i would go for the srt-4..everything i heard about the cobalt is that there not really fast.if you want a fast car that can be made really fast then the srt-4 is what you want

cobalts are slower but I haven't heard any complaints besides that
srt4's seem to be riddled with problems from what I've seen

Lol, i know people who have both so your in luck....The srt-4 is quicker but by like .5 0-60...The cobalt IMO handles quicker in turns and just the overall feel for the car is much better. The cobalt SS Looks badass tho man, i was shocked when i saw it in person......Cobalt SS over the srt4 would be my choice. O, wouldnt you trust a chevy more than a dodge when you think bout it?

We got a Saturn Redline about a yr. ago. It's basically the same as a Cobalt. It has been a GREAT car so far. We were a little dissapointed with it's stock performance(15.0-15.3 in the 1/4). I changed the pulley to a 3"(stock is 3.25) and ran a best of 14.6@96. It has held up great so far, and I'm rough on it when I drive it.
The SRT4's are definitely faster, and have a much better aftermarket, but it's picking up for the RL/SS, and there aren't 10,543,000 of them around here.

Another thing that is making my decision difficult is the availabilty of after market parts when you do searches online not too many people are making parts for the cobalt, but everyone has parts for the srt4, I havent checked recently does anyone know of websites that have parts for the cobalt?

cobaltss.com has some good info and redlineforums.com also has lots of info on mods for these cars, including the guys that have a twincharged setup(yes, turbo AND supercharger :-o :D ) They are working to bring it to market soon. These are former employees of Psi-Fi, so they appear to know their stuff. The aftermarket is coming along :) .

If your interested in the aftermarket for the LSJ check out
http://www.revitupmotorsports.net/
http://www.intense-racing.com/
The intense kit is putting stock cobalts at 270 at the wheels with a smaller pulley, plugs, MAF-T, and a few other goodies, check out the sites:)
I had an SRT-4 on order pretty much until I went and looked at the cobalt SS, put it that way. Its not all about how fast you can go in a straight line to me, maybe to some. But everyone has skittles, but they are very mod-freindly...its a tough choice, all i can say is go look at them both.
Ive held my own Stock for Stock I was dead even with an 05 SRT-4 from a 40 up until 100 then he started to pull slowly;)
Good luck, and let us know what you choose.
