I need more power for my truck since putting my sub/amp in. I have an 06 Dodge ram with the Hemi if it matters. Anyone know a local place that I can have the stock alt upgraded? I am still wanting to add more stuff so I definitely need quite a bit more powerful alternator. Thanks for any help. And I searched all of TR already.

dayum, what are you pushing that you need an alternator upgrade??? it's a brand new truck, I would think the alt would work fine. Perhaps you need a capacitor instead?

Big 3 FTW :)

But how much power you running where you need a new alt. My new set up will be ~5000watts and I still have stock alt.

you cant run 5000watts off the stock alt... unless its Pyle watts

Besco, on Waters in Tampa. Never been there myself, but I have a couple of customers who swear by them. Not sure they can help you, but its worth a try.

As for how much power can you have before you run an upgraded alternator...it depends on many things, like how loud you listen, how often, if you have extra batteries and how many, efficiency of the amps, etc.

For general listening, i.e. not blasting it all the time, a general rule of thumb is that your current requirement should not exceed 2-4 times you alternator rating. I think your Dodge has a 160 amp alternator, so until you get over 300 amps of current demand, you don't need an upgraded alternator. Even at 50% efficeincy, 300 amps is 1800 watts RMS.

As 727kid said, the big 3 (upgrading factory wiring from alternator to battery, battery to ground, and engine to ground) is a great idea, regardless of how big your system is.

It depends on what he means by 'run' the system. If the 5000 watts only show up for occasional burps, and the majority of the time he is at normal listening levels, it shouldn't be a problem. Its probably ok for blasting a couple songs here and there. Add a couple extra batteries, and you could go much higher than 5000.

Now, if someone intends to drive around with the volume up all the time, this will be trouble.

Yeah i'm pretty sure he meant thats the max he can achieve in one burp.

as far as i know he has extra batts.

727, i'd like to meet you next week, sound like an interesting character and a nice car.

Yeah I know I can't ride around all the time with it at full tilt, I will be getting an Iraggi eventually. But of course until then I have enough power for showing off at full tilt and what not, look at the sig :).

I'll go to the next meet if I can get the car done by then, I am still awaiting my subs (should of been here yesterday :( ). And I'm waiting on Jon @ Epic Center to build me a box. Who knows though maybe I'll go up there with the TIs in.

PS: Those Sundowns will be ~68% efficiency @ seeing .5 per amp, which is ~218 amps on music @ 12.8.

BTW, I have been reccomended Bestco, but I wouldn't dare with their prices. I called them and they told me $300 to bump up to a 200amp alt. I would imagine the idle on it is weak as hell too. I'd rather buy an Iraggi 200/175 for that price.

I've met him...seems like a decent guy.

And he's dedicated to bump. I got a stripped screw out of his amp for him not too long ago. It was pouring down rain outside, but he had to have his 'bump' back for the ride to St. Pete. He was sitting in my showroom, waiting for the rain to let up when I went in the garage for a couple minutes. I came back in, and he was gone. Car was still here, but no 727. I don't see him in the car, and I'm wondering where he went. About 5 minutes later, the trunk on his car pops, and out he comes. He had been in there wiring up the amp :-)

As for Dominic Iraggi, I've heard good things about his alternators. But Besco has a couple of advantages, in my book. One, they are local, and two, they offer a 2 year warranty standard, I believe.

I'm looking at Iraggi's Ebay store, and most of his 200 amp seem to be 125 at idle. His 'dominator' series are in the $230 range, and his 'amputator' series (great name...keep fingers clear) are in the high $3's. It also looks like he gives a 30 day warranty, or you can buy extended warranties. So, unless you are getting a deal, I'm not sure you are getting any more than you would from Besco.

I have no direct relationship with either...just my opinion.

LOL man I was soaking wet when I got back in the car, but thats a far drive without music :(.

But anyways on the Alt subject, I will be doing much more research when the time comes. I like the Amputators idle, which is at 175 for the 200 amp. Still don't know why a lower output has a higher idle, I'd love a 300/175.

nice. I feel exactly the same way.

I had beeeggged dalton to help me just put all my crap in my car just nice and fast so the next day my business trip to ft myers wouldn't be slow and painful.
Came through and got more done than i expected!

I remember when i got my first sub and amp and i had a bad fever, the flu. 101.5 temp (i was starting to get better) and i decided to walk out in the cold, no one else was home to help and stuff that huge ass box into my car and to wire it up to the batt i took apart my quarter panel and stuffed the cable through the weirdest places to get it in the car.

After that i was done and i was happier than a clam.

Hopefully my car will be un-broken so we can all marvel at how little a difference my new subs, batt, and alt will make.... /pessimism.

I am running ~1000rms for my sub and 200-300rms for highs. The stock alternator is rated at 130amps. When it was comepletely stock the lights would dim when I rolled the windows down so the alternator is pretty weak. I want to put a second battery in but its another load on a weak electrical system. So I just want to see about a bigger alternator first. I will try Besco out, thanks.

Yea that sounds like just a bad alt. Do your big 3 when you do a new alt.
