Default Whats a good mechanic hourly rate?

Whats a good mechanic hourly rate? I need to get a 1 hour job done to change some pcv rings to stop an oil leak in my wife's mini-van (1998 Mazda MPV). Just wondering what the typical hour rate is local. This is my first time not using a dealership (because never owned a car without warranty).

Parts came out to $33.00. Dealer wanted $350 for the job, for some other guy on the mpvclub.com forum.

Or if you are a mechanic around Holiday / New Port Richey send me a PM. I see a lot of shops around my house, just too busy to go in and check until the weekend.

A job that requires specific car knowledge $80hr. PCV valves on an mpv about $50-$60hr. Dealer will never charge for one hour, they will rate you for at least three hours, sons-of-bitches.

Most shops are around $60/hr, dealerships are $80+/hr. Unless you do an under-the-table/side job arrangement, you will be charged "book time", a pre-determined amount of time that the job should take. It may be a 1 hr job in your mind, but may "book" out to be 3 hrs. Thats how mechanics make money, the faster they are, the more they make.

i have never heard of a dealership being around 80 an hour. Ive worked in 4 and the average is 125 an hour. Ask if you can see a copy of what is called the labor rate guide. It is a book that lists repair times and there difficulty.

Our dealership uses a progressive labor rate. The more flat rate hours the job pays, the higher the labor rate goes.

Greedy dealerships, you'd think it would be the other way around. Oh well the bosses will just keep wondering where all the business has been going.

Wanna hear something? I told my wife to get an oil change done as a precaution cause I didn't know what was up (been working plenty overtime) and have no time to handle this now. I know I need to get it done because the oil leak can mess up the starter for some reason, I've read.

Well anyway wife goes to TiresPlus by our house for quick oil change. She must have asked the guy there if they would install the rings. He told her no mechanic would install it on a hourly pay if we already bought the parts from the auto store. What shit do they tell women?!? Maybe they won't do it... but I'm sure one of those mechanics around me near Grand and SR54 (a lot) would.

60-70/hr is what most private shops will run you. IF you supply the parts a lot charge around 80+/hr.
