Anyone got any specs on this????
I picked it up at a car show/swap meet a few months ago for $20:D. I just figured it was a small PPI amp, and i might use it to run highs or something. Actually I had no idea what i would use it for, but for 20$ figured I could let it sit until a need arose..
Anyhow, I was trying to find some official info on it yesterday and all Ifound was a link on PPIs website of old MSRPs showing that it retailed for $499 new!!:-o
So I guess this is some kind of old high current amp like an Orion 225HCCA. Anyone have the power output specs for it and its load capabilities?

Sooner or later I gotta hook it up and see if it works too..hehe.

A quick google came up with this

50 x 2 4ohm
200 x 1 4ohm
100 x 2 2ohm
400 x 1 2ohm
200 x 2 1ohm
not stable at 1ohm x 1

Thanks man, but thats why I am not using google. I KNOW that aint right, it says right on the sink that its 25x2@4ohms. I can find the wrong info easily :D

Nah, havent tried it yet, but even if its dead its probably still worth fixin..

umm go to radio shack and buy a couple 1ohm coils and meter it yourself. If you know thats what the heatsink says why are you asking what the specs are :roll:

First off, you don't want coils, you want non-inductive resistors. Second, I doubt radio shack is going to have 200 watt, 1 ohm, non inductive resistors.

I kind of remember this amp being designed to compete with the 225 HCCA. A little know fact, but back in the day, Orion made all the PPI amps. I actually saw some going down the orion line when I was out there for Iasca finals in 91. So, I'd guess its the same amp. This is how the old HCCA's broke down:

25x2 @4 ohm
50x2 @2ohm
100x2 @1 ohm
200x2 @1/2 ohm
400x1 @ 1 ohm mono

It was one serious little amp, back in the day. I used to run two of them. One to 6 12's and the other to my front stage in an 88 blazer. Then, 6 8's and a front stage in a 91 camaro.

Try over at carsound.com...there are a bunch of 'old timers' over there who probably remember better than I do.

Hopefully, it works. I saw lots of high current amps get blown. They were so 'maxed out' at 1/2 ohm, that they died easy if the voltage dropped.

It Ran A Little Hot At 1 Ohm - Would Not Go Und 2 - But It Has Get Sound Quality

First off, you don't want coils, you want non-inductive resistors. Second, I doubt radio shack is going to have 200 watt, 1 ohm, non inductive resistors.

I use several 50 watt 2ohm coils in whatever configuration I need. Sit them in distilled water and you have a giant peak current window for the few seconds it would take to get a voltage measurement. :roll:

Ive also used 300ft spools of wire which meter out to similar DC resistances. :D

But the inductance of the coil will have an effect on the impedance, which is what the amp actually sees, since its AC. So, just because it measures xx ohms resistance on your meter, doesn't mean thats the impedance the amp sees. This would make any calculation suspect, potentially highly suspect.

Spools of wire would have the same issue. Again, DC resistance is not what you are looking to hold constant. Impedance is. Technically, you could unroll the spool of wire, and make one straight run, that would take the inductance out of it, but it would make hook up much more difficult :lol:

A purely resistive load, like from a non inductive resistor, is the only easy way to measure amp power with just a volt meter, and have any degree of accuracy.

inductance will change the actual AC impedance of the coil by 15% at the most. Its an excellent way to bench two amps side by side and also give you a rough figure for power output. Not perfect but very more real than paper ratings.
