt any one will buy my speakers b/c there not in the best of condition apperence wise but they sound pretty good. i have a del sol so its not like i can put anything to big in there b/c when i take the targa to off there isnt much room left

the speakers are 12s not 15s idk why but all the memphis speakers on the winisd have 15 b4 them but if u look at the measurements for the box that they suggest u use it gives u 18x28x11 so it cant be 15s it has to be the 12s i got

the ports needs to be on the same face as the woofer - if not it will alter the phase of half of the stroke which will change as you approach the tuning frequency and that will make blah sound...
So just put the port on the same face as the sub.

thanks. and on winisd it says to use pvc pipe. is this true or no?
jriggs
03-17-2007, 11:21 PM
instead of pvc you can get cardboard packing tubes from the post office they are cheaper and easy to cut and try different port length. thats what i've used in my past boxes and they worked out great
and oups my bad on the thinking they were 15s, i didn't look at everything at 1st 12s should sound great without much "slop"
ok i think im gonna give it a shot and if it doesnt come out good im just gonna safe screw it and sell it all. but thanks for everyones help. mainly po57
thanks to the others of folks who have 'educated me' in a sense to just give out my interpretations on the subject.
+1 on the trying shit out, you really want to get to know your system? try a bunch of different shit out, if you have the time, patience and money -- keep redoing it and get it to where you like it.
sorry drunk post. :nerd:
