Not sure whether to try and repair it =/ Any suggestions? The coil is fine as well as the surround it just got too hot and broke away from the cone.

Whos selling a single 12 that will hit in a ported box? < $100

All the the work you have put into that ported enclosure you should know that not every sub will just drop in there and sound good.

what inductance (4ohm, 2 ohm)? How much power do you want to put to it?

I'm not there anymore....but yeah, we'd get JL at cost through accomodation.

I need dual 2ohm my amp is a Polk 300.2 manual puts it at 500wRMS into 4ohms bridged but my voltmeter has never seen high than 400 stable watts on a test tone. could be the crossover tho

Spyder - I doubt you can get any JL sub for < $100 and thats all a poor college student can afford. and even then my wife is gonna make me pay dearly.

looks hot... but my wife has told me to stop denying my ricer roots and buy alpine. I'm still in limbo because I like the free shipping.

Of course I meant impedance (I'd just come in from the paint booth...fumes, I guess). Couldn't it be single 4 ohm, as well? Let me see what I have at the shop later today.

I can't say I've ever seen that happen before, and I've cooked a couple of subs. Interesting...and at only 400w.

if you are at the shop right now send me a mssg cuz im comin through palm harbor in like an hour with no bass =(

* ive done it to evey sub ive ever owned - it happens when the sub exceeds the motor structures ability to extend - the coil keeps going while the spyder stops the cone and it breaks free. I've read that it can be repaired with resin and a lot of time.

I don't have anything that will work...sorry.

Well, actually, I have some Audiobahn AW1206T's...I didn't mention those, because I'm sure you already have an opinion about Audiobahn.

But, I'd be willing to loan you one until you find something permanent. Just return it whenever...

Just a thought...I wonder if the bass cancellation issue you were having was actually more due to the impending woofer failure...

We will see after I swap my d310 for a d312 =/ I accidentally built the box 1.5 insead of .75 and I dont feel like rebuilding it after all the work I put into it.

 Twice as much recommended air space? That thing is going to sound interesting....not to mention you're running a risk of trashing the sub. Throw a bunch of bricks or something in there.

Thats why im opting for the 12" tomorrow. I wanted to put bricks in but im afraid that they might slide inside hte box and scratch up the magnet and It has to be in perfect shape to swap it out.

Just by turning what around? The box in the trunk?

Well then keep it facing whatever direction sounds best. Problem solved.

I do onsite installs from a sedan, I need all of my trunk for tools. with the sub facing backwards I run the risk of punching a hole through it and a grill is just annoying and plus it just looks cool to open the passthrough and see a sub sittin there.

Here's another test. Face the box forward, sit inside with the doors closed, seats up, whatever, and have someone open the trunk while the music is playing. If it sounds better with the trunk open (inside the car) then it is most likely cancellation between the wave coming right off the front of the woofer and the wave that 'rattled' around back there before it met the other front wave. In this case, you'll need to seal the front of the box to the interior better.

If that doesn't help, it sounds like its not as much cancellation from facing forward as it is either coupling or loading from it facing backwards.

How about a loading board in front of the sub? You could try it out of regualr MDF, and if it works, go with acrylic, so you can still see the sub.

What keeps getting me is that you say the first box, with just dimensional differences, didn't have this problem...I don't get that.

More to investigate Saturday.

every sealed box I've faced forward has had the problem - every ported forward/ sub forward box hasnt. After I get my seats back in ill start attacking the project of coupling it to the passthrough so theres an airtight tunnel between the seat and the box. that will be for next month's meet.

Well something is gotta give.

Why dont you do a stealth install. Face the sub toward the trunk, but a board in front of it. Instead of a grille in the traditional sense, use some mesh from parts express, sturdy stuff, flush it in to the board and then find some carpet you can blow out a candle thru.
