View Full Version : Help me choose a new auto-x car.
1. 1991 Nissan 240SX for GS
2. 1991 Maxda RX-7 for ES
3. 199x Toyota MR2 for ES
I would like to run this car in stock for a year or so and then mod it for higher classes and HPDE's. Right now I am leaning toward the 240, so I can mod it for DSP or STS and be able to carry 4 tires in the hatch.
My biggest question is can the 240 or RX-7 get any significant camber under stock allowances? I am guessing no.
Any other suggestions are welcome.
Thanks.

If you need the space, go with the 240. Otherwise, I'd pick the MR2.
Given that you're co-driving one, I'm surprised a Miata isn't on your list.
The Miata is not my favorite because I prefer a hardtop and more legroom. I can't heel toe a Miata in stock form.

get the mr2 & a trailer. if you're gonna get a 240 you should just keep the civic, it's a much better platform to build on.

A MR2 like mine will PISS YOU OFF on a real road course. You will get passed by EVERYTHING on the straights, and be faster than EVERYTHING everywhere else.
Just a word of caution :)
However, it's a fantastic daily driver, stock class autocross car. :)
If we actually have an event this weekend, you can take mine for a run...although it'll be on streets.

I have a 92 240 and I can *physically* get about 2.5 deg of neg camber in the front. I bought the car with an sr swap. At first I regretted buying the sr as it was a handful on the track. Now that I have the suspension dialed in and I am use to the power the car is much easier to drive, and is very quick on the track.
The 240 will probably be more expensive than a civic, but I wouldn't say the civic is a better platform at least for HPDE.

rock the 240 man...i autoX mine and it does awesome. Its not too tail happy or anything, only problem is the top end kinda sux ass with the ka, but a aluminum flywheel takes care of that for the most part. I also have a $2,000 + into my suspension.

I have $750 into my suspension....
wonder who's faster... :P
Also, for reference, flywheels do NOT give you "top end". Infact, they don't change the shape of your power curve whatsoever.

If you get a 240, if you get bored, you can always take up drifting :)
Id still take the 240 just for ease of working on and a nice aftermarket

jesse, any good engine swap options with the older MR2 that would allow movement to SM2. i think the toyota platform coupled with the mid engine setup would be fun for future mods. especially if you could turn it into a V6 monster like the green beast. i don't know much about older 240's, but they seem big in comparison to the MR2. perhaps not as nimble and light on its feet as the civic or MR2.

im not sayin it gave me top end, im saying it helped my top end. The Ka24de in the 240sx is a great low end motor, but the top end is real shaky and shit. you can literally watch the tach needle bounce and struggle. With the lighter flywheel it helped the engine rev easier, but all i know is it was a noticable difference.
you probably are faster, i dont care. All i was saying is my car isnt tail happy and that has a lot to do with it. The reason for all the money is cuz autoX wasnt my original path,i put Tein Flex coilovers on it and we all know those arent cheap....lol. Im not trying to tell him whats best, just sharing my experiences so he can get all the info he possibly can to base his descion off of.

Yeah, you can do either a turbo swap or put one of the V6s into the cars. Eli is actually about to put a V6 into his '91 MR2 within the next month or so.

I think you should get a kart. You could tow it behind the Civic. :-)
Probably cheaper and faster than most cars.
