my cousin currently has a 305 in his 79 malibu. we are planning to build a 350 for it soon, but for now, he has to replace the cam cause it and the lifters are shot. he already has an edlebrock performer intake, 600cfm edlebrock carb with electric choke, hooker headers short tube headers with glasspacks right off the collectors, 2.25in i think, and we are putting in a edlebrock performer cam and lifter kit to match his intake since he needed a cam anyway. how much do you think this will make? i dont know the stock figures for a 305 or how much to expect with his mods. heads and bottom end are stock. though the heads are fresh as i rebuilt them, he had a bhg which is how he found out he lifters were exseccivly worn. we checked them when we pulled the intake and heads for the hg fix. thnx for the help, and yes, i know 305's arnt the greatest, but im just curious whay he should expect when we get the cam in this weekend.

also its got a th350 trans and i have no idea on the rear end. i know its an open diff but thats it. what would be a good rearend swap? a 10bolt? or a 12 bolt? would and what kind of car should we look in at the junkyard to find one to swap in? i figure he will want ~ a 3.5 rear gear when we get his new engine done an prolly gonna go with a truetrac lsd. i have one in my supra nad it works great.

since it's a 305 with an automatic, a 10 bolt is more than enough

well, we plan to build a 350 for it and plan for over 400hp atthe wheels all motor when done. but for now this 305 is enough for him nd likei told him, he needs to do other mods to the car before he goes for big power like suspension, rear end, possibly trans work, etc.. how much will a 10 bolt hold with aftermarket lsd? or will it need aftermarket r&p as well? also, would a 10 or 12 bolt from a truck bolt up under his car or would it need to be narrowed some? im new to domestics and havent gotten this far on my truck yet as im still trying to finish my 84 supra first.

it would be a 10 bolt under it.the 305 lets just say depending on cam and what not i would say less then 300hp.them engine cam stock with like 170hp

well, i listed all the mods.

thats the link to the cam specs. i know it wouldnt be alot of power, especially on stock compression. he wanted to buy new heads, but i told him to save his money and get new heads for the 350 he wants to build. no point in putting them on the 305 right now, he needs it running so he can get to and from work. i figure for the 350, we'll go forged rods and flat top pistons, 64c chamber camel hump heads with 2.02/1.6 backcut ss valves, better springs, screw in studs, pocket port job, etc... then keep the intake and cam setup he already has and move to a 750cfm carb, then later have him move to a rpm air gap and a matching cam and some 1.6:1 roller rockers. he said he wants 400 hp but we all know once you hit your goal you just raise it. lol

fuck i'm not happy unless i got 550hp.shit right now my l98 iroc is the lowest hp car i've ever owned.witch is for sale.my new goal is like 650hp on pump gas i could probley get 700hp if i put a vacum pump on the engine and did some other tricks.

just remember most mods will swap over to the 350 so don't worry about spending too much

you can find 10bolts with lsd all day, people with 4th gen fbodies practically give them away, $200 easy for a complete one

We used to buy most of the thrid gen cars from Sadisco and then Copart. The only conversions we did with 305's was the guys that didn't have the money for a 350. Most would just wait for a 5.7

well, he hasthe 305, and honestly, he doesnt need alot of power yet, also, all the stuff he did to the 305 can be put on a 350, so not a big deal. anyhow, we didnt finish, the idiot lost and threw out too much stuff. missing bolts for the waterpulp, fan, bolt that holds the oil pump in, bolts to hold the crank pulley to the balancer, threw out the fittings that thread into the fuel pump when he threw away the fuel pump, so his new fuel pump has no fittings, he lost the carb gasket, threw out the old plugs and forgot to buy new ones, etc.. he is a kid and knows absolutly nothing and it shows.

anyhow, i rebuilt the heads, installed them wit hthe arp bolts, removed the timing cover, old timing chain, cam, and lifters, put the new cam in, new double timing chain, cleaned the cover and put it back on and the balancer and tqed the bolt on, put the lifters in, rockers, push rods, intake on, got the dizzy lined up and installed properly, adjusted all the valves, destroyed the heater box since he wanted it out and already cracked it so now have a huge hole we need to cover with sheetmetal. i have the metal, just havent been back out there yet. also got the valve covers, headers, exhaust, etc.. on. tq converor bolts as well, and oh yeah, he lost the bolts that hold the trans to the engine, so got to buy them too. taking longer then it should but should run good when done. old cam had several lobes that were completely rounded off. pretty sick. oil pan has been scrubbed clean too so no more sludge.
