Have Kicker L7 10" in a vented box running off of kicker 600.1 at 2 Ohm final indep. Speaker is dual 4 ohm. With gain at 1/3 and some continuous bass I start smelling this weird smell, not very strong, but noticable. Speaker as well as amp is about 1 1/2 weeks old, and I am thinking that maybe it is part of break in process. On the other hand, what if it's coils that are being damaged. Amp is rated at 600 RMS at 2, and speaker has 600 rms handling at 2. Any ideas what that smell might be?

a small doesnt say much - you shouldnt smell anything while the sub is running. You might smell something while its breaking in but a week and a half of dailey driving is well out of the break in period.

Regardless of what the amp gain is set to, it is still possible to overdrive it if you crank the headunit up loud enough. I would turn the gain down even more or lay off the volume control on the deck.

If it is still in the break in period and this is the first time you have played continuous bass you might just be smelling the glue the boc is made of or the 'new plastic' smell from the sub blowing out the vent. If thats the case it will go away quickly. If it smells like burnt plastic though you are burning the coil into the waxed aluminum and you will sieze the sub if it continues.

drop an air freshener into the port =P

Could also depend on where you got the sub from. I remember buying a speaker set off a cheap-car-electronics site and the speakers smelled REALLY funky and had my car smelling like that every time they played for a week.... not as long as yours... but then again my sense of smell gets accustomed to things rather quickly. Anyways.. It'd be a good idea to pull the box, take it apart and see if maybe you got a styrofoam peanut wedged in the coil? :crack: haha good luck man

I noticed that I only smell it during songs like "late night tip" etc that has that continuous sub movement. Just ran it with tippin' all the way up and absolutely no smell. Tippin has that short tight thump so I am thinking it has something to do with the temperature. When bass is continuous it creates high temp, if I'm not mistaken, but if it's tight thump it doesn't have enough time to get hot. Hmmm.. I put the back seats down so that way it has more ventilation... With no freaking dynamat rattles like a bitch though.
Thanks for your responses, if anyone else can come up with anything, feel free to post, all opinions are appreciated.
I went to a local audio shop off of 60, and they just told me kicker can't handle power worth shit, and that jl audio that THEY ARE SELLING is sooooo much better. JL is good, but kicker is legendary, bastards.

kicker does suck, and Ive seen four blown L7s in the last month, wanna wager on how many JL w3s ive replaced?

Buts thats irrelevent. If you are heating it up with continous bas you are overpowering it and it WILL eventually sieze if you continue run it in whatever conditions are making the smell.

Box Size May Be Incorrect - Or Port -
Letting The Sub Become Unstable And Allowing The Amp To Dc - Therefore Heating Up The Sub - Who Made The Box - Is It To Spec Of The Sub?

Well, a smell coming from a subwoofer could be one of two things....the sub is breaking in (first time it's components have really heated up) or it's the voice coil overheating (which is a precursor to the sub blowing). Do you notice it when you only play it real loud...or all the time?

Loud continuous bass..hoping that's because it's breaking in...smells less as days go by..
