Shooting fire out of strange places....
I'm not sure what is causing it, but for some strange reason, I'm shoot fire out of my exhaust ports.
I've got a 92 Ka24de
The valve cover gasket that keeps oil out of the spark plugs went bad. so we replaced that and went to start the car and it would not run. it was just turning over. then it started to make strange banging sounds. sounded like a clogged up cat. so we tryed to take the cat off, but the nuts and bolts were too rusted, so we just took the headers off to see if we could even get it to run. Thats when we discovered the flames. They are only about 8-10 inches long. It doesn't flame every time, it takes a few rotations before it shoots fire. on the flameless rotations, you can see an abnormally large amount of gas/black smoke out of the exhaust ports. Also on occation, it shoots up through the intake. We heard it bang through the intake, so we carefully held it so we could see in it, and there is definatly fire in the intake.
What could be causing this?
So far we have been told...
no spark,
bad injectors
cam timing is off
dist. timing is off
the ecu is messing up the dist timing trying to over compensate for something
the car was running rich due to lack of emissions. I hadn't had the oppurtunity to get the ecu remapped for the different ratios. so the ecu was trying to compensate for the richness. could it be that the ecu is just over doing it?
This is pasted my knowledge.
thanks for the help

could be a combination of mentioned things... it runs rich cause there are no emissions ( so does mine ) and your timing is probly off. the ecu wont over compensate enuff to make fire... i dont think... mine doesn't lol... try resetting the timing... cant hurt... did u take the emissions off when you did the gasket??? if not then u need to allow the ecu to reset anyways.. which i suppose could be the problem... try unplugging your batt. cable for around 15 min.... to make sure it resets itself.... then try.. but try timing first...

the emissions were done along time ago. because i've got electric fans that I''ve not had the time to wire properly, you have to disconnect the battery every time you turn the car off to stop the fan. so the ecu should reset every time. the timing seems to be right. i know the ecu advances or retards to compensate for the richness. i didn't think it would mess up that bad though.
i checked the timing with a light and its correct.
i redid the dist. timing according to factory service manual.
I agree, I do have fuel because I can see it coming out of the exhaust ports when it isn't shooting fire. I'm not so sure about the spark though because it doens't flame everytime.
could it be that i'm not getting enough good spark to ignite the fuel and it is just building up and detonating?
I know that a detonation is when the compression blows the fuel up without the spark. i'm not sure when exactly that detonation happens, so i'm not sure if the values are supposed to be open with that happens or not...

It shoots flames, so it does have fuel and spark.
A cold motor will not preignite.
All you did was remove the valve cover, correct?
Check the firing order. You probably just have the wires mixed up.
