should i go with a 225/46/16 hankook rs2 z212($88/tire at edgeracing) or 215/45/16 hankook($85/tire) or a 215/45/16 azenis rt-615 ($98/tire)?
they're going on an sts subaru 2.5rs. for the past few years i've been using 215/45/16 azenis rt-215's. reportedly the kook's have a softer sidewall but slightly higher lateral grip.

Where's the option for Bridgestone RE92's taken off a Camry?

I found the Kooks to be a more comfortable tire, but the Azenis are definitely more grippy. Kooks really suck for straight-line traction... compared to how well they corner.
For $10, I'd stick with the Azenis.

If the big set back is staright line traction, that might not be such a loss in an AWD car like that Subaru. Of course anything I say is only hearsay, I've not yet driven on either tire. I do have a set of the Falkens in my garage waiting for the RT-215's to finally die off.

azenis..I DD on them, and they are VERY quiet and I've had no comfort problems.
This is the new generation, RT-615. I have nothing but love for these tires.

it's more like $40 ;) but you've had both & prefer the new azenis? & as nunyo said i'm not really hurting for straight line acceleration due to the awd. you're confusing me man, you say the kooks corner really well but then say the azenis are more grippy. is that more grippy in just straight stuff or also cornering? i know the kooks will be less responsive for transitions due to the softer sidewall but keep the recommendations coming :D

might as well post this up in here... i'm also lookin for tires... tire size on the rims i'm gettin from soemone has the azenis rt 215's(tire not made anymore) tire size 205/55/16... what numbers have to be the same to fit on that rim... that last 2? cause i'm in the market for a good autox tire that won't fold over

I have driven on the Azenis for many years and recently switched to the rs2. I currently have 225/45/16 rs2s and I will be switching back to Azenis when these are done. Thankfully, I am not autoxing on them, or I would be tempted to replace them sooner.

Only the last number has to be exactly the same, however all the numbers are important.

The Hankook's aren't "terrible" by any means. The difference between them and the Azenis is not at all "night and day", but it is there.
When I say the Hankook's are more comfortable than the Azenis 615's, I'm NOT saying that the Azenis is uncomfortable... just that there IS a difference.
When I say that the Hankook's have better cornering grip than they have straight line grip... and then I say that the Azenis grip better... I mean the Azenis grip better all around. The Azenis still seem to have a slight deficit in launch grip vs. cornering grip, must have something to do with the black magic of tire design.
I think what Muddy is saying, and I agree, is that for autocross purposes the Azenis is clearly a better choice. Part of it is that they have a stiffer sidewall and are more responsive. More grip plus a more controlled feel = goodness.
I've got an old set of Victoracers on the car right now... I think I may have finally been pushed over the fence. Toyo RA-1's will very likely be my next multi-purpose (street/autox/track) tire.

so 205/55/16 are on it now... 225/55/16 will fit?
mikespeed95
07-18-2006, 07:05 PM
a 225 will be 20mm wider, 10mm wider per side of the wheel. depending on how it fits on the wheel now will determine, but you could probabl put a 225 on there.
OP:
If you are looking to be nationally competitive or wanna trophy and have every competitive advantage you can, run the 615
if you are just looking to have fun and tires that will be competitive, and work very well, go with the rsII
and as always, more tire = better, so if you can fit a 225 without sidewall rollover issues, id say the 225/45r16 woudl be a winner. but the 215 azenis will stick better than a 225 rsII.

so 205/55/16 are on it now... 225/55/16 will fit?
if i were you i wouldn't go with a 225/55 as it'll increase your gearing & wrx's already have tall gears, you should get a 225/45 at the very least. you also might want to ditch the stock re92's & throw some 235/40/17's on the stockers or get another set of 17's. take a look at the options 235/40/17 (http://www.edgeracing.com/tires/2354017/)

I'm daily driving a set of RS2's also... good for DD work, but Azenis are still my favorite ST* class tire, although I haven't driven on the Yokohamas yet.

The 225 Hankooks aren't that wide. Azenis tend to run quite wide for their stated size.

ugh, a 225 will be wider than a 205 of the same tire. if you read the post in context it helps.

Not always...
Look at the 205/50/15 Azenis vs. the 215/45/16 Azenis. The 205 is wider.

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuughain....IF....and again IF you read my post IN CONTEXT...which is apparantly too hard of a request.
if your going from a 205->255 RSII you will get about 20mm of tire, 10mm per side, in reguards to fitment.
why dont you englighten me on how wide a 245 hoosier s03 is while your at it and show everyone how smart you are. im sure everyone still thinks they are actually 245mm wide instead of being an oversized tire for their rated size, just like any other competition tire :rolleyes

im not trying to do a pissing match, im just asking for people to actually have a mental capability to read posts in a thread and understand context without every post having to be written out in intricate detail becasue people are too stupid to read the post above it or being quoted.

You should get Michelin Blizzaks with Spikes. With the spikes you will pick up a theoretical increase in your coefficient of friction of the equivelant of going from a 205 to a 445. That would be sick!!!
Go with the Hancooks.

I just returned from Deal's Gap, and I must say that I am impressed with how well the hankooks (225/45/16) held up. On Sunday morning I got to run over 15 miles of the Gap, uninterrupted. The last 4 miles on the way out, then all the way back. The tires held up quite well, and I hammered them hard. They started to give up a little near the end, but what do you expect after 400+ turns? :D

Yep. :) There was one point on Saturday morning when I was running in the rain when the tail began to slip. I was accelerating with one rear tire on the painted double-yellow line. Had I lifted then, I would have been in the trees.
