wut do u guys think about a 240sx for autox cuz im gettin out of the whole street racing thing
240's are good cars. Don't be a pussy.
Registration is still open for a couple days for the NASA event. https://www.nasaproracing.com/nasa_event/show/?event_id=404
And after that you have the PCA event on the 27th in Zephyrhills.

they're only good for drifting but anything will work at autox & it's much safer than street racing plus it teaches you to be a better driver.

lol, it's competitive in every class it goes to. STS, SM, GS, DSP, etc.

comparatively speaking my car is terrible for autocross but I still have had a lot of fun at the two events I've gone to :)
get out, have fun, then decide what you want to do.
just based on what I have seen and heard, miatas are pretty damn good (cheap as hell to boot) as is the s2000.

since a Miata, S2000, Mini, etc will spank the shit out of it
I'm speaking of the E46 M3 here btw. The E36 M3 is a better autocross car -- at the least it is 200lbs+ lighter than the 3400lb E46. The only thing the E46 has over it is looks (imo!) and a more powerful motor.

With a good alignment and good tires, a well driven e46 M3 could beat those cars at the autox. :D

I can see it doing a lot better if you pull off the typical weight saving mods which can get it in the 3200lb range (sunroof delete which you will rarely see but worth 45lbs, rear seat removal, racing seats, trunk liner removal, lightweight battery, lightweight wheels, mabye some others im missing, probably some CF parts), suspension upgrade, r compounds....but in stock form it just seems too heavy. I havent seen any of us e46 m3's pull off times at any of the recent autocrosses that were really close to the faster cars. Not that there have been many, but I know Penny+Carlos have had r comp tires on their e46 m3 and fitzuni (steel grey, smg) has a pretty good suspension setup but hasn't run r compound tires yet.
Even getting the E46 M3 down to 3200lbs, isnt that still like 1000lbs heavier than a Miata? Of course my car has a decent amount of HP, but the last two autocross events havent seemed very HP-favorable. I know I'm new but you fuckers in your lighter cars can really whip around cones -- I think my car would need at least the forementioned mods + more skill on my part to be able to pull that off ;)

I don't like to be blunt, but there isn't anyone driving a M3 around here who can take it anywhere near its limits. It's an A Stock car. It's in that class because its effing fast.
The number of people that go to our typical Brooksville autocrosses who can drive any particular car to its limit can probably be counted on one hand. At the next SCCA (not BMW or Porsche Club) autocross you attend, go to the tent, and ask who the best driver is in attendance (sure to generate an argument :) ). Ask that driver if he'll drive your car. He won't beat you by tenths... He'll beat you by SECONDS.
Most of us, at our little regional level, are not competing with other cars. We compete against drivers. In other words, I think Keith R. could smoke ALMOST everybody reading this post in my wife's Altima.
To the original poster: This should be obvious, but my reasoning applies to the 240 as well as the M3 as well as any other car you could think up.

I agree, put danny shields in a dodge caravan and he will blow the doors off of me in my 240

Unrelated: How would you find out what class to register for?
I wouldnt mind seeing how my homegrown skills compare to people with way more tracktime than I.

If you've never tried it, you'll be in the "novice" class for your first few events, regardless of car/mods.
To see what class your car goes in, take a look at the '06 Solo Rulebook (http://scca.org/Solo/Index.asp?IdS=05F52D-8B87450&x=050|070&~=).

Appreciated, back on topic.
i think with certain mods the 240 can be competitive, but all in all it comes down to driver skill....
I am more then likely going to start hitting up a couple events..

This link J-Rho's STS 240 buildup (lots o' pics) - FreshAlloy.com Forums (http://forums.freshalloy.com/showthread.php?t=139581) will give you an idea of how to make a nationally competitive s13. You need not go to such extremes to make a quick car for local events, however. :D

yeah, 240 is a great platform for auto-x,
rwd, plenty of power, plenty of great suspension options available
but as mentioned, its ALL about driver skill
but hey, i go out and race my shitbox FWD prelude (see sig) and have a blast, i think i'm a pretty good driver for the amount of seat time. but its just about havin fun, good luck

Not for this weekend. I thought the nasa event was on the 18th? Maybe I'm mistaken.
NASA is on the 12th. Registration probably closes tonight or tomorrow.
