First, define 'cheap ass car'. I don't think any of us want to be associated with a piece of crap, no matter how good the stereo system.
Second, who's going to insure it? I see you say a shop will own it, but you also say we all can drive it. I don't know any shop that would own and insure a car that 'everyone' can drive, even if 'everyone' paid for the insurance. Too big of a liability risk.
All that being said, some version of this might not be a bad idea. I like the idea of building a TR car, of some sort. My vote would be to build a DB monster, since its cheaper, and has more crowd apeal than an SQ car.
I kind of see it like this...someone comes up with a car, someone else (like me) donates the equipment. Anyone who wants to participate can help build it, and then we agree on where and when to show it. We slap TR and / or Tampa Forums on it (maybe they want to kick in some $$), as well as any other sponsors names, and everyone who works on it can 'sign' it somehow. Someone would have to own and insure it, and that person would have to decide if anyone else gets to drive it. We'd probably also want to come up with some sort of agreement / contract so that this person doesn't just turn and sell it. Perhaps (long shot) we could even some how form a large corporation of everyone who works on it, and have that corp own and insure it. Again, that's a real long shot, but something we could look into down the road. The other option would be to not register and insure it, and just tow it to shows. We'd just need a trailer.
I guess this could be a car that someone already owns, if they're willing to let us 'pimp' it...
This will require lots more thought, but I think it is a cool idea.

that would be a hoot - a TR Audio car. would put the rest of hte forum to shame with their constant bickering.
sounds awesome, Toby put it best with the specifics. The biggest problem would be actually buying the car ... a nice car, not just a 500 dollar hunk of shit.
wow i can see it now, stripping the ENTIRE... wait not even stripping, gutting-like-a-fish the interior, completely dynamating the whole thing, redoing all of the carpeting and interior custom and nice.
and going from there. Putting tweeters, woofers, small subwoofers and shit all over the place in ideal spots. =X
good stuff.
interesting to see if it'd ever happen

Nice gesture....but logistically this would be near impossible. First and foremost, everyone lives in different areas...it's hard enough to get people to come out once a month just for a meet. A demo vehicle for install classes which could be held at the monthly meet may be a more realistic idea.

So yeah, that rust and clearcoat peeling off is really ugly not to mention the quad dents in the door... so... I dunno, i might have to just swap the door panel out and get a new one and paint it or somehow figure out how to pound the dents out (which i dont think will work nearly as well as swapping it...)

Starburst-Aqua blue with a splash of pink exploding from the center, spraying outwards around the car?
Hell yeah.
I'd donate my sister's car since she never drives it, but you know, it's her car... And we kinda already paid 2k for it... and my grandma is paying the insurance.
Maybe if you guys all chip in for 1500, i'll eat the 500 dollar part, and the car is yours.
Motor works and everything, just the fuggin dash blows, speakers are all blown and sound like utter ass, it could use a slight paint job, it'd be a perfect test car. Got some pickup too.

A Bronco would be a perfect SPL car. Im not talking about a higher tuned car, Im talking about a walled off fartbox.
Ive never built a straight up SPL car before, but I know a ton of people who have. I could get some people to help design it if its neded. If we could get a car to burp a 156, that would be cool.
Or we could do a groundpounder. Mach 5 Audio has the MJ18s for $116 each. Im sure I could talk to Mark at SSA and get a better deal on like 8 of them. We could open up and take donations. We could get Toby to hold onto them for us (if he agreed), instead of one of the kids on this forum holding a couple grand in cash. That could be big trouble. Btw, Those 18s are 600rms.
We could try some kind of bandpass with 8 18s that would probably be real loud.
If 8 18s would cost too much, we could do 4 18s in a groundpounder. If I could get them for $400, we could get an Orion 2500D off Ebay for $425 shipped. Run that thing at 1 ohm, build a nice efficient bandpass wall, and we would be set. Get some wood for about $100, misc materials for another $50-60, wire for like $130 or so (I got someone who might be able to help out), and a couple cheap batteries for $200 or so.
So for about $1,300 or so in equipment we could have a car walled with 4 18s.
And if it means anything, Ill donate my old JVC HU.

why waste the money on mids/highs - if using pyle just pay one sub full range, you wont know the difference
Those PYLE comments got me lauging by myself--again... Anyway, as some know, I am a used car dealer also-IE: I can get just about any vehicle, any condition, and fairly cheap. Not sure I have ever heard of two shops working together but since Toby's shop and mine are at two different ends of planet Tampa basically, we don't really share any customer base as far as competition goes. That being said, I would probably be willing to donate a cheap-ish vehicle (probably with a million miles though), Toby donate equipment, TR members donate labor or whatever. Since it would be held under my dealer license, myself or any of my employees could drive it with my dealer plate, but insurance would only cover collision-and only for what the vehicle hits (dealer insurance is crazy expensive and covers less than your personal insurance). As far as ownership, I guess there would have to be a contract written up because basically it would be MCOR's vehicle, with Toby's equipment in it. Or, I could just get the vehicle really cheap and do the final transfer for whomever wanted to register and insure it? There are a few options. But I am game to help out-TR has been good to us over the years...

I'm serious about the PYLE crap... The people who buy pyple, cant install it.
I honestly wouldn't mind seeing how a show car setup would put up on the meter when installed by pros. Hell, the entire fucking car could probably be equipped for less than $600 in all pyle.
I'm talking about fiberglassed enclosures, angled subs, flushed amp racks, LCDs n shit the whole nine yards all in pyle(they make everything).

Instead of putting so much into making it "look" good...why not spend more time making it "sound" good. That would be the hard part. Main thing would be to fine tune an enclosure for the subs, upgrade the electrical system, custom kickpanels with enclosures for the mids, and one helluva sound processing unit. Do like 4 Pyle 12's, each with a Pyle 2000w amp on it. Maybe 2 sets of Pyle components up front, each with a Pyle 1000w amp on them. Fill the doors and floor with concrete. Might actually bang out a 130. :D :mullet:

150 with pyle is unrealistic. But I think 140s could be obtainable!
What kind of vehicle do you think would be a good platform to start with? Astro, Aerostar, Windstar, E150, etc? Or more along old SUV range (suburban, blazer, explorer, etc)?

If we can get an older Astro Cargo that would be perfect for an SPL car.
I say we go for the 4 MJ18s and an Orion 2500D. A cheap set of comps and just build a fartbox and have a SM3-4 car that will do mid 150s.
