Worthy of note: This event is at SPC, so pre-registration is NOT required. We do have a 60-car limit, though. So, be sure you're there by around 8:30 if you're not pre-registered. (and by 9:00 if you are!)

Yeah, Curbjacker, come on down!

Being a first-timer can be a little intimdating for some, but it's a piece of cake. We can pair you up with someone with some experience to walk the course, while you take your turn working the course, and we can arrange a ride along for a few runs so you can get a few pointers, if you'd like.

If you have any specific questions before hand, feel free to post 'em here.

Just registered online. So I have to be there by 9:00 a.m.? Is that correct?

What time do your events normally end?

Loren
11-26-2006, 07:08 PM
Registration closes around 9:30, so don't be late. We usually try to have a driver's meeting around 10:00 and get things rolling by 10:30. Depending on how many people show up, we'll get done anywhere between 2:30 and 4:30.

I do have 1 question. i have a Welded differential. is that ok to use in AutoX? or should i toss in my Open diff?

I think the turns in autox are usually too tight for a welded diff, and I have heard of them breaking their welds in that environment. Also, SPC is sealed asphalt. Pretty slick stuff. I expect a welded diff would probably slide all over the place trying to turn on that surface.

So... yeah, if you have another diff you can put in, that might be wise.

I just emailed Mr Rasp to get registered for this one. I'm looking forward to seeing what the autocrosses in St Pete are like. I've never been to one. Is the surface as slick as Zephyrhills?

Loren
11-27-2006, 12:39 AM
It's slick in a different way. ZHills is powdery, kinda sandy. Really strange surface. SPC is just really smooth sealed asphalt. Probably not as slick as ZHills... unless it rains.

I'm a NASA member, that's about the only hookup I have! I've not been to a NASA track event because my car doesn't meet their safety standards. (the roll bar isn't up to spec)

Hey Rosko,
Good to see I won't be the only first timer at this site.
That's quite a drive for you.
Not much going on in December, so I signed up for it.
I'm a little unhappy to hear it is slippery,
but they say it's good to get experiance on all types of surfaces.

You should get plenty of opportunities to spin out!!! :D

I feel you pain, though. I will be there on street tires, displaying my mad drift skillz, since my race tires are corded. :)

Well, we had a great day! 7 runs, nice weather, good fun.

But, man, I forgot how slick SPC is compared to Brooksville - I'm gonna have to take back my "+1" from earlier in the thread. It takes a smooth throttle and much slower in turns to get through quickly - still, a great site, and no complaints.

See you Jan. 13th!

It was my first time there and I had a good time,
but boy oh boy was it slippery.
The first time my boost hit, the back end kicked out and surprised the heck out of me.
Another driver mentioned, and I agree, that it makes you appreciate Brooksville.
It's good to mix it up though. I'll go again.

just keep an eye on the board here, and we'll definitely post a link when reg. opens for Jan 13th. Of course, as has been said, at SPC you can just show up, but be early...

the rest of the schedule for '07 is on the schedule sticky here, so mark your calendars, save your dimes and call in sick if you have to!

I think you are referring to me?

I did do an event once, and I remember you being there. It was down at SPC, I think back earlier this year. I distictly remember you because you were one of the only other "younger guys" (I'm 20) out there with me.

I tend to surprise some people with what I can do with this car, haha. I still have so much to learn though.just wish I had more time/money for events. Mostly time, though.

Next time I'm out there and you see me, come over and say hi. my name is geno.

Autox photog tips:
(I think you're doing some of this already, these are just general tips)

Capture action. If there is no action (body roll, front wheels turned, cones flying, tires smoking, SOMETHING), then you might as well be taking photos of a car show.

Focus, zoom and frame. Blurry photos suck, and you need to be zoomed in enough to see the car clearly. But, you usually still need to capture some background... rows of cones, apex cones with pointers, something to give those who know what they're looking at some visual reference as to what's going on in the shot. (eye candy for those who don't know what they're looking at)

You can catch action in people's faces, too. Watch for newb drivers and especially newb ride-alongs, sometimes their expressions are priceless. And a lot of drivers get "race face" (akin to "rock & roll face" that guitarists get, but not as bad as "bitter beer face"), it can make for some good photos, too.

To get the really good shots, you have to take a lot of crap. I never have had the patience to do this... but, snap, snap, snap. Most of what you get will be crap... though I've seen really good photographers who's "crap" is still better than the average person's "good" photos just because it's clearly focused and well-framed.

Obviously, these are non-technical tips. I'm not a photographer, just a guy who's been around autox for a while and seen a lot of good and bad photography.
