Does anyone have the "magical setting" for (2) JL 12w6 in a sealed dual hatchback box. The amp is a JL 500/1. I have been playing around with my amp lately and cant get the right sound. Im just not happy with the way it sounds through different levels of bass. The lower notes just dont seem to get low. I must admit this is my first time with real quality equipment and I just dont quite understand all the settings on the amp. I have read through the book online for the amp and I am still kinda lost. Maybe its just me, the box, or my ears....IDK
If you have any suggestions or the same setup with the right settings your help will be greatly appreciated.

Turn off the Bass EQ (the shyt with the Q, center FQ and the BassBoost)!! That throws off a lot of bass.

-Are you sure the wiring is correct to the correct OHMS?
-Maybe build a ported box?
-Get a bigger amp? 500 watts seems too little. I read guys using 1000 and 1200 watt amps

You really need 4-500w per sub. What size box is it?

i agree with BumpinExpo, i think the amp is alittle to small to be pushing those subs, get a 1000/1 and turn it down and i think you should be alright, my friend has these same subs on a 1000/1 and he just turned down the amp, he put 143.2 or something like that on a meter if i remember correctly

You don't even need to turn the amp down. The 12w6's will easily handle 500w a piece.

i thought the slash series amps were all regulated power? why would it matter what impedance he had it wired to?

Sealed boxes dont hit low.
and JL amps are regulated but different ohm load will present different resonant frequencies and dampening loads and in turn will affect frequency response.

I know the amp is half the size but I dont even have the gain turned up all the way and it is loud enough for me. It just seems that the transitions between notes isnt clear and crisp sounding. Maybe its just me IDK.

transition notes require the most power - hearing a 120hz tone while a constant 45hz tone is being reproduced will require not only the massive power to throw the cone forward and backwards at 45hz but also even more power to accurately resonate the cone at 120hz during the 45hz stroke.
playing 30-150hz will use lot more power than playing an isolated band of low notes such as 30 to 75hz. Also, since a subwoofer cone is so much larger than your midrange speakers, it takes longer for it to move, albeit a very small difference, it is enough to perceive "muddiness" if you don't have the crossovers on the mids set high enough that they do not reproduce low sounds.
Either way you may want to experiment with turning the crossover frequency to a lower or higher point point in combination with the mids to find the accurate reproduction limits of your setup.

I just thought of something: would the size of the power wire to the amp have anything to do with it?

probably not nless the wire is liek 18ga!

Ofcourse it could. If the wire is 10 gauge or possibly even 8 gauge, your amp could be producing even less power than you think, even further underpowering the subs. You really need to get decent power to the subs to get them to perform to their full potential. Tuning your system (deck and amp) will do wonders as well. Every variable counts...from wiring, to box, to tuning...and it all adds up.

The reason I asked that is because I have an 8 gauge and I definatly(sp) think it is to small. When I bought the truck it already had everything hooked up, so I just threw in the amp and subs and was all set. I need to quit being lazy and put in a 4 gauge wire.
Things were so much easier two years ago when I owned my last system and was using kicker =) Im glad I stepped up a notch though. The sound quality is def. noticable between my old kicker setup and the JL stuff I have now. Just gotta learn the little stuff to go along with it.

Did you try what I said? Because it worked for me.

No, not yet, havent got around to it. Also I am tossing around the idea of getting a 10w7, found one for a good price.

Lol, just go in the trunk and turn off the Bass EQ option on the amp, takes 5 seconds ;).
