View Full Version : My Mini build...

Well I wanted to document my Mini build, and where better to put it than here in the shop forum from the shop doing the work.

Here is what she looked like before I pulled her apart: (more pics at site linked in image)
http://www.daytonaminis.com/ocala2/galeries/02classics/DSC05283.jpg (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2083524)

She has her front end off right now, the motor is mostly out (I will need a car lift to finish with the shift linkage).

I hope to have more pics and details added as things firm up, but the original plan is as follows:

Long Ratio Final Drive Gear Set (http://www.minimania.com/web/Item/MT30500/AddedFrom/search/InvDetail.cfm)
Honda B16 Type R ( I think)
Fully Adjustable Rear Suspension Package
Wide Wheel Fender Flares (http://www.superfastminis.com/wide_wheel_fender_flares.htm)
Limited Slip Differential ( if not included in the engine)
Mini Tec Superbrake Kit (http://www.superfastminis.com/mini_tec_superbrake_kit1.htm)
Flip front (http://www.superfastminis.com/FLIPFRONTENDKIT.htm)
Fully adjustable front end alignment (http://www.superfastminis.com/fully_adjustable_lower_arms.htm)

More details and pictures to follow.

The motor is ALMOST ready to come out here.

Got my wheels and tires today.

And tires

http://www.yokohama.com.au/media/b_a539.227.jpg (http://www.yokohama.com.au/ourtyres/tyre.aspx?tyreid=67)

Order has been placed for all the parts minus the LSD and final drive gearset.

The motor is still being hunted for, so we may end up changing which one we use. Who knows.

b16b, but who`s counting. Those wheels are hot. They would look good on my 510. I love the front license plate also.

Xanthus

We are going to have to fabricate something for the front plate on the new one. Ought not to be hard, I figure I have a good idea how to do it, I will run it by you in case you have a better plan.

Wow!...

Xanthus
01-22-2007, 07:04 PM
Motor fits, WOOT, minor issues with mounts, such is to be expected. Not a fast start, but I'd rather take the deliberate approach and get the thing done right the first time.

Oh, and in typical Mini fassion the axle nuts sent to us were both different sizes.

Happy to have the axles from the motor as the axles from Mini Tec do not come with pot joints. All the boots were in great shape, the one I saw taken off today did not suffer any damage, and the grease was all consistant, no lumps and junk so I am confident that there is no damage in the pot joints.

Lots more to do, but the guys seem to have a general plan in order, and the Mini Tec instal book seems to answer most questions. I have to say they put together a good kit, and as well done manual to go with it.

Now I wonder when I will ever see the exhaust they backordered on me....

Xanthus

Exhaust and last bit to the rear suspension ought to ship tomorrow.

The rest is coming together nicely.

Hope to have some pics available soon.

ok, well the engine harness is on and the body harness is out. Lance decided it was time to get rid of all the Lucas wiring, so the front half of the body harness is out and the Painless wiring universal harness is going in.

Xanthus
01-27-2007, 04:19 PM
Yeah, I will likely redo the back end on my own time later. It's not NEARLY as hard as it's just fuel sender and lights.

After this the beastie will be sound AND fast...

Well with all the wiring going on I can`t say that I`m not excited that the car turned over with the key yesterday and had spark. Fuel lines arn`t hooked up yet but maybe today we can make her run. Stinky is almost done with the wiring, engine and chassis. Then we pull the motor, pretty everything up and send the chassis to the body shop. woo hoo!

I am totally pleased with Kyle and Brents work. I only have issues with the crap bonnet that we have used. I will likely be switching to my old metal bonnet stretched the additional 4" sometime in the future unless I can get a good deal on a higher quality fiberglass bonnet.

Just got a supurb alignment done at Cars & Concepts. She is pulling less now, but we will see if we cannot modify that further and see if it can be further lesened.

Will be in on Monday to complete the project.

Dash going in on Monday, and the stripes on Wednesday.

She will be done for the most part then.

I ought to have had my dash fabricated in house (as in by "Stinky"). The one I ordered don't fit right, the doors fell off it, and the mounting hardware was just wack.

The guys are making the best of it though. Minor delays on the finish date, but as usual they are really coming together to get it done right for me.

Of the list of annoyances in this project, I have to say the first and best thing I did right was bring it to Ellis Autoworkz. Hell I think they will likely be reworking the next Mini I do that I won't even be doing an engine swap for.

She is home, V-Tec is now engaging(it was not previously) I have the dash in, the bonnet sorted, and generally everything as per this project is done.
Issues still to be resolved:
Ride height adjustment or suspension adjustment needed to stop left rear wheel from rubbing if I have a back seat passenger.
Need replacement stereo speaker.
Need to fix the headliner.
Need to figure out exactly how to handle the glove box areas as the inside of them are not done.
Have to order the correct speedo if it ever is in stock at Jeggs.

Thanks for the feedback.

Just have to thank Kyle and Bryant. She rides SMOOTH now, the bonnet now being sorted has made her real quiet.

I love the work they did, and the body work they had done for me.

These guys really stepped into a big mess with my Mini and came out doing a fantastic job. I highly recommend them for anyone looking to handle any motor swap. If you can get a new Honda motor to work in a 1976 Mini you can handle just about anything.

I am sure there are other good Tampa shops, but for me this is the place to be. I sent them a project that most were too frightened to handle, and now I have a fabulous little Mini that runs like a bat out of hell.

Hope to see you all soon.

search youtube for "ellis autoworkz" there is one of me driving it for the first time. You should be able to see it running laps at the BMW auto x`s in the future as Lance just sold it to another Mini nut, and she helps put on the BMW auto X every month.
