HAHAAHHA  Domestic drifting <= understeering and spinouts!

Unless someones got the skills of Raye Mullen (sp?), driver of yellow GTO, then that would be ok.
but remember, that car went through serious mods.

Speaking of eye opening, I support FWD drifting, and MADD (mothers against drunk drifting.)

Why a charger? i suppose DiamlerChrysler want to invest their interest in drifting, as GM is doing, because a few of their cars are RWD, so domestics can take a piece of the drift scene.

Domestics have dominated Formula D since the first year AND a domestic won at the Irwindal round of D1GP. I wouldn't be so suprised to see more and more domestics entering the scene.

DCX doesn't just want to market the new Charger to your parents, that remember the OLD chargers...they want to get attract the 'young enthusiast' crowd just as it did back in the days of the original charger...so they're putting it in a motorsport that the demographic is mainly just that, the young automotive enthusiast (or sac riders just waiting for the next trend).

I work quite a bit with DCX/SRT and I have to say the new SRT-8 line is damn impressive...they are all based on the Mercedes E and S class chassis and the factory suspension performs extremely well for big heavy sedans. The punch their Hemi's pack is also pretty fucking insane for a factory sedan/wagon. The only downside is none of them are available in a 6sp manual, only 5sp automatics (which actually shift pretty well, not the slow & sloppy like your average slushbox).

I'd like an SRT-8 Magnum as a daily driver...it's one hell of a ride.

I suppose its another reason why parents should not buy a charger if they have a teenager who interest themselves with drifting.

Do you think Chasers are light? Soarers? Skyline Sedans? Nope, they're not.

Weight can be overcome with the use of good suspension and producing enough power. Weight is no excuse. ;)

 Yes it is.
Why are corollas (ae86) and silvias are so popular drift cars?
#1) aftermarket drift support
#2) parts
#3) weight

Now i know someone here, such as Paulie, is going to come in here, and tell me how a moron i am.

but .. when you have factory sponsorship .. it makes a whole new world for a driver/team. and besides the 3 reasons you gave.. the #1 reason those cars are good dori cars is the relative price/availability of them compared to most everything else. i think i would rather have a 400hp 3400 lb car than a 200hp 2400 lb car its all about stability . shit happens wayy to fast in a corolla its hard to keep up.. but im learning

ImportLuv

factory sponsorship...i suppose anyone who drifts in a charger will be sponsored by DiamlerChrysler?
If so, hell, I'll do it too. Free car, tires, parts. :headbang:

Reliability depends how the owner takes care of it, but they can take the beating.
Relative pricing...There's a time when local auto parts stores stop selling parts for a particular car when it becomes too old.
Availability  sureee. They are listed on the endangered species now.
A Rolla with 200 hp is every drifter's dream. They come stock with only 110s hp. So 200 is doubling the power from stock. That's just enough power to pull it through any turns sideways. And for sure, that car doesnt weigh 2,400. It weighs more like 50 pounds, well actually its 2,200 lbs
The more weight is added on a car, the more serious suspension and beefier parts need to be.

Weight doesn't make a car hard to drift, it just changes its strongpoints. My wagon is 3000+ curbweight and keeps lots of momentum through turns, meaning that I can keep more speed at the exit than a lighter car with the same power.

As for why Dodge changed to the Charger: Chrysler can sell more Chargers than Vipers.

not to jump in on the debate like i know any (truely, im a fucking noob) but the only advantage the 240 and carolla have in weight category is their weight distribution is as close to 50/50 as it can get, well from what ive heard but cary on with your civilized discussion ;) and im glad that chevy makes the GTO... (yes i do know the Pontiac is a devision of GM which also owns Chevy, but im still bustin ur balls cause its not a chevy) on the topic of chevy drift cars though, Falken has a 69 camaro drift car :D

my point about factory support was.. your average drifter cant afford a 25k car or maybe they can but the extra 20k its going to take to make it a competitive race car is another story .. now parts stores dont stop SELLING anything.. its just becomes a non stocking item . go try to find ae86 parts at autozone.. you will be lucky if they have it at the warehouse and can get it tomorrow.. oh and you would be lucky if a stock gt-s had 110 hp to the wheels a corolla coupe is tippin scales at 2080lbs with out my fat ass in it .. dont get me wrong.. i love the car the whole 2 weeks i have driven it out of the 9 months ive owned it were enough to make me want to dump every cent i have into it .but when im done with this i will be looking for something a little heftier and safer feeling..and by no means am i going to sell my rolla.

You, Mark and I all saw that coming even before the Kappa platform was released. I don't doubt if the GM/Millen conversation went something like this:
GM: Alright Rhys, we want you to start driving a new car for Formula D
Rhys: But Iove got the GTO awl setup mates.
GM: We know, but we think that our new Torrent will be the most strategically successful platform for you

aphxero
03-11-2006, 04:48 PM
I think that lighter cars are nicer because they can do everything faster and don't need power.

American cars are heavy plain and simple.

And on the corolla thing. Mine was 2080lb without me and 110whp. I miss it every day. It was the greatest thing ever.

And as mike was saying something heavy like the dodge can have it's advantages too. Especially in tandem. Just think about it.

markzeronine
03-11-2006, 04:56 PM
i'd prefer a lighter car with less power on a small narrow track, but not on a big wide track... it will just run out of steam and not be able to keep up with the bigger car with more power, no matter how good of a jdm y0 driver you are.

and theyres light and heavy cars from all over the world. including the US and Japan.

Hey did you own that silver hatch with the 4spoke wheels? is it totalled now? i saw one by HCC in a lot full of wrecked cars and it looked really bad. I loved that car too.

Ya mark is RIght But..Remember the LIL Hachi that Could? lol It beat everything over here it also depend's on the Skill too that car would Just Catch everything in the corner's becuse it was light and N/A just Accel. right threw them corner's and big Car's would have to sloow down and the Hachi would pass em..But The Viper OWned everything it Ran into So idk..it's ALL about Skill sometime's not the car when it come's to Drifting, that Guy that Drove the Hatchi He could get in any car you point out and Still beat you ..all about skill..

For sure. In a competetion like that, it's all about SKILL first and formost. A couple of the other factors that come in are :
THE CAR,
The Set-up
Practice
and you bet your ass, some LUCK.

I never came here to FLAME imports(Half of the cars I've owned are imports), I am just trying to help the closed minded fucks, but it's probably a lost cause.

Yeh that silver hatch was mine. The guy I sold it to wrecked it. Its gone from that tow lot now. There's probably some puerto rican guy trying to rejet my itb for a 1.8 as we speak. I'd really hate to think about where all those badass parts are...

But yah. I think for american style layouts it probably easier to compete in a bigger car. I got a big car to see how I like the difference. This ahould be interesting since I have a small car background.
