do i shitcan my current alpine head unit and step up to the pioneer deh-p7800mp, for it's 16 band eq and 5v pre-outs... or do i save up a little bit more money, keep the alpine, and spring for an audiocontrol eq/line driver/xover a la the dqx (which would also leave plenty of headroom to later upgrade amps and feed them a healthy 7ish volt signal)?
i think my system (or just my love of increasingly expensive shit) has outgrown the 2 band parametric eq and 2v preouts i've got now.

I've had real good experiences with AudioControl's products, then again I'd take a Pioneer deck over an Alpine most anyday. Tough call. I'd probably just go with the Pioneer deck though...keep it all in one and simple.

16 bands vs. 30... 5v vs. 7+... freakin sweet full color display vs. alpine simplicity... expensive vs. really damn expensive... fuck.

I'm a huge audio control fan, but I'd probably just go with the pioneer unit. I haven't really liked the Alpine heads since the old 7909.
I went AudioControl, but I went with the DQS...6 channels, 30 bands per channel plus 2 parametrics per channel...total of 198 bands! What's interesting, though, is how little I am using of it...with my 5.1 system, I had to have 6 channels, so I didn't have lots of options. I have a couple freq's tweaked a little, but nothing big. In my opinion, if any freqency needs more than about 3 db of boost or cut, you've got a design problem. Since 3db of boost will essentially make your amp double the output at that frequency, you can run in to trouble, especially in the lower frequencies. If you need more bass, buy more bass, don't just crank the eq. Since cuts decrease output, you can be a little more liberal with those, but big cuts on an eq are still just bandaids.
Further, unless you are going to compete, and RTA score is important, you probably don't need more than a 1 octave eq. With a well designed system, 3-5 bands is usually enough, I especially like 3 band parametrics.

For what we pay for that pioneer just get that. Its got a 16 band eq on it and that should be more than enough. I like it and if I was to get a new cd player that would prob be the one i would get, especiallly cause what you get for the price.
