Let me first start off by saying, I know as much about car audio as I do about rocket science, which isnt much. Here's my delima, I bought my STI from Carmax about a month ago and it did not come with speakers or a radio so I got one of their radios financed with the car, I went and picked out the best one that they had which was a Jenson, I will copy the specs off the box.

Jenson MP5610 200 watts peak:
Power output..............18 watts RMSx4 channels into 4-ohms@<1%THD+N
Signal to noise ratio.....70dBA below reference (Reference:1 watt, 4-ohms)
Dynamic power........... 72 watts@4-ohms all channels driven
Frequency response.....20Hz to 20kHz (-3dB) Auxilary input used as source reference
Reference supply voltage.........14.4VDC

I then went to Divine Sounds for my speakers, the guy asked me if I wanted to do an amp and subwoofer and I was like not really, I dont need anything suffisticated. I just wanted good speakers where the speakers are supposed to go and get some decent bass. They reccomended these.

Pioneer TS-D601P......6-1/2":
Max music power.......260w
Nominal power...........60w
Woofer.....................6-1/2"
Tweeter...................1-1/8" dome
Impedance................4ohms
Sensitivity................90dB/W (1m)
Frequency responce....27-32,000Hz
Gross weight ............2.80kg 6lb 30z

Dual layer kevlar brand fiber with rigilite IMPP/ Composite cone
Soft dome tweeter with rear camber
Wave guides with dispersion control
Passive crossover with high quality components

I dont know what all that shit means, all I know is that it sounds like shit IMO. It has NO bass, I literally have to have the bass at -1 on the radio so it doesnt rattle like shit. I had blown speakers in my Camaro that sounded better than what I have now. I go back to Divine Sounds and tell them whats up and they say I need a sub and amp. I told him my Mustang has no sub or amp and sounds great, hell my 15 year old Infiniti has the stock system with no amp or sub and sounds 100 times better than what I have. He says "well those are factory systems". I asked what kind of speakers do I need to buy to have decent bass and he says I need a sub and amp, and extra $400. My question is, do I need one? Cant I just buy some speakers that go into the stock space in my car with the radio I have and sound good, like my Q45 or my Mustang?????

No, your right. You shouldn't have to buy a whole Subwoofer package for some bass. Of course the shop is gonna tell you that, how do you think they make there money?

First off, Jensen, although they have been in the game for a while, is not the best choice to go with for a headunit, well, for anything. Cheap Parts=Cheap sound. The internal amp that is running your speakers, is not nearly enough for any bass response. Especially if you have aftermarket speakers. But if your staying with the head unit, you need to get an equilizer. This can make HUGE difference in sound, as long as you know how to tune it. You may just need an amp to power the speakers. If you don't want something that powerful, then you can just stick with a 4-channel amp. Although you could get more out of a bridgeable amp.

Look around TR. You'll be able to find something to suit your needs...

You dont need a sub for decent bass, you need to take your car to a pro shop and let them take a look at the mounting/deadener(if any)

You may get the bass you want by sealing/properly installing the speakers. If you speakers rattle at anything over -1 they definitely arent installed right.

Most audio illiterate people never care about the sub in the back. of course there is a big difference with one vs without, you might be happier and a lot lighter in the rear without one.

+1 on getting a better headunit. Take those speakers back and tell divine sounds to fuck off. Go down the street to Buzz Off and talk to Chris. He will work with you and get you exactly what you want with no bullshit. I HIGHLY recommend them.

I thought they were a pro shop? Who's a pro shop, Buzz Off? I would look around TR for stuff for sale but I have no idea what the hell I'm looking for.

Well Ive seen mixed results from divine. some say they rock, some say they work too fast. I dunno, I've never been there. I would go back and try to talk to the installers. If your system sounds like crapas bad as you say), and they did the speakers they should make it right for you. Your speakers are decent brand, I wouldnt return them just get them installed correctly (by correctly I mean with proper bezels/ sealed baffels if needed/ dynamat/ and an amp if needed).

those speaker do require a lot more power than they would get from the stock HU, maybe look into throwing a moderate 200w 4 channel in the back todrive them as well.

So should I keep the speakers and get a new head unit and see how it sounds, or keep what I have and get an amp, or just get a sub and amp, or just junk everything? Im confused.

You should still get a new Headunit. It just depends on how much sound you want to come from your speakers. I would recommend Alpine for you. They are fairly cheap for what you get. But you will still dig deeper than for what you paid for the Jensen. If you still don't like the sound, just get an amp to power the speakers.

P.S- Just my 2 cents... If you go check out another shop, don't let them know you don't have a clue! Just tell them what you need/want, no more, no less.
