hey guys, this new kid got an sti a couple of weeks ago and his g/f recently bought him a bov. well, i was hangin with him tonight and he kept hearing this flutter noise. first off, the bov is not a name brand, but looks sweet. it sounds pretty nice, too. well, he asked me to take it for a test drive and when I was just getting on it slightly and then shifted, it would flutter rather than blow off. if I wanted it to blow off, I would have to be up in a higher boost level. The whole thing just seemed weird. what do you guys think??
Also, he use a bottle cap to plug up that hose and then clamped it to stay in place. do u think that might be the problem? Well, the car ran pretty good, so, im not to sure. just curious what you guys think.

well lets diagnose the flutter noise.. its called compressor surge. Basically when the throttle body closes, the compressed air in the charge pipe is not being vented (or recirculated) so it makes the compressor wheel on the turbo spin backwards. This is very bad and can cause damage to the turbo over time. I suggest that you suggest to your friend that he immediately replace the bov with the stock bpv.
Now the bottle cap/clamp idea. Very bad... what if the bottle cap found its way in the compressor? The clamp became loose, the bottle cap hits the compressor wheel, either the turbo breaks or the bottle cap somehow makes it to the throttle body.

Hey Matt its me josh with the talon. Randy told me you posted this on TR so i figured id come check the thread out. As Matt has said it drives fine, there seems to be no shaking whatsoever and it idles just fine. I warned him about getting a offbrand BOV as hed just have to replace it to get one that actualy works well.
He took me for a ride and it never blew off until the higher boost levels even with the intake thing not fluttering. Im not sure at all what it was but like matt said the car runs fine, there seems to be no problem so i was lost.
On a side note, you goin out to QSL tonight matt? Ill be there.

matt u heard my gfb last night duringthe exhaust fiasco......but yah i havnt had problems with it....it sounds tight too
The stock BPV is the best "BOV" that you can run on the STi. Don't waste your money on a BOV unless you need one (i.e. you are running lots of boost and your stock BPV won't hold). They make your car run worse (unless you get tuned for it.) If you want to hear the "cool" noise, simply hack your intake silencer. Again, a BOV on an STi will do nothing other than make some noise and make your car run rich between shifts. I'm surprised that nobody has said this yet. A classic example of "If it ain't broke, 'fix' it till it is."
