Default What would you do??

My cars been down for a lil while. I get it running and driving. It runs like shit. I go buy a discount distributor slap in it. It runs for about 10 minutes and motor dies. After a few minutes of messing with it. Come to the conclusion the Distributor isnt turning. So i yank it out, and the gear is JUNK! It has about 3 half-ass teeth left on it. Meanwhile the rest of the gears are now in my motor. Turns out The man behind the counter tells me according to the part#. He sold me a CAST GEAR! Which when matched with STEEL cam gear, equals CAST teeth down in my motor. Not only is there metal in the oil. But as the car died i noticed HEAVY smoke coming from the breathers.... Which leads me to believe that more than likely. The teeth being loose in the engine, have probably destroyed my rings. ( car ran good, no smoke, no knock. previously) Just wasnt getting fire to all 8 cyls.

Now what would you do?

you can run cast and steel together, you just cant run bronze with steel. even if it did wear down your cam gear, it wouldnt do anything to your rings. especially if there is no shavings in your oil. the smoke was prolly from unused fuel in your cylinders.

if it was me, id rip the motor out and redo it.

Well there are no LARGE chunks in the oil pan. Its all fine shiney metal flake oil. And I was told by the Counter person at Discount. That you cant run a cast gear with a roller motor cam. The steel cam will eat the gear no matter what. Told the same thing by a couple different engine builders...
