The story begins on what was once my local forum, 0rland0forums ....

A user posted that he had a blown audiobahn 10" sub and whomever wanted it could pick it up for free. I am the kind of person who loves to play with electronics (dead or alive) so I jumped at the chance and got his address, all he asked for in return was a double cheeseburger, extra pickles. I drove over to his house and picked it up (he wanted to keep the classy wooden box) and he even included a shitty particle board truck wedge box with it! I brought it home and started looking at the seemingly perfect sub and decided to test it out by hooking it up to my home stereo. At this point I was expecting nothing but was thrilled to hear it playing music! I got excited and took it outside, hooked it up to my current amp and to my surprise it was hitting (though poorly in that pathetic box). I thought it was pretty cool but I already had two 12s in my car and didn't feel like changing it up.

Through talking with one of my co-workers he told me he made speaker boxes and would make me a box for the 10 for $20 bucks, I figured why not (I had been thinking about going to a smaller sub) and agreed. A week later he brought me the worst box I had ever seen. It was cut from 1" mdf and had different screws in each hole and was uncarpeted, at that time I kind of felt bad for the guy so I said whatever, as long as it works.I took it home and went to put the sub into this finely crafted engineering feat and to my shock it didn't fit! Oh my! I took the box back to work (along with the sub) and tell him it didn't fit, trim it according to the sub. A few days later I get the box
back and to my horror he added another layer of 1" mdf (LOL it looked awful) and he shoved the sub in and screwed it down (it still wouldn't sit flush because the lower ring was still too small) and some how managed to break off the audiobahn logo (though it is only cosmetic). At this point
I laughed and told him to give me my money back, so he gave me $15 dollars and we called it even. I spent an hour or so fiddling with the box in my apt to see if I could fit it in but it was a no go so I called it quits and threw it in the closet.

Several months later after moving to lakeland a friend got a hold of a boss 600w amp and asked me if I still had the sub, I said I had (it had been sitting in my garage for about a month and the chrome on the ring started to peel) and he could have the whole setup for $20 bucks. A week or so later he told me he got a free box for two 10s and just put the one in, and it
sounded much better than the previous frankenbox, I laughed and applauded his ghetto ingenuity. Over the next few weeks he had problems with
his amp shutting off when he turned up the volume (the sub is rated at 450w rms per coil and the amp claims 120w rms per channel)
and around the same time I was thinking about going to a smaller system so I sold him my 2x 12" kicker comp VRs and a band pass box for $100 bucks and a week later he sold me back the 10" sub for $10 (we burned the frankenbox a shortly after its replacement arrived, that was about the only thing it was good at).

Since then I hooked it up briefly in my car to make sure it still worked and after a few hits the box literally fell apart. I went ahead and threw the box away and decided to look into buying one or building one. After scouring the net over a week or two I got in touch with Toby and he offered to build me a basic 10" box, I accepted and that is where the story ends for now.

In the mean time I decided that the peeling chrome on the ring was unacceptable and started looking for a solution this $10.00 sub deserved. I removed the ring from the sub and took a wire wheel to it, which removed
most of the chrome coating but left the ring covered in pits and bare metal. I had a few ideas on what to do next but the fact that it is the $10 sub left me to only one solution, spraypaint.

Upon checking my paint shelf I found I had run my self down to three cans of spray paint. My collection consisted of a full can of simulated chrome paint, a nearly empty can of clear coat, and a half full can of krylon black paint.
It was a fierce battle but only one can could come out victorious, the honor went to the black paint. I used an old dog leash
to suspend the ring from a ceiling fan (turned off) on the back porch and gave it a few light coats.

I will be picking up the box at the audio meet saturday at Toby's shop and everyone will get a chance to hear the amazing $10 10"
sub (if it still works) and see it in all of its glory!

The sub and I are aiming to reach our personal goal of 50db.

Did you ever test the ohm load of the sub on a multimeter? I'm wondering why the amp kept shutting off when the volume was cranked and why the original owner would say it was blown.....

Nope I never got that far, everything seemingly worked and I was satisfied. In the worst case scenerio the amp has something wrong with it and I will have to replace it, which isnt a bad thing because I can find a new 10 that suits my amp better, but for now, the $10 sub is where its at!

I asked because the sub could be halfway fucked, showing the amp too low of an ohm load and causing it to shut off. The amp could be perfectly fine.
