i am in the process of setting up the baddest single sub set up i can afford.lol.
i was wondering what everyone thought was the best 10-12 inch single sub you can buy without selling my car. i have a 4 door car with decent sized trunk? i just want something that will take my breath away when i want it too, but still have excellent sound quality. let me know what you gues think. and also which type of box would be my best bet?

go with a JL13W7 prolly one of the baddest subs out for a single sub system. the box would prolly take up most of your trunk also. a 1000.1 monoblock amp with a cap and your set... then you have the bragability of owning JL W7 and the power to back it up.

It all depends on your budget and what you consider "loud". The JL 13w7 would be an excellent choice, however it may be out of your price range considering it's $800, and you're going to need a true 1000w rms amp to push it...which will run you probably atleast another $500-$800. When running that kind of power, you're also going to have to seriously consider upgrading your alternator AND battery...especially if you're planning on running a second amp...so add another $4-500 on top of that. Don't waste your time or money on caps.
The w7 is also probably going to be the closest you get to "taking your breath away" AND having decent SQ. When you start dealing with bass that "takes your breath away" though, SQ is going to pretty much be non-existent. IMO, you should decide which is more important to you because it's going to be much easier to pick a sub and box design.
If you're not looking to spend close to $2k on your bass alone, you might want to consider the JL w6. It's a few hundred less, and requires half the power...which means less money for an amp. Not to mention you'll most likely be able to get away without upgrading your entire electrical system.
what john said
cant stress it enough, it all boils down to your budget. the louder you want the more $$ its gonna take. LIke john said, after you buy a 1k rms sub, you're gonna want a 1krms amp, then the wiring, and the batteries, and etc etc.
Sometimes its economically easier to go with 2 mid level subs than 1 rediclous sub.

well i had 2 aw1000's in a geo tracker with 2 batts and 4gauge power and ground with only 1000 watts going to them, and did vey well in the SPL. but im not sure if it would sound remotely close in a car with a trunk?

I ran a rockford fosgate 12inch in my crx and while it was loud as hell and clear after a while it became clear that it was too much for that car, long story short I ended up with a different system to put in it but I still went with the rockford fosgate. Their subs put out loud bass with a clean sound and when I researched it they were one of the subs that required the smallest enclosure. You can use a larger enclosure but what is reccommended is pretty small. For the 12 it was reccommended a 1.25 cube box. that's about a 15"x10"x15" , I don't think these are exact but they are close the box was just big enough for the 12 and the depth was small enough to fit in a crx with a rear upper strut bar and have several inches to spare. the 10" is reccommended at either 1 cube or .75 cube which is small enough to not crowd your trunk space.
This is the system I have up for sale, check out the stats on the web and look at prices that it's going for. $300 and it's yours.

That trunk is whats going to hold you back sound wise. An uninterrupted path is always the best.

i have never heard a fosgate system that was "clean"... loud, yes but never clean.
there are alot of subs, the w7 is probably the loudest, pretty much every manufacture has a top of teh line sub in that range, the mtx 9500, eclipse titanuim, infinity kappa perfect, ect.. (not saying any are better, just listing some other decent ones)

i have never heard a fosgate system that was "clean"... loud, yes but never clean.
it was just the sub that was a fosgate, so I don't know what their amps do, but for the sub it was great. I could put in something like Pussy by lords of acid ( the bass mix) and it could be heard coming down the street. Or I would put in something by brooks and dunn, kenny rogers, or CCR and it would be clean enough to be heard from just as far as the bass. Now of course the highs and mids were on different speakers but when the bass hit it was in the higher bass range and a bit punchier, not the low hum that R&B can sometimes give. the sub was run off an amp that was switched to low pass only and I played with the freq cutoff so that I could get the desired sound. I also made sure that the wiring was done right, thicker gauge and twisted pair, not only on the rca connection cables but also on the speaker wire itself. Also avoid running it near any power source, and I made sure my ground and power connections were as good as it could possibly be.
The components that make up the system do matter to an extent, but you can give a $10,000 setup to someone ( amps, headunit, crossovers, subs, components, etc.) and let them hook it up, then give someone else a $2,000 setup and the cheaper setup can be done sounding better than the 10k setup. now this is within reason, Don't put an $800 w7 up against some paper cone 6x9 it's just not going to handle it. but I can take a wal-mart sub enclosure and with about $20 in supplies make it sound like a custom fiberglass enclosure. without making it too long, we all know that enclosures that flex and don't seal properly are not going to give you the best sound ( this is assuming a sealed and not a ported setup) so you need a chaulk that will seal the particle board at the seams, but something that won't crack so it needs to be flexible, then you need to fill up any tiny gaps or small pathways inwhich air can escape through a defective section of particle board...so you spray the inside with a few cans of clear varnish. this also stiffens the wood. Then use a rubber seal between the sub and the box.
I didn't have the best system around, but plenty of car enthusiasts heard it and couldn't believe it when I showed them it was one 12" and some shitty xplode speakers. like I said it wasn't the best...hell I have heard better. but for the cost and for what it was It sounded like a higher end setup.

why not just buy a better box instead of modifying a shitty one? I am not saying that no fosgates can be clean, because honestly i havent heard every set up... but the ones i have heard.. are loud, and sometimes punchy.. but they sounded dirty as shit.
