The real fun was the Miata autox challenge... Your first two times count toward your point total, but you can drive it as many times as you want. Not a bad little 25 second course. Our own Tony Adams had the 7th fastest time of the day! I was only two tenths behind... And they had an automated camera that snapped your picture as you headed for the first turn. The photo shows up on ZoomZoomLive.com; just put in your registration number and your last name, and bingo. Kinda cool.
The Jinba Ittai thing was DUMB. You have 3 golf balls in a shallow little bowl on the hood, and you have to drive around this windey little course within a certain time without losing your balls... REALLY dumb. I know it's an old trick used to teach you to drive smoothly and all that, but it was just frustrating to me, heh.
The RX-8 School of Zoom was okay. Some dude talked about racing lines and crap for like 15 minutes, then you get two laps in an RX-8 with an instructor.
The other thing was a "matched-time" autox. It's a little 30-second course where you have to MATCH the target time. Ours was 32 seconds, so you get 50 points for matching it exactly, 25 points for being within 0.5 sec, 15 for being within 1 sec...
The static displays were neat too. They had the "Spec Racer" car there, and two really cool cutaways. One was a stripped down frame with the different types of materials color coded, and the other was a mockup of the suspension and drivetrain with no frame or anything. You can get a good view of the new multilink setup in the rear. Pretty neat. And they had a couple of complete cars there you could sit in and play with.
Oh, and water was free, and you got a ticket good for one soft pretzel. :-)

I really wish I had went
I don't think the times are accurate yet. Looks like it is only showing the picture and time of your last run, not your fastest. There will probably be more 24.x's if they correct it.

Yeah, the time under my photo wasn't my fasetst. I don't think that's accurate.
But I know Tony had other runs after his 25.1, and the 25.1 is the one that's showing up on the top 10 list.
I had a 25.1 also and I am not on the list, Palmblad's fastest run (.4 faster I think) is not on the list and some other guy said he had a 25.0 and he is not on the list. So either the list isn't done, or Mazda figured that your last run would be your fastest.
From Sunday looks like Alann G (Gross?) 24.962 sec and Wes H (Hetrick?) 25.155 sec did pretty well.

I know that Jeremy had a 25.135 to my 25.137, and I was pretty sure it was clean too. My first run was a 24.7xx but I had a cone, still good for 25 points even after the penalty. Christy ended up with more points at the end of the day. She kicked my ass at the silly golfball thing. She was within 1 second of the time and spilled no balls, giving her 25 points for that event. I got 5 points for participation, I may be fast at times but I was not smooth enough for that test at all. At the end of the day her 50 points beat my 40.

Yeah, all of the factory-sponsored drive events are that way. The only one I ever saw that made you wear a helmet was the Mercedes one. You didn't have to wear a helmet to do their little autox drive thing, but they made you wear a helmet to ride in their AMG car with their "pro driver" on a faster course. I think that was more for show than anything else.
Wait... I guess Rev-It-Up had you wear helmets, didn't it? Maybe Mazda decided it was more trouble than it was worth and talked their insurance company into (read: paid them more money) allowing them to run without them?

That's strange about the times... But I noticed they were using AxWare, so that may explain it. :-)
Speaking of that... Their timing/scoring setup was pretty sweet! Wireless barcode scanners inputting the participant numbers into AxWare... That would be cool. Just put a barcode on everyone's helmet and scan them as they come through grid. :-D
That's a great picture with Christy's hair blowing around, heh.

I was pretty happy about running a 25.4 until Palmblad ran a 24.8. I only ran once, I knew I wouldn't get more points than I already had and I didn't want to wait another hour to run again.

It was a lot of fun. It was the first auto-x style event I've ever done, and I'm definitely going to head out to some auto-x's now, because I had a heck of a good time. My first lap was a 27.5, my second was my best time at 26.5, then I blew it on my third understeering off the course and got a 28.000 and about 10 cone penalties. I blame the widely varying quality of the tires from car to car because I wasn't going any faster than I had on my 26.5 .
