looking for a head unit for my set up, wanted a 2-din dvd player but i put one in and it skipped like a bitch, and so does my buddies. Im thinking a double din cd mp3 kinda player, sumthing real nice. Single din will work too if they are nice. i want something that WILL NOT SKIP. i know its almost impossible to be full proof. but the only thing holding me back from turning my stuff up is my stock head unit. And it is doing BETTER than the headunits ive put in. I was looking at the nakamichi cd 700ii. But its a lol pricey for me, but i KNOW it will work. PLEASE HELP! suggestions of all kinds. i wana talk to sum1 in the 160+ decibals range, see what they got!

People in the 160db range dont have a traditional deck mounted in their car for db drag. What in gods name are you running that you compare yourself to 160db's? If its that big of a problem, get an Ipod directly connected.

SPL cars run remote decks outside the vehicle...number one because of the vibration, and number two because people usually cannot sit inside the vehicle.

A more expensive deck does not mean it's going to be less prone to skipping. If anything, I'd look into building a more secure dash kit and something like a sound dampened cabinet around it, you'll want to take ventilation into consideration as well though.

As I mentioned in the 'meet' post, I have seen 160db (on a termpro) cars run standard headunits, inside the vehicle. Its not common, as most go to podiums, but I've seen it. And I've seen plenty of 150+ cars run regular head units. Like TBSpyder says, I'd look at the install. Not saying you did a bad job, but some vehicles just require more work to get a solid mount for the head unit.

I was just saying 160db class just to see what they've got. Ive got a stock head unit now, and s doing beter than te head unt i put in. Im gogin tomorrow to purchse one and just see what it does. nice pioneer probably. it IS loud though. Im FAIRLY new into sound but i wanna get metered and hear some of other peoples stuff. Hope you don't have a single 4 gauge trying to run 2450w rms. That's definetly 0 gauge territory or at the least two 4 gaugers

The meet is may 13th...there are a couple other threads about it.

I've got 2 Crossfire XT215's on a Crossfire VR2000D in my Caprice. Three batteries, 25 farad cap, 250 amp alternator. It does about 147-148 on my Termpro...probably 152+ on an audiocontrol. There's another guy from the Orlando area, Bubba Webber, with 2 Memphis 15's on some big Memphis amp. Last I heard, he was doing 150+ on a termpro, but he has some pretty intense modifications to his car. So, I'm going to guess you'll be in the mid to upper 140's.

And just a tip...pencils bouncing off the roof is cool, but all that vibration is costing you DB. You want the most rigid vehicle shell you can get. I'd suggest some dynamat, or even some MDF glued to the roof, under the headliner. Same for the floors, doors, and anywhere else you can think of. If you intend to compete, though, you should check the rules. Some of these mods might move you to a higher class, where guys often fill things with cement, use Lexan for the windshield, bolt doors closed, etc.

wow,tj your a lil off in your own world.somehow i do not think i will ever see a car on TR with cement, which is illegal in db drag,by the way.and dynamat will make you lose dbs too by obsorbing the sound not allowing it to bounce off it.so i would suggest dynamat, then covered by fiberglass.if you dont know anyone who can do it,lmk.we a a db drag car club in the middle of a rebuild and love to do hands on work.

while you are right about dynamat absorbing sound - plz use punctuation, it took me 5 minutes to figure out what you said :D

If I only had a quarter for every time someone told me that.

somehow i do not think i will ever see a car on TR with cement, which is illegal in db drag,by the way.

I never said you would. My reference was to competition, and how one smal mod can bump you into a class you aren't competitive in. I did not know that cement was illegal in DBDrag (still can't find it in the rules), so thanks for the info. It is, I believe, legal in other competitions.

and dynamat will make you lose dbs too by obsorbing the sound not allowing it to bounce off it.so i would suggest dynamat, then covered by fiberglass. This is probably a good idea. I still believe that dynamat would be better than nothing, but covering it with glass couldn't hurt. I think its less about reflected sound, than it is about preventing flex, since its really pressure we are measuring, but that's a discussion for a different time.

if you dont know anyone who can do it,lmk.we a a db drag car club in the middle of a rebuild and love to do hands on work.

This is a great offer, and something you should take advantage of. As I've said in other posts, SPL competition is a science, and the competitors have it down. People who think that all it takes to compete is lots of speakers and amps are just plain wrong.

If you're club ever wants some meter time, let me know. I would really enjoy talking to you guys, and learning about how you do what you do.

I ran into some of you Area 51 guys on US19, near Moog, about a year ago. There were about 8 cars, from memory, and you were heading to a show somewhere. That's good stuff. I can remember back in my IASCA competition days, we'd caravan a bunch of cars to the show, turning the whole thing in to a big party. For some of the big shows, we'd go a day or two early, just to hang out with other competitors.

And best of luck with the new shop.

Area 51 guys a pretty good with there stuff. As for the headunits, my bud is running a mid grade pioneer while hitting 150's. Run an eclipse and brace it really good. Make sure your amps can take 5V or even 8V if you spring for that eclipse deck. If your amps can take it your ears will love it...trust me!
