holy fucking search.
vlsd = good when it wants to be. yeehaw and relatively cheap.
welded = good when you need it to be. possible grenade action which is cool and gets chicks.
either way you will drift better and love your car much more with either.

VLSD = don't always like you.
WELDED = 100% locking alll the time. You catch lots of attention at gas station.

if you are looking to be road racing, drifting, drag, and daily driving, you should go with a vlsd or a 1.5 way diff, it allows your car to handle better in turns, welded is bad ass too, i have a s14 with lsd and have a s13 with welded diff. but i like the vlsd better because i like grip racing also. i recommend you should keep it open and practice shifting the weight of your car to get the car to slide, you can drift very good with open. and when you get good then go to the next step.

^I've been pondering welded diff but scared i'll kill myself as a daily driver getting on it on the highway. :X scarryyy
probably go vlsd tho

from personal experience, welded is extremely easy to get the back end out, and seems very controlable. I will say there are some definate practicality issues with it though. small radius turns, at low speeds not sliding are annoying, all you hear is chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp and you get mean looks from old ladies at the grocery stores. also, god forbid you ever have to push your car off the road or any where that requires turning the car, the turning portions IS A BITCH!!!!!!!
with that said, if you are hardcore and dont give a fuck, weld it
if you want sanity in everyday driving and drifting is not something you do ALL the time and is not the sole purpose of your car, I would vote VLSD, i know thats the route im taking on my convertible....

well im guessing everybody likes the welded diff.
If you do alot of drifting then get the welded diff but for DD for sure get a VLSD.

Welded Controlable?!?!?!? :lol: You've obviously never driven in FL during the summer with a welded diff. Sparatic rain showers, hot slick roads, and a welded diff. Wow. NOT Fun. Get a 2 way or a 1.5. Save the money do it right.
Daily driving on a welded diff sucks ass.

just weld your diff and dont drive in the rain unless you have to cuz i have a welded diff and i cant even downshift to slow down to a light without shift locking on accident

some additional info:
welded diffs are a bitch in tight turning situations.
VLSDs work when the diff oil is at the correct operating temp.

weld diff and breaking down = sux....if you like pushing in straight lines then having to hold the car from rolling while your buddy turns the wheel slightly then get it on your DD...

i've never broken down with a welded, nor spun out in the rain on the highway, nor lost control, nor shift locked while downshifting.
i donno, i found it tolerable in an sr 240 with no powersteering. yeah, it wasnt that most fun ive had daily driving...but it was so easy to get the rear out.
if you're on a budget, go welded. if you've got money, go 2 way.
edit: what i didnt like about welded, though, was the fact that (like marksaccord said) if i wanted to do a quick u-turn, id end up sliding the rear out with traffic close behind me

welded are for pussies. real men drift open diff. i say if your just starting then get a vlsd. it will teach you better. welded = drift button. and you don't get any better at somthing by making it easy.
welded= advanced
vlsd= beginner

The welded rear in my starion is great. I got the 6 puck unsprung clutch combined with the diff, lol if i dont give it enough gas from a stop it shakes the whole dam car apart though. Awesome for sideways though.

If you're hardcore and don't mind replacing tires more often, chirping around corners, and changing your driving habits in the rain then go welded. Make sure it's welded thoroughly.
VLSD worked just fine for me. Much more predictable than open and easy on tires. I liked to keep that car classy, so chirping on turns was a no go.
