I dont think you are supposed to used plywood, but the cut looks straight?

why a box for mids & highs?

It's ok when using mids....they really don't even need a box. So it's a good practice piece. Now when you start doing sub boxes, you want to make sure it's out of mdf, and air tight.

Instead of builing a box though, you should be taking the stock speakers out of the doors, building adapter plates with the plywood (if needed) and mounting the mids and highs there. Save the big bulky boxes for subwoofers.

It's good practice.. the cost of the wood was right so you can get familiar wth the tools/procedures. I know the first box I build out of mdf came out like asshole, and wasted about a sheet of mdf.

You need about .35 cuft of space per woofer. from the looks of those pics you need about half of what you have now.

did you double check your impedance wiring? even mids will burn an amp out is wired low. wiring too high will just clean up the sound a bit.

if you really want to get a little more bass from them, build an isolinear box - you should be able to double the effective output in the same space.

I'm building one wit mids but because it will dirty the phase I'm pretty sure anything over 1000hz wil sound really muddy.

I was just posting for a fun project - just reduce the depth of the box you have now and it will be clean.

looks good but if you are gonna fiberglass it start with a right angle wood and glass the speakers into it facing off the angle - it will give you cleaner more distinct curves and space value.

ok i know im sounding stupid but what do you mean?

Notladstyle
04-12-2006, 02:39 AM
Like two pieces and then use fiberglass to smooth the rest in curves. You could really make a hot piece out of your side project that would turn heads.

http://notladstyle.com/post/fgb.jpg

But before you fiberglass, cut the wood to conform with the curves of the speaker rings - the right angle will sit and the rest will be all curves.

home depot has 2' x 4' and 6 x 10 panels, I think they call them quick panels or handy panel. the 2x4 is about $6 - $8 the bigger one is like $20

for mids im pretty sure you could get away with particle board with little trouble. particle board is a lot cheaper.

I like promoting places I respect, i'd love to place one of his stickers (if he has any) on my car; though I never bought anything from there, I plan on getting maybe an in-dash PC or something from there when i save up enough and get out of this rediculous debt.

If you mean 3sq ft fiberglass mat you dont need that at all. Go to home depot and get a qt of just the resin because you will always find shit to use it for. With speakers that small and actually surface area thats even smaller, you dont need fiberglass mat at all. its probably flexing becuase it didnt soak all the way through the shirt. unless you can coat the backside you will prolly need 3+ layers to get it nice & firm. It should be hard to the touch and shoudlnt flex without serious muscle.

try taking a heat gun(hair dryer) to it for 15 minutes and see if it gets harder as well.

cant really tell from pics, need exact measurements and the motor specs for hte speakers. But a speaker that size putting out mids you wont see that big a difference based on the volume of the box. I ust didnt want you wasting space in your vehicle for nothing.

Use bondo (or something similar) after fiberglassing to smooth things out. It's much easier to sand than multple coats of resin.
