yes

yes, they usually collect it at the gate.

Make sure that if you bring any friends that they get on the list.

They keep everyone that has ever entered on the list. I will be out of town, so I won't be there. I will remove myself from the list so there is no confusion. :)

BMWCCA puts on great events, though. I wish I could be there. :D

I've been about a half dozen times. There is a motorcycle school that uses a area right in the middle of the runway. That have the area painted so we can't have any turns in thier space. This makes for some long runs. We had a stright one time that must have been 1/8 mile long.:-o I must have been doing 90 mph at the end of it.It is longer that Z-hills but just as stinkin' HOT.

Hey every one.

Ok here is your chance to give me some input. For the last 2 events we have shortened the course to about .7 of a mile. In the past we were 1 to 1.2 miles. However at a mile or more we only can get in 6 runs. At .7 we can get in 8 runs. I have been told that the more runs is better, since its more time to fix/ adjust ones driving skills.

Thoughts??

Also I try to keep the course at 55 sec to a minute for the fastest runs. So yes there are cars getting into 3rd gear. This event will probably have some intense boxes to test braking , most likely 2 boxes on the course. I also want to do the curved slalom again since it was different and is as close as you can get to passing a car on the track with Cones.

Since I know there will be a cobra and some v 8 cars out this time I will open up the course a bit.

More runs = better.

Long straits = boring.

Technical challenge = Fun

I prefer the longer courses, but I would be happy either way. The thing I don't like are the tight finish sections that normally occur on PCA/BMW events. I think there are better ways to create a safe finish. I cringe everytime I hear someone try to stuff it into first gear to get through the finish section.

ive done it before...didnt work out to well for me. I no longer have that tranny. I like coarses wiht some technical challenge to them that has a few fast spots but doesnt allow those damn 88-91 civic si's to whip my ass.

jblaine
05-25-2006, 04:34 PM
55sec for fast runs is a good sized course. I'm all for any layout that gets me 7-8 runs at 45sec+ each.

Carrying speed properly into the start of a long straight and threshold braking at the end of it are just as technically challenging as diddling your wheel back and forth.

bam2002
05-25-2006, 05:33 PM
We run the box over by the dumpster on the way back. Not at the end, the Insurance companies have some pretty strict rules on speed exiting the course. Plus there is the fact that we cant have cars coming back fast towards the timing tent ( people).

Im planning on a figure 8 type turn around. So the end should be quick. Or the first 40% of the way back will be quick.

I really cant plan out a detail course, because I have to put cones in places where the cement is not falling apart. So its a bit Ad hoc.

if you got skills there's always the chance to get some speed. but yeah, those finishes after going 80mph to a super tight section is brutal, maybe keep the back section not as fast as the front or slow 'em down farther from the finish. i don't know, but i do know i plan on being at this event:D

Hi BAM, You do an excellent job setting up the courses, keep it up.
We all understand that there are a lot of limitations.
(Pot holes, dumpsters, timing equipment, and insurance).

ZENKIS14 DRIFTER - Stop worring about the Civics. When you are at Brooksville, the Honda that does the Ass Kicking is an S-2000.
(But there this is one civic that I'm afraid of.)

I know people like to go fast, but high speeds can be dangerous.
Didn't I see a Black EVO fly off the course recently. Way off the course.
He told me (as he was shoveling off the dirt) that he was coming up on 100 mph when he lost it.
If I want a long straight shot, I can go to a drag strip.

I really like the fast sections of the March and April events. What I don't like is lots of hard braking. My brakes overheated at the March event. I think it would be great to make the courses FAST on the way out, then medium to slow (and easier on the brakes) on the way back.

I know its not a big deal at PCA/BMW event cuz all others are in the same class. Its really SCCA where i need to beat them. The National Level STS Civics will run faster times than the slower SM Cars and most DSP cars. So that gives me a nice goal to work at

I liked the last course even though it was VERY anti-high torque. I couldn't do ANYTHING but idle through the first set of offset slaloms w/o going sideways.

It was designed to be short but ended up super long because of the technicalities of it, which is good. Would have been perfect if you could have shaved about 10 seconds off it, so we'd be running just under a minute on avg.

The April event was *SUPER* fast.. much more suited to high torque vehicles.. I was hitting a little over 110 on the longest straight if I held out braking until the VERY last second...

A little bit of a mix would be better.. maybe lengthen out the curved slalom and let us get a little bit more speed through there? Dunno.. certainly FAR from an expert.. but that was the one spot where I found myself having to slam on the brakes rather than actually going smoothly through.

Well I will admit that since I run a lower HP car and there are quite a few 4 cyl cars we do try to keep it below 80.. And the top speed limit has some leeway , due to the rules at the site.

Thanks for the complements on the past courses. I am always open for suggestions and feedback. This is one of the reasons I am posting on this site.

Usually a faster course does have some hard breaking areas due to need to turn around at the end of the runway.

I am going to do another curved slalom, this time it will be at the cross over area and run all the way across the course, from right side to left. ( looking from the starting gate ) Then the turn around with an exit gate and the driver gets to pick their line to get back to the left side of the track. So it will be a figure 8 type lay out

.

We usually do the off set slalom at the beginning to keep it slow and allow the driver to heat up the tires. That much turning is one of the best way to get the tires up to Temp.

The issues I have is I never know how many people are really going to show up. Once we get a pre paid registration going then I can better plan the track size. Since I will know how many people will be there Hence how many stations I can have out on the course. We just have to make sure there are enough people to work the course. Plus there have been problems with some drivers leaving after their 2nd run and then I am short workers for the last group.

Ill have to find some sort of Cad program so I can start posting the course before the day of the event.

One thing that I would like to see changed is the tech proceedure. I think that having to line up the cars for tech wastes a lot of time. I was a member of a club in South Florida (Equip Rapide) several years ago and we would use several tech guys which would GO TO THE CARS parked in the paddock area. They would walk around with clip boards, tire gages and t-wrenches and tech the car where it is parked. They can have a guy tech'd within minutes of him parking his car. It just saves the time it takes to line up, stand in the tech line and than go park again.

I'm going to be the event chairman at the Oct. PCA event and we're going to try this. Change is good.

Usually a faster course does have some hard breaking areas due to need to turn around at the end of the runway.

I have no problem with the braking before the turn around. The problem with some of the other courses, such as the March course, is on the way back. I redlined 3rd (65 mph) and braked hard, three times. Then I redline 4th (80 mph), braked hard, and downshift to 2nd. One or two hard braking zones are okay, IMO, but I had to brake hard 4 times on the way back. At that event, Bob (silver miata on hoosiers) didn't even take his last run because his brakes were overheating. I took my 5th run and overheated my brakes.

I'm not complaining, though! :P

We run the box over by the dumpster on the way back. Not at the end, the Insurance companies have some pretty strict rules on speed exiting the course. Plus there is the fact that we cant have cars coming back fast towards the timing tent ( people).

The easy way around this is to do what the CFR designers do and move the finish 200 ft up the course away from the tent. Sure, you give up 200 ft of course on the way back, but it sure as hell beats arm wrestling your car through a horrible short/wide offset like at Z-Hills... Gives the drivers plenty of room to shut it down, and keeps the finish fun.

It's so frustrating to work your way through a nice 2nd gear course then come to a STOP before the lights because the course designers want to put the finish right next to the T&S tent.

Ill also get the name part fixed. Im out of town till Wed , so it will be done after that.

It good to hear every one had fun, I was really looking forward to 4 more runs after lunch. YEP i needed to get my time down at least near Chi's. (G).

Guess Ill need to start watching the weather report before the event.

NOTE: the next event on the 23rd will be a BMW vs Porsche auto X. Only cars from these 2 manufacturers will be allowed to run. I cant guarantee any thing but I can pass the info along to both the clubs.
Sign up on My autoevents.com for this event once you have a car.

Thanks

Barry

NOTE: the next event on the 23rd will be a BMW vs Porsche auto X. Only cars from these 2 manufacturers will be allowed to run.
I assume you mean the 25th. June 23rd is a Friday and the 25th is listed on the PCA site as a PCA + BMW event.

Some videos from the Autocross.

This was my first autox/race event ever and I've never even had a remotely quick car in my life -- I am a noob who just needs training :D

Cool videos.

I have to say something though after wincing while watching you at the last event.

It seems nobody from the club has said anything, because you did the same thing at this event... and I was wincing again, waiting for someone to get creamed.

The timing lights at the end of the course are obvious. They're big boxes on the ground. When your front end crosses them, you should be off throttle and braking HARD to get your speed down to about 10mph. You FLY through the timing lights and are often still heavy into the throttle wayyyy past them.

Not trying to be your Dad or Mom, but it is the only thing at all that has stood out to me at the last 2 events as unsafe/scary out of everyone.

I can't believe I forgot, but I owe someone a big Thank You.

I was out picking up cones when the high winds started to come in, and someone moved my cooler and chair next to car so they would not get blown into the next county.
Those winds were really picking up out there. At one point I felt like I was in a Giant Sand Blaster. Well, thanks to the good Samaritan who saved my stuff from ending up in the land of OZ.

Good call on the exiting the course (Jblaine). Ill make sure I mention it during the next event. Since we had a good run off area its not a Huge risk. But your right, if some one were to blow out a tire or loose controle of the car at that point it be scary.

Perhaps angle the exit area so it faces off the runway (with plenty of space so you're not exiting 10 feet from the edge) so if a tire blows or someone loses control they're at least heading into the grass and not other cars or people... just a thought.

Wish I could have been there, but I did run at an autox in Baton Rouge and flogged a rented Rustang convertible instead!

Hi Muddy, I wondered where you were.

I love the rented Mustang Idea.
I looked on the Hertz website yesterday to see when the Hertz Mustang (325 hp) will be available.
TIA is one of the few places in the country that will have them.
I'm verry tempted to take one to Brooksville ..... Um, I mean for a leasurely Sunday Drive.
