I'm looking for some really vague ballpark figures here. What kind of power, on average, do you have to put out to break into the seven second range? In particular, I'm thinking of a car that weighs in around 2000 pounds, backhalved, big slicks (not sure on size... I'm not very familiar with cars this fast) and some sort of built auto (not sure if it's a glide, a th400, or what.)

i can tell you that it took about the same power to put a stock susp car into the mid 8s weighing 3100 lbs....

i dont see a backhalfed car getting down that low unless its like an old chevy 2 and even then ever thing would have to be fiberglass and lexan with an aluminum small block engine

It depends on the car. My friends backhalved Pinto weighs 2200 with him in it and its legal into the 9's. That's with stock body panels and the heavy ass turbo 2.3 in it. A toyota starlet or something similar can do that with ease. And if all else fails, an old VW bug will definitely get you there. Some of those cars weigh 1300 lbs.

800 rwhp should get a 2000lbs car into the 7.90's.. Of course that is if everything else is right with the world.

Thanks for the info. The car is an old first gen RX-7 w/V8. I don't know how much it weighs, but the things start out at 2300 pounds. Where it is after being totally stripped down on a full weight reduction diet, but then cage+ iron block V8+ backhalved= who knows. Very much like a car I'd like to build someday.

that short of a wheelbase with that much power, going to be a handfull...(depending on suspension type, backhalved would help)...
look at the guy that used to own the 240 with a SBC in it (Mark I believe), thing ran 9's on the bottle and ET Streets. Nice ride..

7 seconds 2000lb BACK HALF take out a lotta insurance , that's why they are going to double frame rails , the big boys say 7 second zone is a weee too much for a 1/2 car "shit load of money " YES lotta time for the correct combo YES test and tune every weekend YES family life gone YES break parts to learn YES miserable if only 8.03 YES help evrytime to the track YES ...get the hint here ?
i needed 1200hp to run 8.60 in a 3600lb car , had the motor but the combo was way off (never got a full pass without something going wrong ) if you can do it hat's off . i'm in the toliet !

This project I'm thinking of is a long term project I want to start as soon as I finish college. If it never runs sevens I wouldn't be surprised, but looking at this other car on another forum got me interested. You're right about the short wheelbase/big power thing- the thread I found it in was one with pics of the thing crashing . I'm interested in it as a gradual buildup- they have bolt-in SBC mounts for the cars, a carbed SBC swap is cake, start simple and build up over time. It's a low 2000 pound car, a mild sbc on a middling shot of nitrous would move the thing pretty well.

That car was an awesome car. I loved seeing that thing run. Half the runs the front was so high in the air off the line, it was a lot of fun to watch. Hauled ass when it wasn't hauling the front up in the air, too. Part of my motivation, finding another light RWD chassis to my liking. I like the 240Z, but they're all rusted out or 10,000 dollars and too nice to chop up.

well the heads i got for sale i was going to use in a n/a combo small stroke big bore chevy engine it was going to be like 360ci with 16-1 compression and a 1050 carb and the car i was going to put it in had to be 2950 and i was planning on running in the 8s n/a.the class rules said i had to use a 23 degree chevy head witch is old school if i where u i would do a 434 with sb2.2 heads.if built right it could make around 900hp n/a with 14.5-1 compression then toss in a 300 fogger system and u should be in the mid 7s and high 7s or low 8s n/a

have fun

SB2 stuff is sexy. There's a guy that posts on the v8 rx7 board-posts here too, actually- that has an SB2 setup in his car. Totally crazy setup.
