View Full Version : D16 Civic vs. Camaro SS

So I finished swapping in my friends D16Z6 motor in his Honda Civic CX (2042lbs.). After getting rid of all the little bugs and troubleshooting various abnormalities, we decided to take the car out for a spin. The car pulls pretty hard for a 1.6L. Well we are coming back from getting something to eat and we roll up to this white Camaro SS. His car had exhaust from what I could tell, and possible more stuff done. So my friend gives him a rev to see if he's game. No response. So the light turns green and we both ride out slowly in first gear, neither of us shifting yet. Seeing as there are no other cars around, my friend decides, "Why the hell not," and gives a slow 3 honks. Sure enough the Camaro gets on it with us. To our amazement his car just blew by us like we were standing still. I mean he literally launched the car out in mid first gear. My friend wound his motor all the way out as quick as it would go and by the time we hit third gear his break lights were lighting up 20 cars down the road. So we hurry to catch up to him down the road to have a chat. I was surprised to learn all he had was exhaust and a "lid?", which I think was B.S. by the way he pulled us. BTW, it was a 2000 Camaro SS from what he said. My friend's car has the D16Z6 swapped CX hatch, with AEM cold air intake, Tanabe exhaust, DC Sports header, testpipe, Exospeed cam, and it's tuned with an VAFC. In the previous car it was in the motor put down 132whp/106tq, not to bad for the weight of his hatchback that he has now. Still that Camaro was pretty nice, he ripped us good. Good run if you're out there...by they way I think you had more that what you told us, .

well, its like a 200hp difference there

GTman85
02-09-2007, 01:05 PM
An SS with exhaust and lid is probably a 12 sec car with a good driver. Plus that 200 hp difference helps just a tad. :) Good death none the less

Yeah, but those cars are really heavy. I figured it would be a close race. He was probably spraying a 100 shot or something.

No they arent that heavy and im sure he wasnt spraying a 100 shot. An exhaust and lid LS1 SS is a fast car.

Maybe if GM put half as much R&D into headlights, window motors, and what can only be described as "F-body noises" as they did into the LS1 those cars would be a little nicer.

the only differences in a z28 and a SS is suspension and the looks. the motor is exactly the same. and a bolt on LS1 is good enough for mid 12s with slicks and a good driver.

bone stock and slicks is mid 12's if not quicker.

boltons and slicks should be low 11's with the right setup.

You guys are out of your minds. Camaros don't do 12s stock  . Maybe with nitrous and slicks...maybe. Like I said I've driven one before and they are NOT impressive. The one I raced, clearly had alot of mods, and nitrous, if he was able to blow my friends Civic away like that. I don't hate on Camaros, just those that think they're so fast stock. My friend has run bolt ons V8 Camaros before in his D16 hatch, and we were mostly even with them. They are big heavy cars (3500+lbs.). Power to weight my friend.

Torque is overrated. It needs torque just to move a heavy car like that. If you look up Car & Drive magazine for 1998, they've tested the Camaro SS at a 14.5@97mph. They are very good drivers, so the average Joe is going to be high 14s like I said.

Let me just ask some of you who own the SS. Are they really THAT fast modded? I've driven a stock one, but I mean common. I'm sure they respond to mods just like any other car. I put a big shot of nitrous on my friends D16 Civic and he's gonna run 11s, so what's the difference.

Torque is overrated.

First off, you need to learn a bit more about cars. You do realize that hp is just a calculation that you get FROM torque?

HP- Torque X RPM/5252

In stock form the are low 13 sec cars. Curb weight is ~3500lbs. With bolt-ons, tires, and good driving they are 11 sec cars all day. -Mark

Evangelion
02-12-2007, 10:57 AM
Ughhh! You V8 guys just don't get it. There is no f*cking way a Camaro does 12s with bolt ons. I understand torque is very important, yet overrated for the Camaro, because it needs that torque just to move it's fat ass. That's why most Honda's don't have alot of torque because they're light. 160hp in a Civic is more than enough to compete with most V8s on the road, yet most people don't understand this and the power to weight ratio concept. I have run down plenty of cars that I've shouldn't in my '99 Civic Si. A couple of nights ago I ran my other friends 240 with turbo and I pulled him. He said his car put out over 200ft/lbs. of torque, yet I only put out in the 100s. Can you explain this? Torque in heavy cars like these are overrated, because it's necessary to move the damn car.

I have More mods then your friends hatch and I've personally been ripped a good one by a SS on slicks with little to no mods. Check out streetfire.net for videos. They have Stock SS Camaro's running 13's into the low 12's. Do some more research bro. Your making my Honda Look bad.

Yes, it's a single cam D16Z6 Civic. The VTEC is not really noticable on a D series. My B16 in my Civic is about even with his car due to the power to weight difference, and is quite dramatic when it kicks in. I might be the first Honda owner to not actually like it, but as long as the power is there I'm happy.

Evangelion
02-12-2007, 10:20 PM
Just did some research on the Camaro SS on LS1forum.com. I guess they are pretty decent cars. From what I've been reading they can take lots of power and are very reliable. I guess I was mistaken. I still wonder if the one we raced was still bolt ons. I guess you can say I like the motor that's in the Camaro more than the car itself. Just researched some videos and they sound pretty sick with cams, better than my Civic actually. I'm trying really hard to keep my love for my Honda.
