So i start her up the other day, the 383, 1st time ever she runs very lopey, timeing was 35 with advance. ran fine, took it around the block, and the tranny was slipping so i shut it off and brought it home. So i go to start it today and the bitch wont start. she stays alive for a few seconds then backfires through the carb. i cant give it gas or it backfires, i played with the distrib, moving it around a little to get it to start, but it still backfires. i replaced the power valve in the carb, still does it. the fuel psi is at 7 psi, and the floats are fine. what could it be, the coil is getting spark. could the destributor be screwed up, etc?
all i wanna do is drive it!

Timing gear off a tooth? That is what I would verify first. Put a timing light on it and it will show if you are off..

Yeah, check the timing. If that's okay, try a different carb. I had that problem with my Holley 750, even with a new power valve. I put an Edelbrock 650 on, that I got on the cheap, and bam, car fired right up.

Hydraulic lifters? If so they could be pumped up too tight now after running it at speed and need to be readjusted. That would make it pop back through the intake.

check firing order ,1st pull #1 plug out ,put your finger in the hole, have someone tap key till your finger blows out of hole ,check balancer top dead center, pull cap off see if #1 faceing #1 plug ,if not pull dist up set it at # 1 check firing order, put # 1 plug wire on dist facing #1 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2,clock wise ,try to start car if it cranks slow turn dist clockwise alittle at a time,if it fired already you will be close.it could be the valves r to tight,r u running a hydralic or solid cam?or roller?

still sounds like valve lash or an ignition problem.

it was the pos carb, i cleaned the whole thing out and it started up fine, alot of h20 came outta the exhaust, but i imagine its from good compression and trying to start it a million times. good ole new 383!
