i want nice and clear but also as much bass as possible from them. i want to go with a subless system for the talon to keep weight down. i will run them from a head unit for awhile but i do have a amp i can use if needed. thanks

I wouldn't buy speakers expecting any "bass." If you want any bump and are really concerned about weight, you may want to consider a good single 8" sub...box and sub should weigh only around 10lbs. And actually, what I would do in alot of higher end sports cars with not a whole lot of room (ie porsches) is do a fiberglass box on the passenger side foot well. Takes up about a little over 5" of leg room and sounds suprisingly good, not to mention it looks totally stock when it's complete.
As far as speakers, the Polk MOMO's are affordable and have decent midbass when amped. You're really not going to get a whole lot of depth from any speaker if you run it off the deck power though.

i understand that im not going to get huge amounts of bass from basic speakers just want the most i can get out of them. if i went with a sub i have a jl i can throw in there. just seeing what my options are.

We did one of these on a pair of 6 1/2's and a 2x50 amp. I'm not kidding...it sounded like we had a 10 in the car somewhere. Didn't have the impact of a sub, but sounded like there was one in the car.
I've got one of these in a sound board, hooked to a pair of 5 1/4's...you won't believe it until you hear it.

maxbass, is that the high wattage vibrator I read about?
I would stick to the 8" JL in a fiberglass box for weight. By keeping the stock speakers the difference in weight of the sub would be offset anyways.

Why would you be reading about a high wattage vibrator :-o
Seriously...you have to hear this thing, to believe it. Best part is, its not really producing any bass. It has a built in HPF at 70hz. It works on the phenomena of the missing fundemental. Long story short, every sound has a fundemental frequency, and then several harmonics. For example, a 40hz fundemental has harmonics at 80, 160, 320, etc. Like ripples on a pond.
What the maxbass does is look at the fundemental frequency, and creates amplified harmonics of said frequency. Your brain fills in the gaps. Sort of like 'ok, I know this speaker can't reproduce that 40hz tone, but if I create amplified harmonics at 80 and 160, this guy won't know the difference'.
This is much the same principle as headphones...they don't have nearly enough radiating area to produce bass...probably nothing below like 500hz. But when you listen to them, you don't really notice.
When I saw this thing at CES last year, I thought it would be a hoax. Once I heard it, I figured it would be huge, and expensive. Once I found out it was about 6 inches by 5 inches by 1 inch, and had an MSRP of $299, I bought some.
While its not the solution to subwoofers, it is great when you don't have the space, or don't want the weight and complexity of subs. Its also great to add front midbass stage when you only have room for small speakers up there.
Oh yeah...it also has a subwoofer setting, where instead of a HPF at 70, it uses a HPF at 35. So, it takes the lower frequencies, that use lots of power and excursion to reproduce, and creates higher harmonics. Again, you have to hear it, to believe it.
This thing is the real deal...not some new epicenter (actually, its the exact opposite of the epicenter). The guy who created it started out in professional and studio processors. His stuff is used all over the world.

We use crossfire, and there are really only two levels of speaker I use. The SX series and the SQ series. The SX is available in 5 1/4 and 6 1/2 coaxes, 5 and 6 inch seperates, and 6x9's. Price ranges from $60 to $115 a pair. These things sound great. I'd put the sx6.0 6 inch seperate set ($80 a pair) up against just about any seperate set, selling for up to $200. They are that good.
The step up from there is the SQ6. This is a neodynium 'convertible'...it can be used as a seperate, or the tweeter can be mounted in the woofer for use as a coax. They come with a really nice outboard crossover network, and sell for $175 a pair. My installer has 4 of these in his acura, on a 4x50 amp, and they are really nice. They are also light and shallow.
There is a step up from there, called the X6, but they get expensive ($275 a pair). I just put a set of these in my 95 GS300, and they do sound awsome though.
Come by the shop, if you'd like to hear any of these, and / or the maxbass.

Sounds interesting. If it's impressive as you say it is, I might have to consider it when I do a system in my Wrangler, being a sub probably will not be an option.

I would buy a set of moderate components(type Rs are like 145) and focus more on sealing the baffles behind the speaker if you really want the most bass out of them as possible. fiberglassing the inside of the door panel into an enclosure isnt that hard and is relatively quick since it doesnt need finishing.

If you want some bassy speakers then go with the new kevlar coned pioneers. They have the most bass of any 6x9 and 6 1/2 pair I have heard in awhile. Amp these with a decent small amp like a MTX 4 channel and then you have yourself I decent sounding system without a sub. If you really want a sub just throw in a small 8 or 10 like everyone is saying. For the sub I'd go with a CVR from Kicker. They have some nice punch to them for being small. Put it in a nice little vented box tuned to a good hertz and pow there ya go...a nice kickin system with minimal weight!

If you can live without front to rear fade, which most people can, you can save some money and go 2 channel amp.
Example. A 4x50 amp, to 4 4 ohm speakers will give you 50 watts to each. A 2x50 amp, that is stable into 2 ohms (and doubles power, which the better ones do), to two pairs of 4 ohm speakers, will give you the same 50 watts to each speaker.
When I design systems, I seldom use seperate front and rear amps. In fact, for sound quality systems, I don't even like rear speakers (unless its a 5.1 system). When you go to a concert, the band is in front of you, the sound comes from in front of you. The same should happen in the car.
For people that, for whatever reason, just need the volume the rear speakers add, I'll sometimes skip the tweeter (or cut it the leads to it, if its a coax)...this gives you the added volume, without pulling the soundstage to the rear of the car.
In any event, there is seldom any need for a 4 channel amp, just to seperate front from rear.

That Maxbass Works Well In A Rag Top, Where You Will Never Get Good Bass, Just Mount One Under Each Seat With A Good Set A Mids And Highs For A Front Stage And You Can Get A Surprising Good Sound System With The Top Down

You've got the maxbass confused with the old Aura bass shakers. The maxbass is a processor, not a transducer or speaker.

There used to be a local sports bar that had wooden bench seats, with bass shakers in them. Was kind of cool for football or boxing, but that was about it.
Someone also came up with some sort of gaming vest using them.
I saw one of the big wholesalers supposedly bought 'all remaining bass shakers' and was moving them for like $10 each. At least that should mean they will be gone soon.
