driving skills

First just get out to events. As Mars said, driving skill is one of the most important things in autocross. Next is usually tires. Third woudl be suspension so that you can use the tires to their full effectiveness.

But yeah, don't worry about mods right now. Just get your ass out there and have fun!

Check out the schedule given at the top of this forum. I'm not sure if Buccaneer Region's site is listed...but if not, there's an event in Gainesville at the Test Track on the 23rd.

When you DO goto events, utilize the novice instructors as much as you can. There are no stupid questions, although we do have the right to chuckle. :)

+1 for Mars

get used to how your car handles first out there, have some fun

then if you keep going check out the rule book to see where your car sits and where the mods would take you

then just flow with your progression . for me i've been building it step by step

There's something in your original question that runs counter to all the advice you've been given. You're "not going to be doing it all the time".

I know it sounds like some of the responses are being a little flippant, and I assume that may be why you're waving the lock on this thread. But, the truth is that they are 100% correct. It doesn't much matter how well the car is set up if you don't have the skills to drive it. And, unless you've been doing some other kind of racing (not drag racing or street racing), trust me, autox driving skills did not come with you as a factory option.

Get on out to an autocross in ANY car you have that runs and is safe. Start working on your skills. You don't need to "build a car" for it unless you plan to get really serious, in which case you WILL be doing it all the time.

Hope to see you at an autocross soon, my friend.

I'd go for the interior... you need to be pimping like a baller to be fast...

+1 Have fun and rip up the course. I just got into myself so I'm definitely working on my driving skills, learning how the car really handles and being able to control it.

Another great thing to do is on your first few times out, come up to people and say "Hey, this is my first time doing this, could I ride along with you?" or, asking people to drive your car for you.

Riding along with peopel is not only fun, it gives you a great way to get a feel for the course and how to drive it.

I guess the Cobra is white trash then?

Haha. Yeah. pretty much. I'm debating yanking the carpet this winter. It's gotten soaked so many times, it's starting to smell like a bass boat.

I'm not sure anyone in here is really concerned with rep points. Come on out to an autocross, let 'em know you're new, they'll find someone for you to ride with.

If you ever see me, feel free to come up and ask for a ride. I (and I'm sure a lot of other people) wouldn't mind giving you one.

It's easy to spot me, I'll be the only Scion xA with gold wheels you'll probably see at one of these events, haha.

as previously stated, i wouldnt bother modding just yet. I went out to my first autox last month and had a lot of fun. I'll shamelessly admit I am a noob when it comes to high performance driving -- I recognize that while I may be a safe 'street' driver, I'm intelligent enough to realize that without actual racing experience and time on a track I'm not going to be very good :)

Anyone is welcome to take a ride with me in my Miata. It is the gray one with big, fat racing tires. :D

The big, fat front swaybar helps with that. :D

That should be interesting. I remember you improved quite a bit throughout the day last time I saw you.

Big Fat Front Sway Bar?
That must be why you are always 10 seconds faster than me.
Where did I put that parts catalogue?

Yeah I bet. For now I'm going to work on improving my driving skills on the courses, but I will be upgrading my stock sway bar in the future.

Yeah man autocross is a ton of fun. I've only been in one, but I had an Integra with Skunk 2 coilovers, KYB AGX's, and Yokohama AVS's.. It really dosn't matter too much if you're new as stated above, so just get out there and have a good time. Almost all the guys there are awesome and will let you ride with them, and if you have a unique(believe it or not) Honda as I did at the time, many of them will want rides too.

So what are you waiting for!
