Different things I did over the last year to my trunk...

oldest and most favorite setup. I plan to put everything back like this tomorrow.

My fav sub until diamonds

The weighted forward panel eliminated a great deal of trunk rattle.

Probably the only setup that stayed in put for more than 2 months. I gave up because the false wall was dampening the bass.

If only I had the patience to finish it. Another 3 hours and It would have been complete but simpsons was coming on and I had already spent most of the afternoon building so I ditched it.

My own 'lo-tech" car PC. A complete pentium266mhz with 256MB of ram and a 20gig hdd all hooked up to a 120v 200watts power supply. It killed my battery one too many times so I ditched it and bought a dvd player.

I cant remember what the hell I was up to here.

The forward facing would have worked better if the damn boxes were perfectly symetrical.

Very heavy.

Brings back some bad memories...I had an 88 blazer for about 2 years (88-90). In that time I had:

Bazooka tubes
2 pyle 12's sealed box
2 pyle 12's ported box
2 redline 12's ported box
4 pyle 12's sealed box
4 pyle 12's ported box
4 pyle 12's isobaric sealed
2 Gauss 18's ported box
2 Gauss 18's single reflex bandpass box
6 redline 12's sealed box
4 orion 10's in an isobaric, dual reflex, band pass

Probably others, but that's all I can remember right now. This doesn't even get in to the different amp / processor combinations, or the huge variety of mids and highs.

I wouldn't again, either. Remember this was 1989 ish...pyle was acutally a pretty hot brand back then...they were made in the USA, and had pretty solid design engineering behind them. This was back before they became another chinese made, distributor brand. I also had very limited funds, and there just weren't the brands (and the prices) we have today. Rockford was pretty much the cadillac, Kicker was just getting going, JL was just a house brand for The Speaker Warehouse, orion didn't make their own subs, and no one wanted to touch any of the japanese speakers.

Back in 89, if you had two punch 12's on a punch 150...a whopping 180 watts max, you were the man. From memory, the punch 150 was around $450 and the entry level punch 12's were about $125 each.

Class D didn't exist, and the only big amps were the HIFonics Colossus (a really, really, scary amp) and the big Orion 2250. I had orion sponsorship back then, and actually had SX2250 number 7. It did 1000 watts into 4 ohm mono, was about 3 feet long, and weighed about 65 lbs. Since it was class A/B, it sucked about 180 amps at full tilt, and ran hot as hell. It also retailed for close to $3k...my price, which was 35% below dealer sheet, was still like $1100.

So you can see why I have to chuckle when people tell me how expensive it is to have a good system these days.

Yeah, back then, no one really cared about anything but how big the magnet was. For amps, everything was based on how much it weighed. I can remember a couple brands that actually put lead bars inside to make them heavier.

Remember the big ass Pyle Bass by nines? For the rest of you, they had a 6x9 that had such a huge magnet, it barely fit through the mounting hole.

I remember that. I think that was just as pyle was going out. Funny part (now, anyway) was that there was a guy in the Oldsmar Flea Market who had 'pyle knockoffs'. Looked just like the real deal, but lacked the PYLE logo on the dustcap. These were a step up from his normal pyramid...you know, the one's with the clear cones, so you could see how off center the voice coil was.

Then he got a truckload, or seven, of real pyle. You could barely get within 20 feet of his booth, there was such a mob. Hell, he had 12", 40 oz magnet subs with paper cones and foam surrounds, good for about 150 watts max for only like $75 each!!

Worse...got gobbled up by Directed. They still put the Orion name on stuff, but I haven't heard good things about it.
