Some how / some way the original thread was deleted. Let's start this again.

Driven Concepts is very happy and proud to have the oppertunity to work on a project of this caliber. We will be updating this thread with information and photos as often as we can.

This Supra will not only be able to put out some serious power, but will also have show quality presentation. The owner is an active member of TR, therefore I will leave it up to him to post up his expectations of this vehicle.

This is one of those projects where not a single expense has been spared and it will not stop here.

Motor = the best
Parts = the best
Paint = the best
etc... = the best

Here are some recent pictures.....

My wife and I own this car. We are excited about having Driven Concepts put this together for us. We started this prokect with fixing the engine bay from the ground up. You can see EVERYTHING is out.

The new motor is fully built with a lightly built head.

We will work our way up to 4 digit HP #'s with the help and assistance of Driven Concepts.

We will make this a show quality piece how much detail???

Well, DC even sent our A/C lines to get powder coated since they and I wern't happy with how clean 13 year old lines can get.

Chrome? Yep, polishing is nice, but keeping it clean in a car built by DC to be daily driven it's not acceptable, so EVERYTHING will eventually be chromed.

I will post full specs later on.

Are you going for 1000whp or just at the crank? I'm curious to see if you are wanting to break the 1kwhp mark are you going to spray it at all to get into the 4 digit mark?

1K RWHP. No need for spray.

Really? I thought the 76GTS was only good for 850-900whp. That's awesome. When's this going to be done?

Kirk
02-05-2007, 11:41 PM
People have made over 1000 with even a SP74 which is what I have on my black car. 1000 is not the goal, but there is no reason why with this car's setup it should not see it.

Really? I thought the 76GTS was only good for 850-900whp. That's awesome. When's this going to be done?

First off, yess 1000 RWHP is the goal not engine HP goal.

Well we may end up a little short after our initial tries... I have a set of hks 280's and a set of 264's. I would like to just sell the 280's and never mess with them, but it may be difficult to get 4 digits without them on the 76. I could've built the head up more, but decided against going CRAZY on the head. I also prefer to stay away from setting up an interferance motor as the 280's would do.

I'm SURE I'll reach at least 950 with this setup without juice and the 280's. I'm thinking the following.... Juice may be a little risky, since I should be running out of fuel a little over 1050HP. The assumtion is both fuel pumps are running at top levels, if not I'll replace them with new OE specs. We'll monitor this through fuel pressure while street tuning.

To answer directly, if I do miss the goal, a wet shot might be an option. Couldn't hurt on the track either, but I prefer not too.

A better an more likely option is to move into a GT42 with an 80mm compressor wheel. Should spool much like the 76, but blow well past 1000RWHP. At that point my injectors will become the limiting factor somewhere around 1080RWHP.

I do believe the 76 will make it. we have a 3.5 bar map sensor and a 5 bar sitting in the glove box.. 35lbs of boost on the 76 will come before any other options.

I enjoy your questions, keep em coming.

So we've concluded the battery will sit in the trunk for sure... We can't have anything ugly there, so here are the battery terminals we'll be using:

Negative Terminal
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w287/pheobo12/-.jpg

Possitive Terminal
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w287/pheobo12/.jpg

We have a yellow top sitting at the shop for it, but maybe we should look into something smaller.

*edit* P.S. These are black chrome...

I've got an update on some of the custom parts... This is the upper timing belt cover for a 2jz. We've decided that since there are no aftermarket replacements, we would make our own. This cover will be made of stamped aluminum then polished to a mirror shine and in my case sent to get chromed.

These are the pics of the pattern. We've taken out the center whole to give it a smoother look.

Uh... yeah, I've gone just a litte overboard, but There is still more to go. We thought we had sent all visible brackets in the engine bay to the get chromed. When we saw the motor back in last week we realized with missed all the ABS brackets. This will cause a serious delay since typical chrome turn around is about 5 weeks.

That puts us into late March!!!

Maybe I can find someones ABS system they aren't using..

I get the feeling the car wont be ready for HIN...

The good news is I won't feel bad if we decide to paint the whole car since that would not be the cause of any delay.

... Call me ...
Will do.

I won't have a tune for C16, so it's pump gas ride or VPimport gas.

Sorry to have misled, Those are not our cam gears, nor is that our motor. That motor was used for test fitting the part and "final acceptance test fit" since the machine shop doing this is Orlando, it was done over there.

On our motor, you will not see the (Polished Titan) cam gears nor the billet timing belt tensioner since we will use this cover. The top half of the cam gears will be covered by a Carbon Fiber spark plug cover that is the same fit as stock.

I want 0 chance of something falling in and making my timing belt jump a gear. This car will not be a Dyno queen, you will see it on the street on a regular basis in tampa.

cheers.

Change in the setup. We now have an SP manifold (currenlty getting chromed) We'll have to decide if we go with SP chromed or VW polished for now.

Ian... Can I get some help here man?

Tim, has brought Linzee out to her first post!!! Congrats on popping her cherry.

While I'm here I might as well provide a real update since some may have subscribed to the thread for updates.

We FINALLY got the VW Manifold in. The SP manifold was at the Chromers, but had not yet been dipped, so we canceled that and overnighted the VW. We sold the SP intake in the same deal. They received the VW today.... This will be THE deciding factor as to wether this car will be at track day or the Civic.

We have received most of the chrome back, I'll take pics and post later this week. Valve covers,Custom ABS cover, Customer Injector cover Turbo housing for the 76, radiator brackets & a few other misc items.

The car is in the paint booth and I'm told the shell will get painted tomorrow. I've seen some of the fiberglass work and am sure I will be very happy. Front and rear bumpers along with some misc parts have already been painted.

We have received a tilton tripple which will most likely wait for phase two for install in late april along with a driveshaft and the TRD diff

There was a problem with the gauge pod and a new one should be here shortly.

As soon as we have the intake back we can fab up the piping and som custom hoses DC is making.

It WILL be done for HIN, not sure if it'll be ready for a shake down run on March 31st though.

For some reason, It only lets me log in as Linzee now.

Actually, the chrome will be VERY easy to take care of. Most people polish everything. Polished parts need to be maintaned and buffed constantly. With Chrome, you can almost windex and wipe clean. Chromed parts are much easier to maintain and get ready for shows then polished parts.

You can't chrome EXTREMLY hot parts like the turbine housing or exhause manifold as it'll turn blue, but everything else should be ok.

It'll contrast very well with all the Carbob Fiber that will be in the engine bay as well.

There is around 2k in chrome under the hood. The intake manifold alone was $600. Special care has to be taken on certain parts. For example, you can't chrome the inside of the compressor housing since tolerances don't allow for it and you can screw up your compressor wheel. The throttle body on the intake has to be taken apart completely for the chrome as well as everything that gets chromed should be polished to a mirror finish before it get's plated.

So when chroming, you pay for a really good polish job and then the chrome job.

Cheers.

P.S. I've never had this much chrome before either.
Everything under the hood has been detailed. Even the A/C lines were powder coated black...

thats so awesome man. thats my goal one day to be able to completely 100% do a car the way I want it done. not just throw on some mods or anything.. Im really interested in seeing where this goes, and hope i can see it in person sometime.

btw its ok if you want to be called powerpuff now

A Lot of the props go to DC on this project. They've done a good job with the paint & body work as you can see with the initial pics of the engine bay. They are assembling the car as well and helping with sourcing a lot of the parts and making sure we don't miss any details.

They have ordered all new weather stripping and have consulted me on what I want to do on a lot of details. When you are ready to put a car together make sure to give them a call, even if it's minor work for now.

Yep, you'll be able to see it on many occasions. It will be shown officially as well as visit most of the local meets when finished. This should be a 9 second street / show car.

and um... no, you can't call me power anything, unless you still want to after I give you a ride...

pheobo

Not sure if this was already covered, but what ems are you guys going to use? Who's tuning it?

We will be running the AEM. I've been running the AEM since the car left the stock twins a couple years ago. It will control boost (with a GM selinoid) and it will control the meth. If needed for the HP goal it will also control the nitrous. An AEM 5 bar map sensor and two widebands will be hooked up as well.

I also run an AEM in the civic.

Vijay (Boost Junkie) will be tunning it. I'll tweak it as needed when he's not around. He'll also drive a few passes in it if I can convince him too. Of course I'll expect him to be a full second faster then me

P.S. I'll have those upper timing belt covers for sale soon if you want one, send me a PM.

wrxrat
03-12-2007, 10:12 AM
Cool, I've had Vijay tune my map-ecu, he's running AEM on his car as well. Why two widebands?

Why two widebands?
+1
I was wondering the same thing....

pheobo
03-12-2007, 10:21 AM
The real question on the widebands is why not?

I'll be running plenty of leaded fuel. If one sensor starts to go, I'll keep my sanity by having the backup.

In reality, the guages for the A/F will be in the glove box and only paid attention to while tunning and during data logging.

Anyone have any reason why not to run to widebands? They're already installed :-)

I need to make it back to that side of town one of these days. If the Poopra makes it to track day I'm going as well. Keep us updated.

I am insane, but the guys at DC are even crazier! DC is getting a lot done and have quite a bit ways to go.

Wether or not it goes to track day is up to DC. No reason this car shouldn't make an event sponsored by them.

Once everything is fabed up and the car is reassembled is where the unknown variables begin and that's the dangerous part. First time we start the motor, who know what issues will pop up. We've done a lot of changes in one phase and in a short period of time. I'm hoping that the weekend of the 23rd and 24th we'll fire it up and see where we stand.

I have no doubt that if the chromer would have had the parts back quicker and I wouldn't have changed the scope of the paint job to 5 x's more then originally planned the car would be running now.

I won't be at track day since I will be in Miami, but look for the Supra. There is a good chance it'll be there - Maybe even do one or two shake down runs on low boost and street tires if I can convince Vijay to run the car.

Good chance for DC to shine... No reason it can't be done assuming there aren't any surprised.

If we fire it up and we have a water leak or... an injector problem or... bad camshaft sensor or... etc. If it's not ready, I would expect those to be the reasons.

At this point here is what's left.

Reassembly
Fab up downpipe & IC piping
Battery relocation
Hook up gauges.

I keep saying the guys at DC are no joke, this will be additional proof.

Cheers,

Well that's on high boost and VPImport. & She does have her Accord for moving the baby or the days she doesn't want to take the Supra...

It'll prolly only be daily driven @ 7-800ish on pump + meth... Hence the reason we are considering getting the RPS C/C and leaving the Tilton on the dining room table. - Don't want to constantly check the wear and don't care for dropping the tranny to change wear plates as needed... Havn't decided let's see. The C/C should hold.

Just dropped off the required parts @ DC... Everything is on track to get the car to track day, even the driver is lined up and ready to go.

As for progress on the car, the motor is back out and a lot of misc things were taken care of. Some test fitting of the intake manifold showed some additional fabrication that had to take place.

It'll be ready for pipe fabrication on Tuesday.

Yeah, these guys do some good paint / body work. Both the body guys, Chris and JR are good at what they do.

In my case we went over board and replaces every rubber seal the car has, on the windows & doors. We went to the extent of ordering new rear quarter panel windows because the rubber seal comes with them. Even the targa plastic that shows just above the window too.

The quality of the paint job will also depend on the quality of the paint you use, but the work will be good either way I have no dobt.

We will be returning the housing for the 76mm turbo. I don't like a couple things with the chrome on it. The 67 will go on and we'll play with it. It does look like a baby turbo in a Supra engine compartment!!!

Notice how the throttle body looks dull next to the intake manifold? The throttle body is polished to a mirror finish, but is still dull next to the chrome.

We've run into some snags with some fuel hoses and fittings, but I think we got most of it being overnighted. The car is def ready for fabbing of the downpipe and charge pipes tomorrow.

Is the exhaust on already?

estimated cost for this project???

Seriously... I don't want to know.
But here is a quick run down lowballing the prices...

$25000 Good condition MKIV 6 spd.
$3500 Built bottom end.
$3000 Built head with mild port.
$2700 VW intake manifold and supporting mods.
$2500 Just in chrome.
$3000 Clutch (traded in the tilton for the RPS C/C)
$1800 Big Boy drive shaft
$1000 TRD Diff
$1500 exhaust manifold (only one of them)
$2500 for both turbos.
$2000 AEM
$7500 Baller paint job that includes replacing every seal possible and engine bay. $1000 just in seals ordered from Toyota.
$1000 HKS Hiper Titanium exhaust.
$1000 custom cooling PWR radiator and custom fan shroud
$1000 Misc Carbon fiber accents
$1000 HKS Type R intercooler

We are at over 60k already and havn't touched labor or fabrication.

Driven Concepts is one of the few shops that I would drop over 30k at. I've trusted them with every aspect of the build and so far all my problems are on parts delays from the chromers or the distributors.

Thanks DC!

Well.... today we had a reality check on the car and where it stands. I do not believe the car will make it to track day at this time.

The major reason, is either Vijay or I need to be there when the car starts. I will be in Miami all of next week and it seems like Vijay will be out as well.

We were going to attempt and fire up the car this weekend, but are a snap ring, a spacer and a washer short for clutch install. For some reason these parts wern't included in the install kit and of course no one stocks them.

Danny, has dont a great job with the downpipe. The picture above was a first design that was modified. It looks large in the picture, but the thing is just HUGE. If everything goes as planned, most if not all the piping will be done tomorrow.

Mike's car looks HAWT with the new wheels...

My lines don't end in blue. They end in black anywhere that is visible. I'm also not using stainless anywhere you can see it and am using a Black line instead.

The blue fittings on the water neck are from the previous setup with the twins. A custom water neck has to be fabricated. An intake pipe won't clear the water neck on all the manifolds we will test. The new pipe and lines will all be black.

Here you can see some of the fittings already on where it makes sense:

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w287/pheobo12/CopyofImage3.jpg

Maybe go with HKS coilovers and deal with Purple instead of Green.

Got to be carefull... while I can get pro starts for the rear, I'll have to change rear breaks to NA. They won't clear up front according to Vijay and I'm not changing the front to NA.

It's my understanding that my only option in 16's are CCW.

I won't mismatch rear's with front's.

The only real choice to make seems to be 16's and keep my TT brakes or 15's and go to NA brakes in the rear.

You should be able to use some Tripolli compound on a buffing wheel and it will cut through the anodization. Then high speed polish it with white jewlers rouge. I've done it on the purple and blue topped Greddy Type S /RS BOV's before. Once you've done that you can have them chromed if you need more bling than that.

Danny,
I'm happy in my pants right now. Thank you for pulling this all nighter off. Your welds are hot and the work so far looks good. Can't wait to see the rest of the pipes.

Ian,
Get the battery in & have someone finish the fuel lines. put the FPR anywhere for now, we'll worry about getting it anodized black and cleaned up later... you can use whatever color AN fittings for now. Jay has several used 90's in -6 we can use until we make another order for the black ones.

If you get the battery and fuel lines on, bolt up the stock flywheel with no cluth / tranny and I'll swing by with the laptop and we can fire it up! IT'll be a big jump for the car to make it to track day. Remember the car needs to be on the road no later then Thurs so we can tune and break in the motor and clutch by Sat!

As much as Jay wanted to work on this project, this is not his work. As for Glenn, he maybe capable of doing work like this, but dependability is a serious issue for him. As far as fabrication goes, Glenn has been known to do some serious work, but you can't be the best, or even good at something when you cannot live up to a commitment.

Daniel, just a heads up, very little progress will be made on the car today, due to a long night at the shop and a very long few weeks, I have given all our mechanics off today for their much appreciated hard work and well deserved 'vocation'.
