The new Asics sneakers I got are way too chunky to drive the Miata in any kind of coordinated manner, so I'm looking for something low and thin soled for autocrossing and for general bumming around... Anyone tried Piloti shoes?

I've had 2 pair of Pilotis. One pair still in service. I won't be buying another pair. IMO, "driving" shoes are overrated (and usually overpriced).

Yeah, I tried some Puma something-Cats and some Adidas Gazelles, and neither one fit my goofy feet. The guys at Champs in Brandon are getting tired of me, I think...

I have a $25 gift cert to Amazon, and they carry Piloti, so I thought maybe I'd give 'em a shot.

How do they run size-wise compared to other brands?

I have the low top puma classics. They work well as driving shoes. I just bought the new asics as well and they are no good for driving for sure. Piloti shoes are very expensive. I would suggest the adidas or the puma's driving shoes.

Shit... with as much room as you have around the pedals in that Subie, you could wear clown shoes and still have plenty of room....

No, the Gazelles look like an indoor soccer shoe... Adidas sizing doesn't agree with my feet. 11's are too small, and 11.5's are too big!

I saw the Goodyears but I couldn't bring myself to try them on, haha. I think I'd just feel goofy wearing them. Maybe if they were Kumho or Hoosier shoes. :)

I did. The soles are just too narrow. My foot hung over the edge.

Plus they looked kinda goofy. Big tall fat guy wearing these little pointy shoes, heh.

My buddy has them and loves them. they do look goofy and say Goodyear, but the Goodyear could always be taken off and replaced...hahaha

I've always driven best with bare feet. Can't stand wearing shoes when driving fast, I have no feel of the pedals and the sole always slips off the brake pedal when I heel-toe, and I having my foot stuck in a shoe keeps me from pivoting it easily to heel-toe.

Hmm, that's an interesting point. Is there some rule against autocrossing barefoot/ with sandals stashed under my seat, like I usually drive?

yes, everything loose inside the car must be removed so it doesn't get wedged under the gas/brake pedal.

Sorry. Here at JBall Racing, we have a strict "No Chucks" policy. :P

Maybe I'll try those Goodyears on when I return these other Adidas, heh.

I've been using Saucony Jazz's for the past 3 years. Most comfortable shoe I've ever had, sole isn't stiff, so there's good feel, and they're extremely light and breatheable, especially if you get the mesh ones.

Yes, shoes, and CLOSED TOED shoes must be worn while driving as a saftey measure.

I *HATE* driving barefoot.

sorry... I'll retract my statement and replace it with this:

I'll throw up a second thumbs up for the Chuck Taylor's. Maybe someone else reading this doesn't have a "no Chucks" policy.

The are super lightweight, with a thin straight-sided sole. Nothing to snag on a pedal edge.

I tried on those Adidas "Racer" shoes and they were just too narrow.

I ended up with a pair of Puma "The Suede"s in black.

Bah, I question the safety argument, while knowing that it doesn't matter since it's their ball, bat, field, and rules.

How much do the Chuck Taylor shoes typically run?

About 40 buck for your average Chuck.

Dig me, I'm a freakin' poet, and didn't know it.:)

Late reply: The Pilotis run pretty standard size-wise. I bought my usual size and they fit fine.

Also, I've been really curious about these (with some grinding down done to the bigger parts of the sole):

http://www.zappos.com/n/es/d/722063231/page/1.html

I saw a dude in a store yesterday with them on and asked him how he liked them. "The only thing I wear. 3rd pair. Best."

IMO, FL is way too hot to be tromping around in leather/suede shoes of any sort. It's either got to be vented HEAVILY, canvas, or sandals for me.
